Acropolis of Rhodes
The acropolis of Rhodes was located at the western and highest part of the city.
It was not fortified, as was the case with old acropolises, but it constituted a monumental zone with sanctuaries, large temples, public buildings and underground sites of worship. It was abundant in fields and woods, according to the description of orator Aelius Aristides (2nd century AD).
The monuments of the acropolis date back to the Hellenistic and late Hellenistic period.
The buildings were built in a staggered manner at different levels on specially-formed terraces, with strong retaining walls. The spirit of Hellenistic architecture in the acropolis of Rhodes is perfectly expressed through the combination of natural beauty with artificial interventions.
The first excavations were carried out during the Italian occupation of the island (1912-1945).
From 1946 onwards, the Greek Archaeological Service has carried out excavations and has conducted maintenance works at the site of the Temple of Pythian Apollo, which sustained large damages from the 2nd World War bombardments, and because of the weight of the cannons that had been placed there. In 1996 renovation works began on the Temple itself and the Nymphaeums.
The acropolis has yet to be fully excavated. There is an archaeological zone of about 309 acres that has been excluded from modern construction, with a view to the continuation of excavations for the purpose of revealing the brilliant ancient city of Rhodes.

Rhodes Island, Greece - part 3 (Rhodes town) / Rodos, Rhodos /
One of the tourist hotspots of Greece, Rhodes (1412 sq km) is situated in the eastern Aegean Sea and is the largest of the Dodecanese islands. More than half of its inhabitants (island population now well over 100,000) live in the town of Rhodes (also spelled Rhodos, or Rodos). Rhodes town is still famous worldwide for the legendary Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
On the hill of Aghios Stephanos (Monte Smith) stands the Acropolis of ancient town, where the remains of the temples of Athena Polias, of the Pythian Apollo and of Zeus can still be seen (as well as the restored theatre and stadium dating from 3rd century BC).
Also known as the town of the Crusaders, the medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. The Knights of Saint John built the fortifications in the 14th-15th century to protect the town. The northern part (known as Castello, or Kollakio) served as an administrative centre and as the residential quarter of the Knights (the Street of the Knights is one of the most beautiful spots of the old town); the other part, much larger, is known as Hora and includes the commercial centre of the town, where the Greeks, the Jews and the Westerners had their dwellings.
At the entrance of Mandraki harbour, the Saint Nicholas fort, the lighthouse, and the bronze reindeers atop tall columns - characteristic landmarks of Rhodes - can be seen.
Modern Rhodes has nothing special, but the Italian buildings near Mandraki old harbour are worth a visit; in the same area, the Mosque of Mourad Reis is one of interesting remnants of almost 400 years of Turkish presence on the island.

Monte Smith and The Acropolis of Rhodes.
Overlooking the city from the west and situated on the city’s highest point Monte Smith is the Acropolis of Rhodes, which unlike other ancient acropoleis was not fortified. The monuments date from the Hellenistic and late Hellenistic periods (3rd to 2nd centuries BC) and include sanctuaries, public buildings, temples and underground places of worship.
Preserved within the beautifully landscaped and verdant archaeological park is the Hellenistic stadium from the 3rd century BC. Here athletic competitions were staged as part of the Haleion Games, an important celebration held by the ancient Rhodians in honour of the god Helios. Right next to the stadium is the small restored marble theatre, where in antiquity and today musical performances are given. In a dominant position at the summit of the hill is the Temple of Pythian Apollo, the city’s guardian.

Delphi - Greece
Delphi (Greek Δελφοί, [ðe̞lˈfi]) is an archaeological site and a modern town in Greece on the south-western spur of Mount Parnassus in the valley of Phocis. Delphi was the site of the Delphic oracle, the most important oracle in the classical Greek world, and it was a major site for the worship of the god Apollo. His sacred precinct in Delphi was a Panhellenic sanctuary, where every four years athletes from all over the Greek world competed in the Pythian Games, the precursor to the Olympic Games.
Delphi was revered throughout the Greek world as the site of the omphalos stone, the centre of the earth and the universe. In the inner hestia (hearth) of the Temple of Apollo, an eternal flame burned. After the battle of Plataea, the Greek cities extinguished their fires and brought new fire from the hearth of Greece, at Delphi; in the foundation stories of several Greek colonies, the founding colonists were first dedicated at Delphi.Delphi site is located in lower central Greece, on multiple plateau/terraces along the slope of Mount Parnassus, and includes the Sanctuary of Apollo, the site of the ancient Oracle. This semicircular spur is known as Phaedriades, and overlooks the Pleistos Valley. Southwest of Delphi, about 15 km (9.5 mi) away, is the harbor-city of Kirrha on the Corinthian Gulf.
Delphi Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Delphi in Greece.
Set in the picturesque, deeply fissured hillside of the Parnass, Delphi is where over 2000 years ago the Greeks sought spiritual advice from the god Apollo, who they believed spoke to them through an oracle.Delphi was home to the Amphictyonic League, the most important of the Greek city states, and was also the location of the Pythian Games. Two eagles dispatched by Zeus from the end of the world met at the foot of Mount Parnassus in Delphi, thus creating the ‘omphalos’ or ‘navel of the world’. It was hoped that the priestess attendant at the site, Pythia, would impart the will of God which she expressed through her ‘raging mouth’, in ecstasy. This idyllic location, which includes the holy temple of Athena Pronaia, has retained its mystique right up to the present day.

