TAHOE WITH TODDLERS: Sledding in a blizzard, and a stay at Marriott Timber Lodge | WEEK NINETEEN
Tahoe was the trip that almost never was. We knew we had a box of snow clothes from when we lived up in Oregon. When the time came to book the trip, the snow clothes were nowhere to be found. We checked the rafters in the garage, all over the house, and even my childhood closet. In a last-ditch effort, we checked Grandma and Grandpa Rogers’ shed, where we stored some of our stuff for about a month. Sure enough, there it was. Tahoe was on.
We stayed at the Marriott Timber Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. It has a fun location near lots of shops and the Heavenly Gondola. Our first morning there we woke up to falling snow. It was actually Faith's birthday which was a fun little surprise for her. We took the kids to go out sledding which took a good hour to get them all dressed and ready. The snow started coming down hard and the girls just couldn't hack it. Nehemiah had a great time though. We decided to head to the kids club, they call it the Cub Den. They had some fun activities going on where we could defrost a little before heading back out for some more snow play.
After building some unsuccessful snowmen, making snow angels, and a snowball fight, we went out to dinner at Base Camp Pizza Co. The food was great and they gave Faith an awesome dessert for her birthday. She was shy, as usual, but even hiding behind her dad while they sang for her, she still said that it was the “best day ever.”
It was time to check out, but we were not done with Tahoe. We drove all around to get a nice view of the lake and find a place to play, but we had lots of trouble. We ended up choosing a Wells Fargo parking lot for our last adventure. The kids could have cared less. Tahoe was a blast and we can't wait to head back there again when the kids get a little older. We are all so glad we were able to take the kids to the snow for the first time in a long time.

LAKE Tahoe 2020 Part-1 | Things To Do In South Lake Tahoe | FIT TRAVELLER | Daily Vlogs | California
Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, straddling the border of California and Nevada. It’s known for its beaches and ski resorts. On the southwest shore, Emerald Bay State Park contains the 1929 Nordic-style mansion Vikingsholm. Along the lake’s northeast side, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park includes Sand Harbor Beach and Spooner Lake, a gateway to the long-distance Tahoe Rim Trail.
Lake Tahoe is a major tourist attraction in both Nevada and California. It is home to winter sports, summer outdoor recreation, and scenery enjoyed throughout the year. Snow and ski resorts are a significant part of the area's economy and reputation.
Sand Harbor is one of the top 10 beaches in the Tahoe area and is one of the best places to go swimming. The water is shallow toward the beaches and gradually gets deeper, so it's great for smaller children. There are piles of granite boulders along the corners of the beaches where you can practice some cool jumps.
Hitchhiking is quite common around Tahoe and generally safe. ... Bears are common around Lake Tahoe, and though rarely dangerous they can be a nuisance.
Lake Tahoe gets an average of 250 to 300 sunny days a year. Humidity is very low, especially in summer. Water temperatures range from 32-degrees in winter to 68-degrees in the summer.

