STORYLINE:
The city of Moscow hosted on Sunday the annual festival of sculptures, carved from ice cubes by more than twenty artists from all over Russia.
The unveiling of the festival, which is expected to last several days at the All-Russian Exhibition Complex, attracted several hundred people who braved minus 10 degree Centigrade frost and high humidity.
Russia's flamboyant politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky was seen among the artists, meticulously carving an ice bear, apparently reflecting his new leaning towards the ruling Unity party whose mascot is the bear.

4. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Marina Smirnova, festival organiser:
The Flea Market art project has not been affected by the financial crisis. Maybe because people come here not only for business - of course if there were no business success there were no exhibitors - but rather for the atmosphere here. Music of the 40s and 50s, cup of tea offered to every guest, friendly atmosphere and the desire of all exhibitors to tell people the story of the goods they sell - this is essential.
5. Close up of money-box, United States, 1950s, 5000 rubles ($150)

So it's a very old piece, hand-made and painted by hand and it has been preserved in excellent condition. Such things are very rare.

the flea market is a rummage sale, where everything should be sold for next to nothing. It's a rule, it's the law of the flea market. It's not an antique shop, there is a difference between flea markets and antique shops. But here (at the Flea Market Festival) the prices are absolutely antique.
April 26, 2009 - Moscow, Russia

LEAD IN :
Flea markets are a part of every self-respecting city.
Berlin, London and Paris have numerous outdoor bazaars that draw thousands of visitors every weekend.
Almost all Moscow's flea markets disappeared in Soviet times when the state heightened repression of private trade and speculation.
Those who broke the law could face long prison terms.
But now flea markets are becoming popular once again.
STORYLINE:
Moscow's Flea Market festival is a treasure trove of artifacts.
Held three times each year, buyers can find everything from china ornaments to cast iron household items.

CELEB ART IN MOOSCOW
Moscow has become the 25th city to host CowParade, an international charitable art-festival where hundreds of life-sized fibre-glass cows are placed on the streets.
The first cows appeared in a shopping centre in Red Square and over the next two weeks will appear in locations all over the city.
Sponsors are invited to buy cows which are then painted by celebrities, exhibited in public and auctioned off for charity.
Other cities that have hosted CowParade include Chicago and New York in 1999 and 2000 and London in 2002.

The Russian Revolution 1917
Everything you need to know about the Russian Revolution in a 13 min video. Produced in partnership with Bridgeman Images
We explain all the major events of Russia's TWO revolutions of 1917– the February Revolution that ended Tsarist rule in Russia, and the October Revolution, that brought the Bolsheviks to power. We explain the causes of Tsar Nicholas II's growing unpopularity - the role of the mysterious Siberian mystic Rasputin, Russia's disastrous involvement in World War One, and the events on the streets of Petrograd that led to the Tsar's abdication. That summer Russia lurched from crisis to crisis, with a Provisional Government that faced riots (the July Days), military revolt (the Kornilov Affair), economic chaos, and constantly dwindling support. Socialist Prime Minister Alexander Kerensky, once hailed as Russia's great hope, was unable to restore order, or, in October, prevent the Bolsheviks from launching a coup, organised by Leon Trotsky and led by Vladimir Lenin, that overthrow the Provisional Government and brought the Bolsheviks to power. A brutal civil war followed, leading to the death of more than 10 million Russians – amongst them Tsar Nicholas II and his family, executed by Bolsheviks at Yekaterinburg in July 1918. From the wreckage emerged the Soviet Union, formed in 1922, and destined to be one of the 20th century's two superpowers.

