Qila Rai Pithora, Delhi
Qila Rai Pithora, Delhi -
Qila Rai Pithora was a fortified city and is currently located in the capital city of Delhi. It is said to have been built by Chauhan King Prithviraj Chauhan, one of the prominent rulers of all time, in the 12th century. As per records, Qila Rai Pithora is the extension of Lal Kot, the first-ever city of Delhi, which was built by Tomar kings in the 8th century. However, later on when Qutb al-Din Aibak defeated Prithviraj Chauhan, the fort went under the control of Mamluk dynasty. Today, it is visited by several local tourists and is under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India.
Near Malviya Nagar Metro station. It is the “official” Qila Rai Pithora monument now. It has been developed like a park, complete with a library and an imposing statue of Prithviraj Chauhan.

The timings of this park is from sunrise to sunset, and entry is free for all. Qila rai pithora is located between Saket and mehrauli. The nearest Metrostation to this fort is Malviya nagar , others being the saket and qutub minar metro station.
Now a brief History, Qila Rai pithora along with Lal kot are known as the first city of delhi. Lal kot was founded by anangpal tomar in around 8th century and in around mid eleventh century, anangpal tomar II build lal kot with all the walls and stuff. Later the chauhan rajputs took over delhi from the tomar rajuts and the chauhan king, prithviraj chauhan at that time who was also called as rai pithora, and who also ruled ajmer and delhi between 1169 to 1192, Extended Lal kot by building huge walls and the entire city came to be called as qila rai pithora.Qila in persian means fort or castle. The combined fort extended to six and a half km this whole fort was made with 7 gates and it is said thAt around twenty seven Hindu and Jain temples were built inside the walls of the fortress. The chauhans ruled from qila rai pithora and it remained the capital city of northern India for about 100 years.
It has a beautiful park where you can sit and relax with your family, it also has a jogging track for those who are health conscious. The Park houses a splendid 18 feet statue of the Prithvi Raj Chauhan. Going up on the roof of the library is prohibited.
Now after Shahabuddin Muhammad Ghori defeated prithviraj chauhan in the second battle of tarain in 1192 , prithviraj was captured and than shamsuddin went to his country leaving qutubiddin aibak as his viceory in india. However, Aibak didn't extend or change the fort structure, it remained same through his early successors as well. That's basically it i am not gonaa talk about that in this video. When you enter the complex there is this giant looking monster kind of statue, i Don't know what it is but it's
there. There are pictures around the whole complex which will tell you things related to indian history and culture and things related to fort as well.
It also comes with the library where you will find books about the history an culture of india, you do need to be a member to enter the library. if you don't have membership than there is a second room filled with magazine and news papers for whose who just want to sit and relax and read newspaper. Make note that the timings of the library is 9:00 to 5:00 pm and it remain closed in sunday.
Remains of the fort walls are scattered across South Delhi, visible in present Saket, Mehrauli around Qutb complex, Kishangarh and Vasant Kunj areas. The fort looks especially beautiful in the evenings when its ramparts get all lit up, and is an ideal place to spend a peaceful evening There also lies a small section of fortifications said to be of Jahanpanah, the large walled city built by Muhammad bin Tughlaq in the early 14th c. Muhammad Tughluq after constructing the fort of Adilabad in A.D. 1327 built another fortification, later known as Jahanpanah (Fourth city of Delhi), which enclosed the suburbs of Delhi. This was build to address the constant threat of the Mongols that's why probably the name was jahapanah meaning shelter of the world.
The walls cross the Delhi-Mehrauli road about 14.5-km from Delhi, and can be seen at several points, such as to the north of the Indian Institute of Technology, to the north of Begampuri and south of Khirki mosques, to the north of Chiragh-Delhi, at Satpula and close to the Hauz-Rani Gate of Qila Rai Pithora.
I will be covering lal kot in a seperate video so make sure to check that out as well.

Qila Rai Pithora, also known as Rai Pithora's Fort , was a fortified city built in the 12th century by Chauhan king,
Prithviraj Chauhan. Chauhan Rajputs had taken over the city of Delhi, from
Tomar Rajputs. It also incorporated, much older Lal Kot built earlier by 8th-century Tomar Rajput ruler, Anang Pal I.
Qila is a Persian word meaning a fort or castle. [1] At that time it was either called Durg or Garh Rai Pithora. Durg and Garh are a Sanskrit words meaning Fort and/or citadel. It was from the fort that the Tomar, Chauhan and the Slave Dynasty ruled over Delhi from 12th to 13th century.
In 1160 AD, the Chauhan rulers took over Delhi from Tomars, along with it the fort city of Lal Kot, the first extant city of Delhi. Thereafter Prithviraj Chauhan whose capital was Ajmer in Rajasthan, enlarged the Lal Kot, which had large rubble walls and ramparts, and renamed it Qila (Fort) of Rai Pithora or Qila Rai Pithora. The combined fort extended to six and a half km, and city existed with the fort, while older Lal Kot served as the citadel.[3] However, the Chauhan's didn't rule long over the city, in 1190s the Afghans started attacking. Though Chauhans defeated Muhammad Ghori in the First Battle of Tarain in 1191, a year later in 1192, his general
Qutubuddin Aibak defeated Prithviraj Chauhan in the Second Battle of Tarain, ending their dynasty. This in turn established Muslim rule in India, with his Mamluk dynasty also known as Slave dynasty, the first Sultanate of Delhi. However, Aibak didn't extend or change the fort structure, it remained same through his early successors as well.
