Avignon France Travel Guide - Sur le Pont d'Avignon ... | 90 + Countries with 3 Kids
As you explore Avignon, you will realize that large parts of the town and numerous buildings have been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites, which is not something you’ll come across every day.
Their famous bridge and palace are the first ones on the UNESCO’s list, but there are many other protected sites as well, including the Avignon Cathedral, the Museum of the Petit Palais and the protective walls leading up to the bridge.
Previously mentioned museum looks like a giant fortress and houses an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance and Middle Ages.
Did you know that between the years 1309 and 1377, Avignon, was the seat of the papacy, not Rome? The popes who lived in Avignon ordered the construction of the palace you can visit today, as well as fortification walls that still surround the center of the city.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a fine example of a charming rural French village with a special character of its own. Definitely worth visiting, the village is located about 12 miles or 20 kilometers south of Avignon in the heart of Provence.
Subscribe now:
It’s a good destination any time, but extra special on a Wednesday morning with the outdoor food and flea market going strong, as we’ll show you coming up soon in the program.
Provence in the south of France is famous for its outdoor markets and you'll find the market at Saint-Rémy is one of the best.
But just simply walking the pedestrian lanes of this small town any day of the week is probably the most interesting thing you could do here and we are going to show you all the places to see.
The village center is small enough that you can just walk any place you like, it doesn't take long, and you won't get lost, but this map route gives you some idea of a sequence of lanes you can easily walk through the little town. That would only take you about one hour altogether to cover the entire village, but of course you’ll want to linger, do some shopping, take some pictures and look around.

Les Baux-de-Provence, France part 1 the village
The town of Les Baux-des-Provence in the south of France is a remarkable sight, a unique stone village whose important history dates to the Middle Ages, with an ancestry stretching further back for millennia. On a rocky plateau surrounded by steep cliffs, Les Baux has survived through various important historical periods, sometimes playing a major role. As a medieval fortress it was easy to defend. Then in Renaissance days it continued as a thriving village. In later times it was falling apart and rather depopulated, but it was then rebuilt in the middle 20th century and renovated and restored. André Malraux, the France culture minister had a lot to do with preserving this town and now it's a great attraction for the visitor. We wander along the pedestrian lanes, do a little shopping and enjoy spectacular views. Our tour was conducted by Provence Reservations.

Aix en Provence France | The City of 1000 Fountains | 90 + Countries with 3 Kids
Welcome to our tour of Aix-en-Provence!
Aix-en-Provence in Southern France is a charming little city that is just a short drive away from the beaches of the Côte d’Azur. It received its name from a thermal spring and it was founded as Aquae Sextiae by Sextius Calvinus in 122BC. This means that Aix-en-Provence is packed with history. With more than 300 sunny days each year it’s the perfect place for romantic and holiday vacations where visitors can enjoy its facades, cobblestone streets and thermal springs.
Often called Aix by locals, this city is one of the most appealing destinations in the South of France. Known as is the city of a thousand fountains, it has a backdrop of breathtaking mountains and countryside, and is home to some fantastic gastronomy.
Thanks to its compact centre, this is a city that’s easily explored on foot. We recommend you first visit the main thoroughfare, Cours Mirabeau, a street lined with cafés, restaurants and elegant houses, all shaded by rows of centuries-old trees.
Here, on Cours Mirabeau, you will get to see three of the city’s more notable fountains. The first one is a 19th-century work depicting King René holding the Muscat grapes he introduced to Provence in the 15th century. The second is a natural hot spring covered in moss, dating back to Roman times and the last one is a 1860 La Rotonde, beneath three giant statues representing art, justice and agriculture. However, the most spectacular fountain of all is the 17th-century Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins (Fountain of the Four Dolphins) in the Quartier Mazarin.

Pont du Gard, France, with local guide
Pont du Gard in the south of France, is one of the great sights from ancient Rome, the second-highest building they ever constructed. We get a local perspective from our French guide Marc Jonas, with Provence Réservation, who explains the amazing aqueduct and the history. Pont du Gard is part of an ancient, 26 mile water channel about in length, built mostly on or beneath the ground to carry water to Nimes. The Romans constructed this bridge across the valley about 2,000 years ago to maintain an even flow of water with just a very slight change in level, dropping only about one inch every 300 feet. This engineering feat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The river valley here is just really quite gorgeous - you have the forest and the rocky shores on both sides, which makes it a very picturesque setting. It's a huge structure with the enormous volume of stone. It's a local limestone. It was quarried from just about a quarter-mile away from the bridge itself and there's it as much volume of solid stone here equal to the solid volume of the Eiffel tower. That's how big it is, they measured it at 21,000 m³ of rock that ways 50,000 tons huge structure. Tour conducted by Provence Reservations

Honeymoon in Provence, Episode 268
On today’s episode Annie Sargent brings you a conversation with Denise Sum from Canada about her 10-day honeymoon in Provence. The newlyweds stayed in Avignon, visited Arles, the Pont du Gard, Uzès, drove around the the Petit Lubéron (where they found a lovely bed & breakfast listed below), and ended in Marseille.
How to Plan Your Honeymoon in Provence Listening to this episode will make your own honeymoon planning much easier because Denise did the hard work: she found great accommodations, great restaurants and she even figured out the best way to get around in Provence!
Transportation in Provence Provence is tricky because there are places you can't get to without a car. And yet there are times when having a car in Provence makes everything difficult because there is nowhere to park!
Denise and her husband used a combination of train and car rental, which is the best way to proceed. You definitely don't want to hold on to your rental car in large cities in Provence because parking will drive you nuts!
On the other hand, parking in small Provençal villages in late September / early October wasn't an issue. The key is to plan ahead and book your rental in advance because last-minute car rentals cost a fortune in France!
Is Marseille worth a Visit? In this episode we also discuss the age-old question: is Marseille a good place to visit in Provence? This conversation starts 35 minutes into the episode, but to summarize, we both think Marseille is a wonderful place if moving around multi-cultural environment feels natural to you.
What if You Don't Want to Use Airbnb? More and more people are weary of using Airbnb. Denise found great places to rent through Booking. To find the gems, go to this page, then scroll down and on the left you'll see a lot of criteria, including Apartments, Villas, Hostels, and price range. It's worth mentioning because a lot of people don't know it's a possibility!
Provence Accommodations Recommendations Great Apartment in Avignon
Maison d'Ulyse near Pont du Gard
Le Clos des Eydins in Bonnieux
Restaurants Recommendations Denise’s husband is a chef, so they paid attention to restaurants and have great recommendations for lovely places to eat.
La Fourchette and L'Agape in Avignon
Lunch and L'Occitane Spa at La Maison d'Uzes
Bistrot le 5 in Menerbes
Le Petit Cabanon and Le Bistro du Cour in Marseille
Click play to listen or if you'd rather read our conversation click on transcript. You'll also find Denise's notes by visiting the guest notes.
