Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center (Yekaterinburg, Russia)
Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center is a multi-purpose center that combines socio-cultural, commercial and leisure activities. It follows the design of Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA).
ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño is responsible for the museographic implementation of the permanent exhibition dedicated to the figure of Boris Yeltsin as first president of the Russian Federation. The itinerary of the exhibition is symbolically divided into 7 rooms, each one dedicated to a phase in the creation of contemporary Russia, through scenographic recreations that reconstruct key areas of its history (meeting room of the Politburo, a street in Moscow, an apartment, among others). A large number of audiovisual productions and interactives complete the experience in the rooms.
The visit ends with an area called “Freedom Gallery”. This room,
dedicated to the most important achievement of Yeltsin’s government, focuses on the testimonies of personalities and people on the street, and gives all visitors the opportunity to leave their own freedom-related message in the interactive “What Freedom means to Me”.
The Museum has received the European Museum of the Year Award 2016 –in the Kenneth Hudson category– for its “exceptional and daring achievement, challenging common perceptions of museums in society.
Yekaterinburg: An open-air architecture museum
(5 Jun 2018) LEADIN:
It's often called the world's largest open air constructivist museum. The Russian city of Yekaterinburg is home to around 140 constructivist buildings.
Tourists and football fans are set to roam through its streets when Russia's World Cup kicks off this month.
STORYLINE:
It's a combination of modern technology and engineering methods with the ethos of Soviet Communism.
Constructivism - as it's known - was an innovative architectural style that became popular during the Soviet industrial boom in the 1920s.
Constructivism in Sverdlovsk - as the city was known during Soviet times - started in the 1930s.
Subordinating to Soviet ideology aimed at creating a new world, many architects implemented daring projects across the Soviet Union.
As a booming industrial centre, Yekaterinburg became one of the biggest magnets.
Pre-revolutionary wooden houses on its main street were replaced by 'City of the Future' forms, which symbolised the new social structure.
Here, the creation of new world was taking place through these functional structures, says historian Igor Yankov.
Here, we can see a living area of different quality. And we can see various social services detached: that's a cafeteria, that's a club, that's a bathhouse, that's a laundry, that's a kindergarten and so on, and so on.
One of the most famous examples of constructivism in Yekaterinburg is the Dynamo Sports Centre.
Shaped like a moving ship, it's located on a small peninsula on a city lake.
V-shaped bay windows resemble a bow, windowed balconies look like lifeboats, and a roof structure on top of the main pavilion could almost be a captain's bridge.
Nowadays, the monument is the centre of ongoing debate - many fear a proposed new church nearby may destroy the architectural homogeneity of the area.
The Printing House with its continuous windows, stretching along the entire perimeter, a rounded façade supported by a single column and protruding stairwells encased in semi-circular glass cages, used to accommodate printing facilities and newspaper offices.
Now it's occupied by cafés, a bookstore and a nightclub.
The General Post Office was designed in the shape of a tractor to glorify agricultural workers.
It initially housed a kindergarten, an 800-seat radio theatre and rooms for hobby groups as well as an intercity phone station, telegraph and post office that's still in operation today.
The Post Office, I found it a very striking landmark, says Hanna Nabila, a visitor from Indonesia.
Because it's obvious, it's located in the centre. It's such a great representative.
Lenin Street and its surroundings also host a series of residential complexes, called 'Towns,' which were built for particular professions.
Builders' Town for construction workers, Justice Town for judges and penitentiary workers, Medical Town for doctors, and - the most famous of them all - the Chekists' Town, for employees of the secret police. Cheka, later known as the KGB.
The Chekists' Town's central architectural landmark is Iset Hotel, a former hotel-type dormitory, built in the shape of a semi-circle and resembling a sickle.
Constructivist housing was full of experiments that affected people's lives.
There were no kitchens or bathrooms in the apartments, as everyone was supposed to eat in common cafeterias, wash clothes at a common laundry and bath in a common bath.
Chekists' Town is also widely known by locals for underground tunnels, which are surrounded by sinister urban legends.

New wealth in Siberia - From Moscow to Magadan
The Siberian city of Khanty Mansiysk has become extremely rich thanks to oil. In some parts of Russia, villages are emptying because residents seek better prospects, like the ones happening in Khanty Mansiysk. Jelle visits such a village.
