Ratnagiri Buddhist Monastery | Jajpur, Odisha, India | Dream Destination Tour
Ratnagiri in the Birupa river valley in the district of Jajpur, is another famous Buddhist centre. The small hill near the village of the same name has rich Buddhist antiquities. A large-scale excavation has unearthed two large monasteries, a big stupa, Buddhist shrines, sculptures, and a large number of votive stupas. This excavation revealed the establishment of this Buddhist centre at least from the time of the Gupta king Narasimha Gupta Baladitya (first half of the sixth century A.D.). Buddhism had developed at this place - unhindered upto the 12th century A.D. In the beginning, this was an important centre of Mahayana form of Buddhism. During the 8th-9th century A.D., this became a great centre of Tantric Buddhism or Vajrayana art and philosophy. Pag Sam Jon Zang, a Tibetan source, indicates that the institution at Ratnagiri played a significant role in the emergence of Kalachakratantra during the 10th century A.D. This is quite evident from the numerous votive stupas with reliefs of divinities of the Vajrayana pantheon. Separate images of these divinities and inscribed stone slabs, and moulded terracotta plaques with dharanis found in the excavation at Ratnagiri. Presently this university of Buddhist learning is found in ruins that attract a number of visitors every year. For lovers of art and architecture, lay tourists as well as special groups, Ratnagiri offers in its magnificent ruins, a large brick monastery with beautiful doorways, cella, sanctum with a colossal Buddha figure, and a large number of Buddhist sculptures. There is a smaller monastery at the place along with a stone temple, brick shrines and a large stupa with numerous smaller stupas around. ratnagiri-buddhist-monuments (2012)
Ratnagiri Lalitgiri and Udayagiri are recently excavated Buddhist monuments in Orissa. You have to take a diversion from Chandikhol to visit these places. This video shows complete coverage of Ratnagiri, fantastic views.
Ratnagiri - The Cradle of Buddhism
Ratnagiri, a low detached hill of Assia range in coastal Odisha across the River Birupa, about 120 km from Bhubaneswar, is quite hill today. But once Ratnagiri sparkled light of Buddhism attracting visitors from far and wide including HuenTsang, the celebrity Chinese Buddhist monk of the 7th century AD.
The main monastery of Ratnagiri has a lovely gate where blue chlorite schist blend beautifully with locally available khondalite stone. It has carvings of geometrical patterns in the shape of lotus buds, balls, creepers and a range of human characters including royalty and divinity. On its lintel there is depiction of Gajalakshmi, the symbol of wealth.
The gate is not only a showpiece of Odisha but also of the entire country. This is mainly for its liberal use of contrasting colours, concept and minute carvings, often leaving a serious visitor spell bound. Once entered through this gem, the visitors are welcomed by a vast courtyard housing both attached and detached images of Buddhist gods and goddesses, such as Padmapani Avaloketesvara and Harita. But the key attraction is a colossal Buddha head with his half closed eyes, protruding nose and leap, and usnisa hair. The Buddha head is filled with compassion. The monastery or the mahavihara of Ratnagiri is the largest in the country. It was two storied and made of bricks. Monks once lived here for generation after generation and welcomed intellectual stalwarts such as Taranath and HuenTsang. They also pursued excellence in artistic creativity.
Beside the mahavihara there is yet another monastery, but much smaller in size. A few meters away stands the mahastupa, a colossal Buddhist stupa made of bricks, surrounded by a large number of smaller and portable stupas, each erected as a commemoration to a dead thera. Ratnagiri has a prized destination for containing the largest number of votive stupas anywhere in the world. The stupas vary in sizes and shapes; some even have niches containing Buddhist gods and goddesses. They are either made of stones or bricks.