TAMSCHICK MEDIA+SPACE, Time machine: How great HelV is! Wuxi, China 2014
On behalf of ACCIONA Producciones y Diseno, S.A. (APD), we just completed a large format, interactive media installation for the Wu Kingdom HelV Relics Museum in Wuxi / China. The completely projected 400 sqm space interactively tells the story of the Kingdom Wu.
Visitors are immersed in a 15-minute story about the rise of the Kingdom of Wu during the Spring and Autumn Period between 514–496 BC. We created a unique visual style as a mix of cinematic martial arts scenes shot in Shanghai combined with paint-style animations.
The linear storytelling is enhanced with interactive elements that reinforce the visitors’ feeling of being transported back in time, away to king HelV’s coming into power, his fight for hegemony, the victory at the battle of Boju and other great legends of that period.
That’s how we think a time machine should work.

Russia is a sovereign country in Eurasia. At 17,125,200 square kilometres (6,612,100 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world by area, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area, and the ninth most populous, with over 144 million people at the end of December 2017 (excluding Crimea). About 77% of the population live in the western, European part of the country. Russia's capital Moscow is one of the largest cities in the world; other major urban centers include Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod.
Extending across the entirety of Northern Asia and much of Eastern Europe, Russia spans eleven time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both with Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk and the U.S. state of Alaska across the Bering Strait.
The East Slavs emerged as a recognizable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. Founded and ruled by a Varangian warrior elite and their descendants, the medieval state of Rus arose in the 9th century. In 988 it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire, beginning the synthesis of Byzantine and Slavic cultures that defined Russian culture for the next millennium. Rus' ultimately disintegrated into a number of smaller states. The Grand Duchy of Moscow gradually reunified the surrounding Russian principalities, achieved independence from the Golden Horde. By the 18th century, the nation had greatly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration to become the Russian Empire, which was the third largest empire in history, stretching from Poland on the west to Alaska on the east.
Following the Russian Revolution, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic became the largest and leading constituent of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the world's first constitutionally socialist state. The Soviet Union played a decisive role in the Allied victory in World War II, and emerged as a recognized superpower and rival to the United States during the Cold War. The Soviet era saw some of the most significant technological achievements of the 20th century, including the world's first human-made satellite and the launching of the first humans in space. By the end of 1990, the Soviet Union had the world's second largest economy, largest standing military in the world and the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, twelve independent republics emerged from the USSR: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and the Baltic states regained independence: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania; the Russian SFSR reconstituted itself as the Russian Federation and is recognized as the continuing legal personality and a successor of the Soviet Union. It is governed as a federal semi-presidential republic.
The Russian economy ranks as the twelfth largest by nominal GDP and sixth largest by purchasing power parity in 2015. Russia's extensive mineral and energy resources are the largest such reserves in the world, making it one of the leading producers of oil and natural gas globally. The country is one of the five recognized nuclear weapons states and possesses the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Russia is a great power as well as a regional power and has been characterised as a potential superpower. It is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, as well as a member of the G20, the Council of Europe, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as being the leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and one of the five members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), along with Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Prince Michael is driving one of the Bentleys, which he said he borrowed from a friend.
The convoy set off from the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on May 20 for the two-and-a-half thousand kilometre (1,553-mile) run across European Russia.
They are due to roll into St Petersburg's Palace Square on June 2.
The cars are each valued at about two (m) million US dollars.
They were airlifted into Russia specially for the event, which also aims to collect money for two Russian charities.
All the 14 cars were brought to Yekaterinburg from Great Britain by an Antonov heavy-duty aircraft.
The vintage cars are being driven by drivers from Great Britain, the USA, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium and France.
Prince Michael, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, has family ties to the deposed Russian imperial family, being a great nephew of Tsar Nicholas II.
A Russian-speaker, he has been involved in charity work in the country before.
The rally is just one of many events to celebrate Saint Petersburg.
Yekaterinburg, which was known as Sverdlovsk under Soviet rule, was the scene of the execution of Nicholas and his family by revolutionaries in 1918.
The prince campaigned for skeletons found near the scene to be recognised as the remains of the imperial family.
He led a previous Bentley rally to Russia in 1999, crossing Europe from Britain to reach Moscow and other cities.