Nevada’s Heavenly Mountain Resort & Carson Valley: My Top Things To Do (2019)
Standing at the top of the mountain at Ski Heavenly Mountain Resort, looking down into the sparkling blue water of Lake Tahoe, I can feel the energy of this place flowing through my body. The jagged mountain meets lake views and juxtaposition of colors — white and blue and green and grey — are nothing short of remarkable. But it is more than just the scenery that is energizing here, there is a buzz to this entire part of the Lake Tahoe region, known as South Lake, that straddles the California and Nevada border.
The resort also hosts a varied mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain on 4,800 acres and nearly 100 runs, which means you can ride all day without getting bored.
Another reason to ski here is to take advantage of the ski and ride school. Instructors will help you with technique, talk mountain trivia and show you the best of the 4,800 acres of terrain.
When you’re done skiing, head into town. I love The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe, right on the Nevada/California border, not only for their apres ski happy hour, but also for sleeping. The property features stunning Lake Tahoe views, including from its Great Room with its 42-foot-tall glass wall, as well as a blend-into-the-environment design. Everything from the rock to the wood to the limestone walls is authentic, and a lot of attention to detail has gone into the decor.
The family friendly property has 154 rooms and suites and unobstructed lake views with nothing between the lodge and the deep blue water. It also offers a number of dining options, from the Bistro at Edgewood Tahoe where I’m partaking in happy hour, to the impressive fine-dining Edgewood Restaurant.
Beyond Heavenly, there is so much more to do in this region. The adjacent Carson Valley is just a 20 minute drive south from the slopes and is well worth exploring, as each of the four communities that make up the area come with their own historic aspects and recreational opportunities from hiking to horseback riding to hot springs. The area is also home to Dangberg Historic Ranch. The historic park was once a working ranch owned by the Dangberg Land and Livestock Company who worked the land from 1857 to the 1980s when the last family member passed away and the property became a county owned public park. Today Dangberg Historic Ranch hosts more than 40,000 artifacts in the main house museum that once belonged to the Dangbergs.
Other Carson Valley must-sees include the towns of Minden, Gardnerville and Genoa. Genoa is my favorite. The town is on the National Register of Historic Places with a Wild West style main street and is home to a charming old fashioned hotel, a hot springs resort and Nevada’s oldest bar, The Genoa Bar, which I find to be the perfect spot to chat with locals and wrap up my time exploring South Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley in the gorgeous state of Nevada.

Arizona: Len Necefer on Skiing, Land and Culture
Diné backcountry skier Len Necefer talks about what skiing means for him, cultural/personal connections and his home state of Arizona (home of the Navajo Nation). Arizona's highest peak (Dookʼoʼoosłííd) (aka Humphrey's Peak) is one of several sacred peaks of the Southwest. The peak has abundant snowfall most years and allows for backcountry ski travel through the Nuva’tuk-iya-ovi (aka San Francisco Peaks).
Backcountry Profiles is a series that highlights skiers from each snowy state in the nation. Some have forged many new descents and are a part of local ski history, and others like Len are significant influencers connected to local mountains. Len founded Natives Outdoors which speaks to indigenous people about ways to reconnect with the outdoors through modern activities like climbing, skiing and hiking. They also work on land policy/management issues with many non-profits.

My Mountain: Kirkwood
Former ski racer Jim Reilly knows exactly when the snow is coming at Kirkwood Mountain, just south of Lake Tahoe. The Monterey, California resident can watch a storm blow in over his house and spit inches of rain on the coast—which usually means feet of snow at Kirkwood. Family in tow, that’s when Reilly makes his way to Kirkwood to enjoy the powdery pitches and laid-back vibe that have earned the resort its identity as a true skier’s mountain. As a skier, Reilly loves the rugged terrain of Kirkwood; as a family man who’s been skiing Kirkwood for 20 years, he loves the tradition of spending time with his kids on the slopes. Kirkwood is a home away from home for Jim Reilly and his family. What’s your mountain?

Skiing Tahoe 20ft Storm & Sacramento Flooding by Drone // DJI Mavic Pro, DJI Osmo 4K
Over 20 feet of snow fell in the Sierras between Jan 8th and Jan 23rd 2017, meanwhile Sacramento had over 10 inches of rain in that period.
This is my most ambitious ski video yet, contrasting rain and snow, flood and ice, being stuck in the rain and skiing glorious powder. The drone and I even got wet for a clip, as I experimented for the first time with pre-recorded flight paths.
I wanted to capture the longing to be in the mountains when it’s raining here in the bay, the intensity of powder skiing on a perfect day, and the contrast between the flooded plains near Sacramento and the perfect white landscapes created by a record breaking series of storms in the Sierras this month.
If you watch, try to do so from start to finish with sound on for best effect. I had a lot of fun making this, hope you enjoy it too!

The un-opened, Big Open - Great Divide Ski Area
I've had a weird year...I left my home state for California...& promptly returned to carve my own path in the Rocky Mountains. Now, I live at home, in my childhood home. So I search for my own penis-showing game and days-like-these on your home mountain can help kind of re-juvenate the soul. The Un-opened, Big Open..My first clear day out there all season and only had to share with a few shredders. So good. So good I forgot to turn on the ProGO most of dang day ;)