Original title: Siberische belofte
What's left of communism? How big are the differences between the poor and the rich? What is the influence of corruption? Is Russia a young democracy (as former Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende previously said)? Is it a sovereign democracy (according to Putin) or a fascist regime (as read in The Economist)? Jelle Brandt Corstius is looking for the topics that rule the life of ordinary Russians in Russia.

Becoming a Russian Walrus in KAZAN | Trans-Siberian Railway
In this episode of our Russia travel vlog series riding the Trans Siberian Railway, we arrive in the Capital of Tartarstan, Kazan!
scuba
On this leg of our great trip across Russia, we stop at The Blue Lake, a freezing pit of freshwater. Here, we learn about the famous Russian Walrus, or морж. These legendary beasts are brave men (or women) who polar dip in freezing water. While there is no snow this time of year, this lake is fed from ground water deep in the earth, and is a constant 5C.
After unthawing, we explore Kazan, and try traditional Tartarstan cuisine. This includes Chak-Chak, a famous dessert (so famous that there is a museum... we went.)
We end the day at the Kazan Kremlin, a beautiful complex featuring one of the nicest mosques I've ever seen.
A bit of a background story. This is a train journey of 10,000 km across Russia, the biggest country in the world. 25 days to visit Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Ulan-Ude, and Vladivostok.

THIRD CLASS On The TRANS-SIBERIAN // Irkutsk To Ulan Ude
FREE Airbnb CREDIT:
Yes, we DID try out third class on the Trans-Siberian and not once but TWICE. From Perm to Yekaterinburg and from Irkutsk to Ulan Ude which was an overnight train.
A lot of people were messaging me or commenting asking what it was like so I made this short video. Sorry it's not longer and does not show more - we kind of just read our books, ate noodles and went to sleep so not much report.
Third class is WAY cheaper than second and third and the only real difference is less privacy / sharing the cabin with about 80 people in total if the train is full!
Capital of the Urals ready to welcome the world
(4 Jun 2018) LEADIN:
As the FIFA World Cup approaches, Russian cities are preparing to welcome thousands of fans and guests from around the world.
Yekaterinburg, the Capital of the Urals and home to former Russian President, Boris Yeltsin, is no exception.
The city witnessed one of the most crucial moments of Russian history and proudly serves some impressive pelmeni dumplings too.
STORYLINE:
It's known as the Capital of the Urals, Yekaterinburg is getting to ready to play its part in Russia's 2018 World Cup.
Located in the heart of the Ural Mountains, opposition-minded Yekaterinburg has played a role in many crucial moments of Russia's history.
In 1918, the last Russian Czar, Nicholas II and his family were executed here.
Today, at the execution site, the Church on Blood - as it's known - stands as a monument to the event.
Built in 2003, on the ground floor it houses a restored basement, popularly known as the Shooting Room.
The history of the Romanov dynasty ended right behind us, explains historian Sergei Sokolov.
Here was the house of the engineer Ipatiev, located in the beginning of the 20th century, where Bolsheviks brought the last emperor and his family from Tobolsk in 1918.
Here they spent a few months, from April to July, and in mid-July, on night of the 16th, the whole family and servants were executed in the basement of this house.
The original Ipatiev house, where Nicholas II and his family were executed, was demolished by another historical figure, Boris Yeltsin, in 1977.
At that time, Yeltsin was the leader of the Sverdlovsk communist party, just starting his career.
Around 14 years later, he became the first president of a new, democratic Russia.
Yeltsin was born in the tiny village of Butka, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) east of Yekaterinburg.
He held a deep emotional connection to the region until his death in 2007.
To pay tribute to him, the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center, one of the largest and most modern museums in Russia, was opened in 2015.
It exhibits not only explore the period of Russian history under Boris Yeltsin, but also Russian history as a whole.
Among other rarities exhibited in the center is this nuclear briefcase.
Boris Yeltsin was from here, from the Ural region, explains director Dina Sorokina.
He started his career here, in Sverdlovsk, as Yekaterinburg used to be known then, during the Soviet times.
