The Quattro Fontane (the Four Fountains) is a group of four Late Renaissance fountains located at the intersection of Via delle Quattro Fontane and Via del Quirinale in Rome. They were commissioned by Pope Sixtus V and built at the direction of Muzio Mattei; installed between 1588 and 1593. The figures of the four fountains represent the River Tiber (the symbol of Rome); the River Arno the symbol of Florence; the Goddess Diana; the symbol of Chastity; and the Goddess Juno, the symbol of Strength. The fountains of the Arno, Tiber, and Juno are the work of Domenico Fontana. The fountain of Diana was designed by the painter and architect Pietro da Cortona.
The intersection where these fountains are situated is SO busy, and with no footpaths, be very careful!

Quattro Fontane è un incrocio di Roma tra le antiche Via Porta Pia (oggi via del Quirinale-via XX Settembre) e Via Felice (il percorso che da Trinità dei Monti porta alla Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, oggi via Sistina-via Quattro Fontane-via A.Depretis) è caratterizzato dalla presenza ai quattro angoli di quattro fontane, che danno il nome all'incrocio, all'omonima strada ed alla Chiesa di San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, che Francesco Borromini costruì tra il 1638 e il 1663 (talvolta chiamata San Carlino). Caratteristica unica a Roma, dall'incrocio si possono vedere, in lontananza, l'Obelisco Esquilino presso Santa Maria Maggiore (a sud-est), l'Obelisco Sallustiano presso Trinità dei Monti (a nord-ovest), l'Obelisco del Quirinale (a sud-ovest) e la michelangiolesca facciata interna di Porta Pia (a nord-est).

The Quattro Fontane (the Four Fountains) is an ensemble of four Late Renaissance fountains located at the intersection of Via delle Quattro Fontane and Via del Quirinale in Rome. The figure of one fountain is said to represent the River Tiber, in front of an oak-tree; a she-wolf, the symbol of Rome, was a later addition. A second fountain represents the River Aniene, a tributary of the Tiber, called Anio in ancient Rome, which provided most Roman aqueducts with water. Pope Sixtus proposed to build a canal to bring the water of the Aniene to Rome. The other two fountains feature female figures believed to represent the Goddess Diana; the symbol of Chastity; and the Goddess Juno, the symbol of Strength, but it is possible that they may also represent rivers. The fountains of the Aniene, Tiber, and Juno are the work of Domenico Fontana. The fountain of Diana was designed by the painter and architect Pietro da Cortona.
The later Baroque church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, by Francesco Borromini, is located near the fountains, and takes its name from them. Until 1964 the Via Quattro Fontane was home to the Pontifical Scots College.

Terminato nel 1587 il restauro ed il ripristino dell'antico Acquedotto alessandrino, chiamato da allora Acqua Felice dal nome del papa Sisto V, al secolo Felice Peretti, sotto il cui pontificato venne terminata l'opera, come era stato fatto in precedenza per l'Aqua Virgo, furono iniziati i lavori per una ramificazione sotterranea secondaria del condotto, in modo da assicurare l'approvvigionamento idrico delle zone dei colli Viminale e Quirinale, allora scarsamente serviti, e venne di conseguenza progettata anche l'edificazione di un certo numero di fontane. Dopo la Fontana del Mosè e contemporaneamente a quella posta davanti al palazzo del Quirinale, Sisto V volle che l'incrocio tra quelle due importanti arterie avesse un degno ornamento. Inizialmente gli vennero proposte quattro statue sacre, ma il pontefice era talmente entusiasta del suo acquedotto che preferì una fontana. Il progetto (il cui autore ci è ignoto) sviluppò invece una fontana per ogni angolo del quadrivio, anche per non intralciare il traffico urbano.

The church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, also called San Carlino, is a Roman Catholic church in Rome, Italy. The church was designed by the architect Francesco Borromini and it was his first independent commission. It is an iconic masterpiece of Baroque architecture, built as part of a complex of monastic buildings on the Quirinal Hill for the Spanish Trinitarians, an order dedicated to the freeing of Christian slaves.
He received the commission in 1634, under the patronage of Cardinal Francesco Barberini, whose palace was across the road. However, this financial backing did not last and subsequently the building project suffered various financial difficulties. It is one of at least three churches in Rome dedicated to San Carlo, including San Carlo ai Catinari and San Carlo al Corso.
The monastic buildings and the cloister were completed first after which construction of the church took place during the period 1638-1641 and in 1646 it was dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo. Although the idea for the serpentine facade must have been conceived fairly early on, probably in the mid-1630s, it was only constructed towards the end of Borromini's life and the upper part was not completed until after the architect's death.
The site for the new church and its monastery was at the south-west corner of the Quattro Fontane which refers to the four corner fountains set on the oblique at the intersection of two roads, the Strada Pia and the Strada Felice. Bernini's oval church of Sant'Andrea al Quirinale would later be built further along the Strada Pia. The inscriptions found in San Carlo, a valuable source illustrating the history of the church, have been collected and published by Vincenzo Forcella.
The concave-convex facade of San Carlo undulates in a non-classic way. Tall corinthian columns stand on plinths and bear the main entablatures; these define the main framework of two storeys and the tripartite bay division. Between the columns, smaller columns with their entablatures weave behind the main columns and in turn they frame niches, windows, a variety of sculptures as well as the main door, the central oval aedicule of the upper order and the oval framed medallion borne aloft by angels. The medallion once contained a 1677 fresco by a Pietro Giarguzzi of the Holy Trinity. Above the main entrance, cherubim herms frame the central figure of Saint Charles Borromeo by Antonio Raggi and to either side are statues of St. John of Matha and St. Felix of Valois, the founders of the Trinitarian Order.
