Florida Keys Ocean Clean Up | Dive Against Debris 2019 | Rainbow Reef Dive Center | Key Largo Fl
As a Blue Star dive shop we work with NOAA within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS). Ocean conservation is extremely important to us!
All of our trips are sponsored by Project AWARE and 4Ocean. Together, we can all use our passion for diving to make the world a better place.
Here at Rainbow Reef Dive Center, we make monthly trips to clean up the beautiful reefs in Key Largo, FL. The debris usually consists of fishing gear like nets, anchors, traps and fishing line.
Other debris typically found varies from plastic bottles to the top of golf carts! We never know what we will find but we still try and do our part in keeping our oceans clean!
Do you want to get involved with our Dive Against Debris? We would love to see you here with us and we can all continue to do our part in keeping the ocean as clean as possible.
Come and join the crew on the third Friday of every month for our RRDC Dive against debris together we all can help make an environmental impact on our oceans one clean up at a time.
So what is happening to all the plastic debris that is being collected from the ocean?
Well, we can tell you that a portion of the plastics collected and recovered are being used to manufacture many products that are used in our everyday lives.
At Rainbow Reef Dive Center and at our retail store you will find such products for sale. We have flip flops made from recycled plastics recovered from our oceans. We have a range of T Shirts manufactured from recycled plastics and they are some of the softest most comfortable shirts you can wear!
So head on over to see us and you can contribute to the ocean clean up and recycling efforts by purchasing these products and being an advocate for recycled plastics.
In turn, spreading the word and helping conservation efforts.

Molasses Reef Night Dive-Calvin as Guide,Rainbow Reef Dive Center,9-15-2012 video by Bridget
Bridget's dive log: So last night was another night dive...wait...LAST NIGHT WAS ANOTHER AMAZAFREAKING NIGHT DIVE ! There..that's better! We moored up on Molasses Reef at the Winch Hole dive site area and entered the water just as it was getting dark. We saw Hawksbill and Loggerhead turtles, a nurse shark that decided to be part of our dive group by using our lights to hunt with (well that's how it seemed) and several eels. Even when our guide, Rainbow Reef's Instructor Calvin, banged his tank to get our attention, no crabs were going to their corners as we had ringside view to a Saturday night fight on the reef with three teeny teeny tiny hermit crabs ganging up on two very small hermit crabs that were fighting. Elsewhere, there was a huge Channel Clinging Crab making its way across a coral ledge with its big claws waving in the water. A beautiful large Spotted Drumfish adult appeared in the beam of Calvin's light and then around the coral corner there was a juvenile drumfish out playing! As Calvin swept his light ahead of us, 4 ft long Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber had its mouth end extended to eat. Oh,and then a Measled Cowrie (not very common for here) was oozing itself along an elkhorn coral. There was so much more. I shot video snippets of most of the critters I mentioned above to try to give you an idea of how fun it is to have them appear before you. I don't have a video light...just using my dive light but this is how we actually saw it anyway - only it was sooooo much better live! Thanks to Capt Eric and first mate Cody for a safe and fun trip to the reef and back. The guides in the water were RRDC Instructors Calvin and Jardin who both did an amazing job of showing everyone the Molasses Reef night life! -Bridget

QUICK FACTS
Molasses Reef is a coral reef located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It lies to the southeast of Key Largo, within the Key Largo Existing Management Area, which is immediately to the east of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. This reef is within a Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA).
An unmanned reef light is located near the reef.
On August 4, 1984, the motor vessel Wellwood, a 122-meter freighter carrying pelletized chicken feed, ran aground on Molasses Reef. The total destruction from the grounding included 5,805 square meters of living corals and injury to 75,000 square meters of reef habitat. The vessel was removed by the US Coast Guard. NOAA coordinated an effort to restore damage to the reef, by placing reef modules in the injured areas to provide a substrate for new coral colonization. Biological restoration took place using transplants from Pickles Reef and the facilitation of coral larval settlement. NOAA settled a claim worth $6.275 million with the responsible parties, the Wellwood Shipping Company (owner of the vessel) and the Hanseatic Shipping Company (shipping management company), in 1986, and all payments to NOAA were completed by 2001

Rainbow Reef Dive #1 - Duane Wreck
The Duane Wreck - Key Largo, FL
The USCGC William J. Duane, none simply as the Duane, is a 327ft Coast Guard Cutter that was named after the Secretary of the Treasury under President Andrew Jackson. She was built in 1936 along with six other Coast Guard Cutters.
The Duane had a very storied career. She served patrol duty in the North Atlantic and Viet Nam. She served convoy escort duty in 1942, served as the flag ship for Major General John O’Daniel who headed Operation Dragoon during the D-Day invasion and assisted in the sinking of a German U-Boat. The Duane has a connection to the history of the State of Florida. She served escort duty during the Mariel Boat Lift which brought thousands of Cuban Refugees to the Florida Keys in 1980. Her proudest accomplishments were the hundreds of lives saved during her service.
The Duane was sunk in 1987 and quickly became the number one wreck dive in the United States of America. She sits upright in the sand at a maximum depth of 125ft. Her deck is at 100ft. and the top of the crow’s nest is at 50ft. You can see most any of the varied reef fish that Key Largo offers. The really exciting part of diving on the Duane is the squadron of Great Barracuda that patrol the area and the pelagic species that just might swim by such as Bull Sharks and the occasional Whale Shark in the early spring.
This dive is an advanced level dive. All dive operators require either and Advanced Dive Certification with recent diving experience or to be able to show two eighty foot or deeper dives in your log book within the last 12 months. You can also hire one of Key Largo’s experienced dive Instructors or Dive Masters to take you on a guided dive. You should arrange a minimum of one week in advance of your trip.
