TOURING THE AMALFI COAST (POSITANO & SORRENTO)
In this Symphony of the Seas Cruise Vlog, we arrive in Naples, Italy! We booked our own private excursion, that picked us up at the cruise port, and took us in a private car to the Amalfi Coast. Our wonderful tour guide, Roberto, took us to the towns of Positano & Sorrento. He was extremely knowledgeable and provided a great service! He had us back at our cruise ship in time for our departure. We highly recommend Roberto at Touring Italy.

*Differences Between Regional and Long Distance Trains in Italy*
First off, there are two types of trains: One that goes long distances using the high speed rail, like going from Rome to Florence.
The other train is the regional trains. These go shorter distances like Milan to Como.
*How to Book a Regional Train in Italy*
Example train routes:
Milan to Como
Florence to Pisa
- The Regional trains don’t need to be bought in advance.
- Once you’re at the station there will be ticket machines to purchase the tickets.
- The prices are fixed so it isn’t cheaper if you buy in advance. There are no assigned seats so if you want a seat get on the train right when it arrives.
- Also don’t forget to validate your train ticket before hopping on. If you don’t do this, you’ll get fined!
The regional trains make it super easy to do little short one day trips to another city.
*How to Book a Long Distance Train in Italy*
The below is the cheapest and easiest method to book a long distance train from two cities such as Venice to Florence.
- All seats on these trains are reserved.
- I found that buying my ticket from Italiarail.com was the easiest to use. Some say it could be cheaper if you are buying two or more tickets. I’ve looked on other sites and it was the cheapest I could find at the time.
- The website charges a small service fee of 3.50 euros per transaction. HOWEVER, if you book it with Seat61.com, you can email them afterward to get the service fee refunded.
Here is a list some other sites you could compare prices with:
italiarail.com
loco2.com
trenitalia.com
If you are traveling with two people I suggest getting seats facing each other on the side.
* The Difference Between First and Second Class Seating*
Standard seating:
- Decent space to put luggage
- Cloth seats
- Comfortable
First Class seating:
- 25 euros more/person on avg.
- Leather seats
- A bit more leg room
- Free drink and snack
- Extra room for large luggage
Overall, I don’t think it’s worth the extra cost.
*Common Italian Train Station Names (Translated English to Italian)*
Rome: Stazione Terimini
Venice: Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia
Florence: Firenze Santa Maria Novella
Milan: Milano Centrale
For Rome the main station you should take is Station Termini because it is walking distance to all the sights. Roma Ostiense and Roma Triburtina stations are all on the outskirts of the city so you would have to take a local train or taxi into the city center.
Here are how long the train takes from one city to the next:
Rome to Florence 1 hour and 32 minutes
Venice to Florence takes 2 hours and 5 minutes
Florence to Milan takes 1 hour and 41 minutes

Cinque Terre Tour (Italy) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Cinque Terre Tour in Italy
Extending south to Tuscany, Italy’s mountainous western coast on the Gulf of Genoa is Liguria, a splendid area with paradisiacal cliffs, remote villages, bucket loads of sunshine and a region known as, Cinque Terre, that comprises five villages. Monterosso Al Mare is the first and largest of the five villages that comprise Cinque Terre, on the route south. It extends across two bays and two districts, separated by a rock. The modern district of Fegina has a long waterfront promenade, a well-kept sandy beach and a good range of accommodation. Vernazza is considered to be the most beautiful of the five villages mainly because of its location within a splendid bay. Corniglia has no direct access to the sea, but extends along a massive rocky plateau about a hundred metres above the sea. On the hilly outskirts is the San Pietro Church, built in 1334, with an elegant, decorated facade and a rose window of Carrara marble. The beauty of Manarola is not obvious at first glance. From the station, a narrow street leads down towards the village. Fishermen continue to earn their living here, and there are holiday apartments as well as several souvenir shops that satisfy the demands of the many tourists who visit. In Riomaggiore, a mighty ledge separates the station from the village and watchtowers still bear witness to its chequered past. According to legend, it was founded in the eigth century by Greeks who escaped to Italy from persecution by Byzantine Emperor, Leo The Third. Travelling by train from village to village is a relaxing way in which to enjoy the sights and provides exceptional views from the cliffs to the sea and villages. In just a few minutes it is possible to visit these colourful coastal villages that were formerly difficult to access from the outside world.

Luigi paone positano amalfi coast
Visit Sorrento and Amalfi Coast
In Sorrento there are many attractions: Marina Grande is an old fishing village where even Sofia Loren made many films, then also the alleys of the historic center to buy typical products of Sorrento such as Limoncello, a visit to the convent of San Francesco dated twelfth century, and perhaps the adjacent Villa Comunale. From Sorrento in half an hour we can reach the famous Amalfi coast, where there are forty miles of coast full of breathtaking landscapes and different villages to visit. The first town is Positano; a small village that was once only a fishing village, but currently a tourist destination especially for wealthy tourists, in fact and called the gem of the coast. Afterwards we will find Amalfi, the most famous town as an independent republic, and where we find the famous cathedral containing the remains of the apostle Sant Andrea. Then we will find Ravello, which is a beautiful medieval village located 800 feet above sea level and where you can visit the gardens in the famous villas of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. Returning to the coast we continue to follow the road verses east and we find other less famous villages but very characteristic and cute. The first is Minori. Here it is free to visit a Roman villa, taste the famous sweets of Sal de Riso, visit some factory of limoncello and so on. After we find Maiori, which is a bit similar to Minori and is recommended for those who love sunbathing on the beach. Following we will find one of the smallest villages of the coast, called Cetara, It is a small fishing village that has never been renovated and that is why it is one of the most fascinating. While the last one is Vietri sul Mare, also very ancient and very famous for working with ceramics.
visit Sorrento and amalfi Coast with us, we organize private day tours and we can customize its with your preferences.
