Spring Point Ledge Light - South Portland, Maine
Close the Gap - Connecting South Portland to Scarborough on Maine's Eastern Trail
The Eastern Trail is a vital multi-use trail of state-wide significance in Maine. The trail extends 65 miles from South Portland to Kittery, and travels by scenic woods, tidal marshes, and classic Maine villages. Since its creation sixteen years ago, the trail has provided millions of people with a recreational and transportation resource that connects them to the beautiful Maine landscape.
Gap MapClick on image to see larger viewBut a key piece of trail is missing in Scarborough. A 1.6-mile “gap” interrupts off-road travel between South Portland and Saco. The construction of this critical trail segment, which includes two bridges will close this gap and provide 16 continuous off-road miles reaching from South Portland’s Bug Light to Downtown Saco. The cost to close this gap is $3.8 million dollars.

Portland Head Lighthouse, Maine Drone
The Portland Head Lighthouse is a large historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. This lighthouse was completed in 1791, making it the oldest in the state of Maine. The lighthouse sits on the head of the land at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, which is within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine.

It was around -12F to -14F at the water's edge on December 29th, 2017. It was dangerously cold but it didn't keep the photographers at home. I could not tolerate more than a couple minutes of filming and seriously question why anyone would walk the Spring Point Lighthouse breakwater in these temperatures on icy conditions. No photo is worth it.
The cloud bank behind Portland Headlight is even more dramatic than the sea smoke swirling in front of the fisherman's shack at Willard Beach. Music provided by Argofox:

Portland, Maine - Vlog 25
Last month we took a short road trip to Portland, Maine and got to eat lots of lobster!
Other than the tasty and fresh seafood, Maine’s coastline is filled with lighthouses. We saw the three closest to Portland, that of which being Portland Head Light (Maine’s first lighthouse!), Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse and Portland Breakwater Lighthouse (“Bug Light”). All were pretty breathtaking and fun to visit.
The city itself has quite a few attractions like the Portland Observatory (closed when we went), Portland Museum of Art, Victoria Mansion and a few other museums we weren’t able to go to.
Though the city is pretty small, it’s nice to just walk around and eat from the plethora of bakeries and seafood places. Seriously the food is great!
So if you’re looking to go to Portland, ME for the food, you have the right idea!

Rockland Breakwater Light
We took a walk out to the Rockland Breakwater Light from Jameson Point, and watched the passing boats to and from Rockland Harbor. It was a very windy day, approaching high tide, with water splashing up onto the breakwater. This was an open lighthouse day, the public could go inside the lighthouse and up to the beacon. Looking back from the breakwater is the Samoset Hotel and golf course.
