Racing at the 4-17 Southern Speedway - Punta Gorda, Florida

The 4-17 Southern Speedway is an asphalt, 3/8th mile racetrack located in Punta Gorda, Florida, United States. The track was built in 1990 by LeRoy Davidson who operated it until 1995. It started off its life playing host to Super Late Models, late models, sprint cars, sportsmen, open wheeled modified, FASTRUCK, FASTKIDS, and several other types of racing. It sported one of the largest fields of late models in the South. The track was featured several times on the cover of Circle Track Magazine as one of the top circle tracks in the South Eastern United States.

Seminole Gulf Railway freight train in Fort Myers, Florida

Wednesday, January 3, 2018, 12:33 PM. The Seminole Gulf Railway is a short line railroad company that operates on two CSX-owned rail lines, the one in this video their Fort Myers Subdivision which runs from Arcadia, Florida to Bonita Springs, Florida. In this video a short Seminole Gulf freight train passes the Murder Mystery Train depot in Fort Myers. ****I didn't know it at the time, but my wife took her own video of this train from back near our car. Click here to see it: **** I got curious about identifying the two locomotives on this train, and finally found the lead engine in a video by Gator Train Chaser (his video can be seen here: ) The other locomotive was at rrpicturearchives.net. The engines are: SGLR 594 is a GE B39-8E, SGLR 578 is an EMD GP10.

Long hidden on the fringe of Florida's Gulf coast and overlooked by developers until well into the 1880s, Naples' catalyst for settlement finally arrived forty years later when two rival railroads rolled into town within ten days of each other.

Set in Naples' restored Seaboard Air Line Railway passenger station, the Naples Depot Museum welcomes visitors back to the railroading boom days of the Roaring Twenties and explains how generations of Southwest Floridians used technology and transportation to conquer a vast and seemingly impenetrable frontier.

Seminole dugout canoes, a mule wagon, antique swamp buggy, restored rail cars and exciting interactive exhibits tell the story of how trade and travel transformed Naples from a napping village of 300 souls into today's glittering Gulf coast resort.

The Naples Depot Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is conveniently located in downtown Naples.

In 1883 the Savannah, Florida, and Western Railroad was extended from Live Oak to Gainesville and a post office and railroad station were established under the name of Santaffey, which was the common spelling of the nearby Santa Fe River. In 1888 the name was changed to High Springs and in the next few years the town prospered as a result of phosphate mining in the area. In 1893 the town was incorporated and the railroad completed its connection to Tampa. The community of High Springs was built and prospered because of honest hard work of men and women who toiled on the railroad, in the mines, and in the fields.

In cooperation with the University of Florida, High Springs is now involved in the restoration of her downtown area. The two adjacent buildings which now house The Great Outdoors Restaurant were restored in 1986. The old trading company building was generally known as the Opera House. It was built circa 1895. The bottom floor housed many different mercantile firms over the years and the top floor was where the stage performances, silent movies, and dances were held. The old cafe building was originally built as a barber shop circa 1915.

High Springs has become a center for those interested in the great outdoors. The area offers canoeing, kayaking, and fishing on the Santa Fe, Ichetucknee, and Suwannee Rivers, hiking at O'Leno State Park, and swimming, tubing, and diving in the numerous crystal clear springs. This area's extensive system of underwater caverns offers the best cave diving in the world and attracts visitors from around the globe to experience this dangerous sport.

Biking the Legacy Trail

Extending from Venice north to Sarasota, the Legacy Trail is a straight-as-an-arrow railroad corridor converted to a paved bike path. We rode the southern half between the terminus trailhead at the historic Venice Depot and the entrance gate to Oscar Scherer State Park, riding around a couple of construction-related detours along the route. Near Venice, the trail offers waterway views that you won’t see from the roads.
