Secret Service plans to put a stop to White House fence jumping with a 14-foot barrier - TomoNews
WASHINGTON — White House security plans proposed by the Secret Service include a 14-foot barrier nearly twice the height of the current fence.
The iron pickets on the planned fence are expected to be thicker, twice as high as those on the current fence, and spaced closer together.
Sensors would be fitted to the back of the pickets’ sharp finials at 30-foot intervals, according to the plan proposed last month and published on the National Park Service website. The Secret Service also told planning commissions that the new fence would include anti-climb and anti-blast features.
In light of the recent stream of “jumpers” that have attempted to break into the compound at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the Secret Service hopes this fence will keep intruders out. Fence jumping at the White House has become a regular occurrence, with two people climbing over the barrier last month and one jumper the day after Thanksgiving last year, according to the New York Times.
However, critics of the new fence believe a balance must be struck between security, historical preservation and the spirit of democracy. The Secret Service must now seek approval from two federal boards for its plan, the New York Times reported.
The plan will be reviewed this summer and planners expect construction of the fence to begin in 2018, according to the Washington Post.

Phil Tagami's SF Bay Cruise And Port Of Oakland Talk
#Zennie62 Phil Tagami's SF Bay Cruise And Port Of Oakland Talk
I finally got the chance to edit, compress, and upload this boat ride I took with my friend Phil Tagami on August 31st of this year 2008. Phil's a real estate developer who redeveloped the Rotunda and The Fox Theater and is managing partner of California Commercial Investments / California Capital Investment Group. He also has his own video show here called Tagami Vision.
He successfully redeveloped the Oakland Rotunda, in downtown Oakland, CA, and is now working on the recreation of the Oakland Fox Theater. Listen to this video because Phil gives a great view of the economic state of development not just in Oakland, but in the United States.
Also, keep in mind this video was before the election and just after John Edwards annouced that he had been in an affair. Tagami supported Edwards, but later and through the election threw his support to now President-Elect Barack Obama. - vlog produced by Zennie Abraham Zennie62 Blog - youtube video

These ancient American relics remain unexplained.
A centuries-old stone wall, stretching for miles; enormous pictures scratched into the ground of a desert; rocks arranged in a circle. You know what these landmarks are, right?
Guess again. Instead of the Great Wall of China or Stonehenge, these are all ancient American ruins and landmarks. The United States is a relative newcomer to the world stage, but there have been people long living on this continent, and they’ve left traces of their presence just as mysterious as those found in other countries.

Why Are 96,000,000 Black Balls on This Reservoir?
I took a boat through 96 million black plastic balls on the Los Angeles reservoir to find out why they're there. The first time I heard about shade balls the claim was they reduce evaporation. But it turns out this isn't the reason they were introduced.
Huge thanks to LADWP for arranging this special tour for me. Next time let's put the GoPro on the submersible!
The balls are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) which is less dense than water so they float on the surface of the reservoir even if they break apart. They are 10cm (4 inches) in diameter and contain about 210ml of water. So the main reason they are on the reservoir is to block sunlight from entering the water and triggering a chemical reaction that turns harmless bromide into carcinogenic bromate. This effect occurs with prolonged exposure to bromate so regulators insist that levels be kept below 10 microgram per liter on average over a 12 month period.

Symposium: The U.S. Immigration Regime and the Politics of Belonging
On April 7, 2017, CSREA presented a symposium entitled, The U.S. Immigration Regime and the Politics of Belonging. How have immigration laws developed over the past century and how do these policies continue to affect the country today? For example, what are the legacies of IRCA and IRRIRA and how are these policies being amended and applied today?
Further, and in light of the Trump administration’s current positions on immigration, recent executive orders as well as public demonstrations and protests, what will define the future of immigration in the U.S.? This symposium featured a keynote lecture followed by a panel of speakers and a discussion among speakers and the audience. Together, the speaker and panelists offered a rich, informed and interdisciplinary take on the past, present and possible futures of the U.S. immigration regime, race, ethnicity and the politics of belonging.
Keynote:
0:14:40 – Bill Ong Hing, Professor, Director of the Immigration and Deportation Defense Clinic, and Dean's Circle Scholar, University of San Francisco, School of Law

Conserving the Vitality of our Historic Places
Historic preservation has defined itself as a field devoted to the protection of significant places against the misguided acts of humans or the impact of natural disasters. While these issues remain of paramount concern, those of us in the field realize that we, the preservationists may be responsible for some of the greatest losses of historic places owing to our own historical biases. Rather than bemoan what has occurred in the past, now and into the future, our great opportunity is to reassess the ways we interpret historic sites and develop strategies for maintaining the vitality of these places.
The Will and Nan Clarkson Visiting Chair program invites distinguished scholars and professionals to campus for lectures and seminars that engage students, faculty and members of the public in knowledge-sharing and debate on critical issues in architecture, planning and design. The program was founded by Will and Nan Clarkson in 1991.
Spring 2019 Public Programs | Discursive Practices
DISCURSIVE PRACTICES presents the work of architects, urban planners, preservationists and historians whose approach to design bridges multiple territories of knowledge to create new work.
Their provocations operate on discourses that simultaneously have long historical traditions and are actively evolving in the present. By acknowledging and engaging with the cultural and institutional basis of inherited knowledge systems, these speakers challenge reductive modes of analysis and reveal openings for expanding the social reach and relevance of contemporary design.
AIA and AICP continuing education credits are available.
The public lecture series of the School of Architecture and Planning is supported by the following individuals and companies:
