The second episode in an ongoing series of brief videos filled with interesting details regarding the lives and miracles of well-known and lesser-known saints, and the devotions and traditions that have developed around them over time.

Saint Bernadette Soubirous, who was born in Lourdes, France on January 7, 1844, almost lived in a padded cell and did live in a jail cell...That's right! Due to hard times for the Subirous family, Bernadette spent her youth in a single-room basement-level home that formerly housed prisoners, known as the dungeon. And the padded cell? Well, that was nearly the result of her fascinating story.
From February 11 to July 16, 1858, 14 year-old Bernadette experienced 18 visions of a beautiful Lady in a local grotto and by the time of her final apparition, as many as 20,000 people had traveled to witness the events. During one vision, the Lady asked Bernadette to drink from a spring in the ground, only there was no spring. So, a confused Bernadette used her bare hands to dig up the ground before finally splashing some damp mud to her mouth.
This prompted many locals, who could not see the Lady, to claim Bernadette had gone insane, but within days, a powerful spring began to flow from the muddy hole and reports of miraculous healings soon followed. Further vindicating the visions, the Lady revealed her name to Bernadette as The Immaculate Conception: an 1854 dogma defined by Pope Pius IX, and a phrase that Bernadette had never even heard before.
To escape her newfound and undesired fame, 22-year old Bernadette left Lourdes to join the Sisters of Charity convent in Nevers, but upon her arrival, even the mistress of novices complained: If the Blessed Virgin wanted to appear on Earth, why would she choose a coarse and uneducated peasant, rather than a learned and virtuous religious?
Bernadette spent the rest of her life there, working primarily as an infirmary assistant. But after years of difficult health issues, including asthma, Bernadette died from tuberculosis in 1879 at only 35 years old. Amazingly, Bernadette then joined a small group of saints, known as The Incorruptibles, whose bodies have refused to decompose after death.
St. Bernadette's visions in Lourdes have inspired dozens of books, and four major motion pictures...including 1943's Oscar-winning film, Song of Bernadette.
Today, in France, only Paris has more hotels than Lourdes, and more than 5 million pilgrims seeking healing and renewed faith visit the small town every year...To-date, 67 people have experienced cures that the Lourdes Medical Bureau has classified as inexplicable. But, St. Bernadette herself said that only faith and prayer can cure, which is probably why she was named the patron saint of the sick.
Bernadette was beatified in 1925, then canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1933...and while the Vatican declared the apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes worthy of belief, Bernadette's canonization was not founded on the visions, but rather on the holiness she exhibited in her life.
...and that's how a shy, young French girl became the saint we know today.

Jail for France's 'dentist of horror' BBC News
Jacobus van Nierop dubbed the dentist of horror has been sentenced to eight years in jail in France.
Prosecutors said he took pleasure in causing horrific injuries to patients in the small central town of Chateau-Chinon.

L'amour en prison : Prison de Caen
Détention ne signifie pas absence totale de vie sentimentale et sexuelle. En France, les détenus peuvent échanger du courrier, et donc entretenir une relation sentimentale. Mais ils ne disposent d'aucun endroit intime pour recevoir leur femme. Les relations sexuelles, même difficiles, existent à l'intérieur même de la prison, dans les parloirs, de grandes pièces divisées en petits boxes, séparés par des cloisons amovibles. C'est ici qu'ils reçoivent des visites deux fois par semaine : visiteurs, famille, enfants… Dans ce brouhaha, les couples essayent de s'isoler comme ils peuvent, rapprochant les cloisons, se cachant de la vue des enfants…. C'est ainsi qu'ils entretiennent des relations sexuelles furtives, tolérées par les surveillants et par la direction de la prison.

Strauss-Kahn Accused of 'Gang Rape' at Orgy

Possible new charges for disgraced former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn. The man once famously accused of sexually assaulting a New York hotel maid last year may be charged for another alleged assault in 2010. France 24 explains.
Judges investigating the various cases of an alleged prostitution ring ... they're investigating now possible rape, which only adds to a ever-thickening file.
Strauss-Kahn is accused of pimping, money laundering and fraud. But a testimony from one of the women working at Strauss-Kahn's sex parties described an incident prosecutors referred to as gang rape. WJLA explains.
Authorities are investigating if Strauss-Kahn raped a woman here at the W Hotel in Washington. Investigators say new evidence suggests the financier sexually assaulted a Belgian prostitute at a sex party at the hotel.
The woman says Strauss-Kahn pinned her down and performed sex acts on her against her will. But while the allegations are serious, the media responded with a yawn.
Like a writer for Jezebel, who called the story the World's Least Surprising Gang Rape Accusation.
And a writer for New York Magazine who, in a bit of an understatement, introduced Strauss-Khan as a lecherous scandal-magnet.
A writer for the Atlantic Wire defends the media's collective shrug, saying it's just too hard to keep track of the appalling things Strauss-Kahn is accused of.
Forgive us, but we've lost count of who DSK has allegedly sexually assaulted ... allegedly sexually assaulted but had charges dismissed ... allegedly sexually assaulted but statute of limitations had passed ... oh and there's his current alleged pimping probe too.
But not all of the ire was directed at DSK. Some of it was directed at the coverage itself. A writer for the American Prospect took issue with the New York Times' headline, New Sex Allegations Against Strauss-Kahn.
Sexual assault isn't a 'sex allegation.' It's a rape allegation. No one cares if DSK is alleged to have had sex. ... What we care about is whether he assaulted someone, sexually or otherwise. If someone is arrested for allegedly breaking into a jewelry store and stealing a Rolex, we don't call it a 'shopping allegation.'
The court won't officially start an investigation or charge Strauss-Kahn until after Sunday's French presidential election. Strauss-Kahn was once a leading presidential hopeful for the Socialist Party.

Battle of Agincourt
The Battle of Agincourt was a major English victory in the Hundred Years' War. The battle occurred on Friday, 25 October 1415 (Saint Crispin's Day), near modern-day Azincourt, in northern France. Henry V's victory at Agincourt, against a numerically superior French army, crippled France and started a new period in the war during which Henry married the French king's daughter and then Henry's son, Henry VI, was made heir to the throne of France.
Henry V led his troops into battle and participated in hand-to-hand fighting. The French king of the time, Charles VI, did not command the French army himself as he suffered from severe, repeating illnesses and moderate mental incapacitation. Instead, the French were commanded by Constable Charles d'Albret and various prominent French noblemen of the Armagnac party.