And the beginning of his career certainly takes roots here, in the Ural region, in Sverdlovsk. However, there is also an emotional connection to it.
Yekaterinburg's restaurants specialise in dumplings - or 'pelmeni,' as they're known in Russia.
Historians say dumplings came to the Urals from China, but residents claim the Urals is actually home to the world-famous dish.
Nowadays, pelmeni come with many different fillings, but meat-filled dumplings are the most popular.
The classic recipe of pelmeni is quite simple - mincemeat of pork and beef is wrapped in thin, unleavened dough.
(Ural) people are working class. We work here, especially men, they work hard, explains chef Larisa Sychyova.
There are a lot of factories, that is why the priority is meat, meat, and meat. That is why in the Urals and Siberia (pelmeni) is our priority.
Ural dumplings can be found in almost every café or restaurant. It's claimed they're especially good with vodka.
For a late-night drink, there are dozens of bars and clubs located around the city centre.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia runs 14 June - 15 July.

Moscow mosque opens its doors to non-Muslims
(28 Mar 2016) LEAD IN:
An open day at Moscow's Cathedral Mosque has attracted a large crowd.
Both Muslims and non-Muslims had the opportunity to explore the building and its artefacts.
The mosque, which recently reopened after years of restoration and renovation, hopes to become a centre of social and religious life for Muslims in the Russian capital.
STORY-LINE:
The gleaming domes and spires are a recent addition to Moscow's skyline.
Moscow's new Cathedral Mosque was opened to the public late last year.
And today the mosque has opened its doors to non-Muslims.
A long queue gathers at a display case. Inside there's an important artefact - the 'Hair of Mohammed'.
This was a gift from Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov when the mosque opened in October, 2015.
The mosque's leaders believe this building is important for the country's Muslims.
The mosque is a kind of spiritual shelter, where a person either turns into nothing or is revived. The Moscow Mosque is the main mosque in the whole of Russia. It is a central mosque and it attracts many people, and today we wish to have more non-Muslims here, says Eldar Alliutdinov, Imam of Moscow Cathedral Mosque.
He says Russia's 20 million Muslims live alongside the predominantly Christian population in harmony.
Muslims in Russia are not aliens, they are not people who appeared here a hundred years ago. They are natives, and even many historians argue about this - about who was here on this land earlier, says Alliutdinov.
Muslims or non-Muslims, without divisions along the lines of nationality, have been living next to each other from time immemorial, they live as neighbours. It's true, there were different times - you can have a look at history. But this is not the situation we see in Europe or in America (where there are divisions).
Around two million Muslims now live in Moscow, after an influx from the North Caucasus republics of southern Russia, Azerbaijan and the former Soviet states in Central Asia.
The city also has long had a sizeable Tatar minority.
Part of the day's programme is a Quran reading competition, where children under 14 put their skills to the test.
A crowd gathers to hear the children perform and amongst them a regular visitor to the mosque – Mohammed.
In general there is no such thing as persecution (of Muslims) as some people say. I live, I'm a Muslim. Everything is very peaceful, no one bothers me. What's important is to be a good man, a moral man, and there will be no problems whatsoever, he says.
There are extremist movements - but don't go there, don't become a radical. Live as a common man lives. Have common sense. Everything is very good. No one interferes, no one oppresses.
Also on offer is a guided tour around the mosque, a chance for visitors to learn more about the building and its artefacts.
And Moscow businessman Hadji Ilhomidin Kadirov has come here to pray with his family.
The new mosque has transformed the way he worships.
Everybody knows that 10 to 15 years ago - it's impossible to imagine now - a billion Muslims in the world knew that when we prayed, marked Kurban Bayram (Eid al-Adha), or took part in Ramadan, we sat in the street, on the pavement and prayed under rain and in slush and in snow, he says.
But today the almighty has given us an opportunity such as a multi-storied, beautiful mosque where we can pray, both on regular days and on Fridays.
Brightly coloured pictures of mosques are displayed on easels in one room of the building.
The artworks are produced by children who are busy working away on their masterpieces.
Away from the events of the open-day, prayers continue as usual.
Built on the site of a smaller, more than 100-year-old mosque destroyed in 2011, it can accommodate 10,000 worshippers.
