Capital of Guinea-Bissau
Bissau is the capital city of Guinea-Bissau, on the coast of West Africa. It's near the point where the Geba River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Bissau Velho, the old city center, is filled with decaying Portuguese colonial buildings.
Nearby, Fortaleza d’Amura is an old fort still used by the country's military. Up the road, the war-damaged former Presidential Palace has a neoclassical facade.

Bissau Calm After President, Military Chief Assassinations
Military leaders in Guinea-Bissau say they will respect constitutional order after mutinous soldiers killed President Joao Bernardo Vieira. The assassination occurred hours after the country's military chief, General Batista Tagme Na Waie, died in a bomb blast. Soldiers loyal to the army chief attacked the presidential palace, killing President Vieira as he tried to flee. The president's death has prompted Portugal to call an emergency meeting of the eight-member Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries. The African Union condemned the killings as cowardly and heinous attacks.

STORYLINE:
Angola's vice foreign minister toured the rocket damaged house of Guinea-Bissau's assassinated president on Thursday.
Joao Bernardo Nino Vieira, who had ruled the tiny, coup-prone West African nation for two decades, was gunned down on Monday in front of his wife inside their villa in the capital Bissau.
Later on Thursday an official from ECOWAS, a regional bloc of 15 African states, met with Vieira's widow.
Vieira and his long-standing rival, the head of the armed forces, were both assassinated in back-to-back attacks
beginning on Sunday night, when a bomb hidden underneath a staircase killed the army chief inside his office.
His inner circle pointed the finger at Vieira and hours later, the president was assassinated.
On Tuesday, head of Parliament Raimundo Pereira became the country's new interim president, quelling speculation the army had been planning a coup and marking a welcome continuation of democratic rule after the two killings shocked the nation.
The military have blamed an isolated group of soldiers for Vieira's assassination and categorically denied the death was retribution for the killing a day earlier of Vieira's longtime rival, armed forces chief of staff General Batiste
Tagme na Waie.
The U.N. Security Council has condemned the assassinations and called on Guinea-Bissau's government to bring those responsible for the killings to justice.
Guinea-Bissau has suffered multiple coups and attempted coups since 1980 when Vieira himself took power in one and now the former Portuguese colony is struggling to stem a booming cocaine trade.
He was forced out 19 years later at the onset of the country's civil war, later returning from exile in Portugal to run in the country's 2005 election and win the vote.
Vieira's death creates a dangerous opening in light of the country's appeal to cocaine smugglers.
While demand for cocaine has levelled off in the U.S., it continues to rise in Europe, forcing Latin American drug
cartels to aggressively seek new routes to smuggle cocaine to Europe.
In recent years, they have begun flying small, twin-engine planes to Africa's West coast, where they land on deserted islands or on dirt runways and then parcel out the drugs to dozens of smugglers who ferry them north.
The government estimates that as much as 1,750 pounds (800 kilogrammes) of the drug is transiting the country's borders each week, an amount worth billions of dollars per year.
It's unclear how the assassinations of the two powerful figures will affect the drug trade, many however have long suspected that the army chief and the president were complicit in the trade.

STORYLINE:
Guinea Bissau president Joao Bernardo Vieira was received by Cuban Interim-President and Minister of Defence Raul Castro on Monday at Havana's Palace of the Revolution.
Vieira held formal talks at the palace with Raul Castro, who has headed Cuba's government since his older brother Fidel underwent intestinal surgery in mid-2006.
Vieira has been in Cuba since Sunday.
According to official sources, Vieira will hold meetings with several top Cuban officials and visit places of scientific, cultural and historic importance.
Hours before the meeting with Raul Castro, Vieira paid tribute to Cuba's national hero, Jose Marti, by laying a wreath at the base of the Marti monument located in Revolution Square.
The two countries have enjoyed close relations for over 30 years.
In October of 1973, Cuba and Guinea Bissau established official diplomatic relations after Cuban troops participated in Guinea Bissau's war for independence.
Cuban officials have not said how long the visit will last nor have they confirmed if Vieira will meet with ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
Castro has not been since in public since July 26, 2006, when he announced that emergency intestinal surgery was forcing him to step down in favour of a provisional government headed by his younger brother Raul.
