The President's House in Philadelphia - Part 1: Remains of Walls
Part of a series chronicling the 2007 excavation of the President's House on Market Street in Philadelphia. From 1790 to 1800, this house served as the White House for American presidents George Washington and John Adams, and was the site of the signing of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 and the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798. Critical to the history of the site is the story of the enslaved persons who were held on the property during George Washington's tenancy, and their living quarters' proximity to what is now the Liberty Bell Center.

USA: PHILADELPHIA: 3 DAY SUMMIT FOR AMERICA'S FUTURE
English/Nat
President Clinton has been out on the streets - cleaning them in fact.
Joined by former Presidents Bush and Carter and their wives, and retired General Colin Powell, Clinton's clean up act is part of the three-day Summit for America's Future.
Devised to find new ways of improving children's lives, the project did away with politics, concentrating instead on improving conditions for the city's children.
Splashing messy globs of paint on graffiti-scarred walls, President Clinton was joined by two former presidents Sunday to help polish the gritty streets of Philadelphia.
The group promised to redefine the meaning of citizenship with their non-partisan summit on volunteering.
A crowd of five thousand enthusiastically embraced the President's call to go to work.
Philadelphia served as a poetic reminder that all is not well in the inner cities of America.
The focus of Sunday's clean-up was on a stretch of road that connected wealthy families with those with in poverty.
The later area filled with those in despair at the prospect of little to no help in dealing with crime and vandalism.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
And we're here because we don't have to put up with it. And we believe that together we can change it. Isn't that right!
SUPER CAPTION: President Bill Clinton
With that, the three-day Summit for America's Future - a feel-good frenzy of community service - was under way.
Former Presidents George Bush and Jimmy Carter joined Clinton on clean-up duty along an 8½-mile stretch of Philadelphia's Germantown Avenue.
Retired Army General Colin Powell gathered up garbage. Clinton, Bush and Carter helped cover grimy walls with a palette of colour.
Philadelphia served as a poetic reminder that all is not well in the inner cities of America.
On this day of pomp and presidents, political tensions appeared
washed away.
On the streets of Philadelphia, dignitaries and regular folk stood shoulder-to-shoulder to put a sheen on a neighbourhood marred by razor wire and bullet holes.
You couldn't tell that Powell and Vice President Al Gore might be Presidential rivals in 2000.
Powell, the co-sponsor of the summit worked along side everyone else to paint over a building covered in graffiti.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Young people are in need, I was able to do something about it with my experience in the military and my willingness to devote a good part of my life to this. I don't think we have a greater need and I don't think we have a greater enemy than the that are now attacking our children. The cancers that are attacking our children: drugs, crime, violence. But, even more serious than those and a consequence of those is a loss of faith and a loss of belief of what this country is all about. We must turn that around.
SUPER CAPTION: Colin Powell, Former Joint Chiefs of Staff
Organisers have prepared a program to improve the lives of at least 2-(m) million of America's poor children by the end of 2000.
The goal - each child will have a stable relationship with at least one adult, a safe place to work or play, healthy food, marketable skills and a community service they can perform.
The summit, a brainchild of a former state Govoner, drew delegations from 150 communities in 50 states, government dignitaries, corporate leaders and community activists.
Saying the federal government should lead by example, Clinton pledged to seek legislation to delay interest payments on student loans for people who do community work.
More than 200 companies pledged millions of dollars in volunteer hours to their communities, along with goods, from playgrounds to health care.

Haunted Philadelphia
Haunted Philadelphia
Don't let the tourism PR fool you, this is not the city of brotherly love. The natives will not hesitate to take advantage of a visitor. Sure, it is relatively safe to walk around the tourist areas during the day in small, well-armed groups. But everywhere else is Nightmare on Elm street, on every street.
The amount of bodies that have piled up under Philadelphia's history of war and death has made it one of the most haunted cities. I did not capture any evidence on camera this time, but there were several occasions when I felt a strong presence and had to stop filming.
Chad's Philly Favorites - Elfreth's Alley
Hi everybody Chad Rosenberg from Rosenberg & Parker here with another episode of Chad’s Philly Favorites and this one is an absolute must do. I'm in Elfreth’s Alley in Old City right off of 2nd Street. And Elfreth’s Alley is the oldest continuously occupied street in the entire country. People been living here since with 1720’s and they still live here to this day. One of the things that is also really cool about the street for risk management people is that these buildings have these emblems on them called fire marks And the one up here actually says fire association and fire association later became Reliant Insurance Company and is now part of Travelers. And if you had one of those emblems on your building, on your house and you had a fire then the fire company would come and put out your fire. If you had a fire and you didn't have that they let your house burned to the ground. Noww this is something started by Benjamin Franklin and is the origins of property insurance the United States. When you're in Philadelphia for RIMS you've got to come check out after Sally Elfreth’s Alley! We’ll see you in April!