Ancient Delphi, an Important Historical Site in Greece
Delphi is both an archaeological site and a modern town in Greece on the south-western spur of Mount Parnassus in the valley of Phocis. The site of Delphi was believed to be determined by Zeus when he sought to find the centre of Grandmother Earth (or Gaia). He sent two eagles flying from the eastern and western extremities, and the path of the eagles crossed over Delphi where the omphalos, or navel of Gaia was found.
Delphi was the site of the Delphic oracle, the most important oracle in the classical Greek world, and became a major site for the worship of the god Apollo after he slew Python, a dragon who lived there and protected the navel of the Earth.
Apollo's sacred precinct in Delphi was a panhellenic sanctuary, where every four years, starting in 586 BC athletes from all over the Greek world competed in the Pythian Games, one of the four panhellenic games, precursors of the Modern Olympics. The victors at Delphi were presented with a laurel crown which was ceremonially cut from a tree by a boy who re-enacted the slaying of the Python. These games, though, were different from the games at Olympia in that they were not of such vast importance to the city of Delphi as the games at Olympia were to the area surrounding Olympia. Delphi would have been a renowned city whether or not it hosted these games; it had other attractions that led to it being labeled the omphalos (navel) of the earth, in other words, the center of the world.
Delphi is small enough that walking is really the only means of transportation required. The museum and archaeological site are both in walking distance from the town.

Delphi theatre, delphi theatre greece tours from athens | The Ancient Theater
Delphi is both an archaeological site and a modern town in Greece on the south-western spur of Mount Parnassus in the valley of Phocis. In myths dating to the classical period of Ancient Greece (510-323 BC), the site of Delphi was believed to be determined by Zeus when he sought to find the centre of his Grandmother Earth (Ge, Gaea, or Gaia). He sent two eagles flying from the eastern and western extremities, and the path of the eagles crossed over Delphi where the omphalos, or navel of Gaia was found.[2]
Earlier myths include traditions that Pythia, or the Delphic oracle, already was the site of an important oracle in the pre-classical Greek world (as early as 1400 BC) and, rededicated from about 800 BCE, when it served as the major site during classical times for the worship of the god Apollo. Apollo was said to have slain Python, a dragon who lived there and protected the navel of the Earth.[3] Python (derived from the verb πύθω (pythō),[4] to rot) is claimed by some to be the original name of the site in recognition of Python which Apollo defeated.[5] The Homeric Hymn to Delphic Apollo recalled that the ancient name of this site had been Krisa.[6] Others relate that it was named Pytho and that Pythia, the priestess serving as the oracle, was chosen from their ranks by a group of priestesses who officiated at the temple.more info :

This ancient stadium, built during the 4th century BC, is said to be one of the best-preserved of its kind. Once seating up to 6500 spectators, this place was used not only for athletic events during the Pythian games but also as a concert venue. The surroundings of this stadium are simply spectacular.

The Delphic Maxims
The Delphic Maxims are a collection of 147 maxims that are understood to be delivered by the deity Apollo Himself to the Oracle at Delphi, who divinely inspired the Seven Sages, seven early-6th-century BCE philosophers, mystics, politicians, and law-givers, who wrote them down. They are usually identified as:
Solon of Athens (c. 638 – 558 BCE) a famous legislator and reformer from Athens, framing the laws that shaped Athenian democracy.
Khilon of Sparta (fl. 6th century BCE) a Spartan politician to whom the militarization of Spartan society was attributed.
Thales of Miletos (c. 624 – c. 546 BCE) is the first well-known philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer. His maxim, “Know thyself,” was engraved on the front facade of the Oracle of Apollo in Delphi.
Bias of Priene (fl. 6th century BCE) was a politician and legislator known for being an advocate.
Kleoboulos of Lindos (fl. 6th century BCE) governed as tyrant of Lindos, in the Greek island of Rhodes.
Pittacus of Mitylene (c. 640 – 568 BCE) governed Mytilene on the island of Lesbos. He tried to reduce the power of the nobility and was able to govern with the support of the popular classes, whom he favored.
Periander of Korinthos (fl. 627 BCE) was the tyrant of Corinth in the 7th and 6th centuries BCE. Corinth saw a golden age of unprecedented stability during his rule.
They provide a framework for life of an honest, worthy way of living. They are guidelines and advice, not absolutes, as our ability to think and act for ourselves is a great good that is part of the soul’s essence. You cannot read the Delphic Maxims as absolutes. Especially because some of the maxims are ritual laws rather than moral laws or ethical rules, and following many of them is a matter of self-discipline and serves a ritual function, rather than a moral one. You’re not immoral if you don’t follow some of these, you’re just slightly messing up a ritual agreement and failing in self-discipline. To assume the maxims all relate to absolute morality is a mistake– especially given how many of them are very specific to the times they were written in. For example, Delphic Maxim 95 is Γυναικος αρχε, “Rule your wife.”
It is important to note that Hellenism has an oral tradition as well as a written one, and the oral tradition has reinterpreted many of the written maxims throughout history. There is no reason the oral Hellenic tradition cannot reinterpret them more now.
