Rembrandt (Dutch, 1606-1669) - Paintings by Rembrandt in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (Dutch: July 15, 1606 – October 4, 1669) was a Dutch draughtsman, painter and printmaker. An innovative and prolific master in three media, he is generally considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art and the most important in Dutch art history. Unlike most Dutch masters of the 17th century, Rembrandt's works depict a wide range of style and subject matter, from portraits and self-portraits to landscapes, genre scenes, allegorical and historical scenes, biblical and mythological themes as well as animal studies. His contributions to art came in a period of great wealth and cultural achievement that historians call the Dutch Golden Age, when Dutch art (especially Dutch painting), although in many ways antithetical to the Baroque style that dominated Europe, was extremely prolific and innovative, and gave rise to important new genres. Like many artists of the Dutch Golden Age, such as Jan Vermeer of Delft, Rembrandt was also an avid art collector and dealer.
Rembrandt never went abroad, but he was considerably influenced by the work of the Italian masters and Netherlandish artists who had studied in Italy, like Pieter Lastman, the Utrecht Caravaggists, and Flemish Baroque Peter Paul Rubens. Having achieved youthful success as a portrait painter, Rembrandt's later years were marked by personal tragedy and financial hardships. Yet his etchings and paintings were popular throughout his lifetime, his reputation as an artist remained high, and for twenty years he taught many important Dutch painters.
Rembrandt's portraits of his contemporaries, self-portraits and illustrations of scenes from the Bible are regarded as his greatest creative triumphs. His self-portraits form a unique and intimate biography, in which the artist surveyed himself without vanity and with the utmost sincerity. Rembrandt's foremost contribution in the history of printmaking was his transformation of the etching process from a relatively new reproductive technique into a true art form, along with Jacques Callot. His reputation as the greatest etcher in the history of the medium was established in his lifetime and never questioned since. Few of his paintings left the Dutch Republic whilst he lived, but his prints were circulated throughout Europe, and his wider reputation was initially based on them alone.
In his works he exhibited knowledge of classical iconography, which he molded to fit the requirements of his own experience; thus, the depiction of a biblical scene was informed by Rembrandt's knowledge of the specific text, his assimilation of classical composition, and his observations of Amsterdam's Jewish population. Because of his empathy for the human condition, he has been called one of the great prophets of civilization. The French sculptor Auguste Rodin said, Compare me with Rembrandt! What sacrilege! With Rembrandt, the colossus of Art! We should prostrate ourselves before Rembrandt and never compare anyone with him! Vincent van Gogh wrote, Rembrandt goes so deep into the mysterious that he says things for which there are no words in any language. It is with justice that they call Rembrandt—magician—that's no easy occupation.

The Rijksmuseum (Dutch pronunciation: [rɛi̯ks myˈzeʏm]) (English: State Museum) is a Dutch national museum in Amsterdam, located on the Museumplein. The museum is dedicated to arts, crafts, and history. It has a large collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age and a substantial collection of Asian art. It also displays the stern of the HMS Royal Charles which was captured in the Raid on the Medway, and the Hartog plate.
Amsterdam's best art museum, the Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands is a huge world-famous collection presented in 80 galleries, exhibiting 8,000 objects that tell the story of 800 years of Dutch art and history. This collection focuses primarily on Dutch paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries, rather than trying to present a complete sample of the entire world of art. The museum has a lot to show, thanks especially to the extreme genius of great native painters, Frans Hals, Vermeer, van Ruisdael, Jan Steen, and most-famously, Rembrandt.
Don’t miss out on the absolute highlights, like Vermeer’s Milkmaid, Van Gogh’s Self-portrait and a gorgeous collection of Delft Blue pottery ranging from tea sets to vases,
The total archive includes 1 million objects from the years 1200–2000, with more than 2,000 paintings from the Dutch Golden Age. Some 30 galleries are dedicated to the glory of the Golden Age, when the young mercantile republic led the world in trade, science, shipping and the arts.
Many objects from Dutch history tell the story with Paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, silver, porcelain, delftware, furniture, jewelry, costumes and more. There are also dozens of rooms with medieval arts and later decorative pieces of the 19th century, 17th century miniature house models, along with a sampling of minor Italian Renaissance paintings
The building itself is a major work of art, designed in neo-Gothic and Reneissance styles by Pierre Cuypers, who also designed the similar-looking Central Train Station, both completed in the 1880s. The red terra-cotta façade is adorned with many statues, decorative stripes, reliefs and ceramic plaques, using a mix of medieval and 19th century styles.

3. SOUNDBITE (French) Bertrand Gautier, French art dealer:
We knew it was a Rembrandt, but they didn't think it looked enough like a Rembrandt. So what they did in the 18th century they simply made it bigger. Because in the 18th century, one knows already what is a Rembrandt (painting). Rembrandt was the precursor of 'clair-obscur' (Chiaroscuro), he's somebody who creates space around his figures, who creates a tension. They 'Rembrandtised' what was already a Rembrandt.

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Prof. Christopher Brown, Dutch art expert at Oxford University:
This is a great discovery. It really is absolutely fascinating. This is the very beginning of Rembrandt, more or less the first picture he ever painted, and it's part of a series of pictures. As a very young man, we are talking about an 18-year-old, he painted a series of the five senses. This, of course, is the sense of smell. We have three others already; this is the fourth so we're now looking, of course, for the fifth. It shows really how he began, he's just come out of the workshop of his master Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, he's moved back to his hometown of Leiden, and he set himself up as an independent artist and this is the very beginning. It's slightly crude, the drawing is slightly crude, the colors are very vivid. It's the beginning, it's absolutely beginning.
7. Various of painting
STORYLINE:
French art dealer Bertrand Gautier unveiled on Thursday a painting initially labelled as the work of an unknown artist from Europe's Continental School.
The small oil-on-panel painting of three figures initially dated somewhere in the 19th century had a presale estimate of 500-800 US dollars when it went to auction in New Jersey last year.
Gautier suspected it was older and from Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn.
Unfortunately for Gautier and his partner Bertrand Talabardon, another dealer had the same hunch.
In a few minutes of phone bidding, the price shot up, and in the end the Paris gallery owners paid just over 1 million US dollars, including the buyer's premium.
The painting, restored and now considered a genuine Rembrandt dating from 1624-1625, hung in pride of place at the entrance to the gallery's stand at the prestigious TEFAF art fair in the southern Dutch city of Maastricht.
Part of the reason the painting was not earlier positively identified as a Rembrandt was an 18th-century attempt to make it look more like ... a Rembrandt, Gautier told The Associated Press.
They knew it was a Rembrandt, but they didn't think it looked enough like a Rembrandt, he said. In an effort to add a bit more drama to the lighting, they enlarged the painting and made it darker around its edges. They 'Rembrandtised' what was already a Rembrandt.
The restoration turned up another surprise - the earliest known signature by Rembrandt, a monogram of the letters RF or RHF, believed to stand for 'Rembrandt Harmensz fecit' , meaning, made by Rembrandt - Rembrandt's full name is Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn.
The picture is part of a series depicting the five senses.
It has been titled The Unconscious Patient (Sense of Smell) and shows a woman holding a handkerchief, presumably containing smelling salts, under the nose of a young man who has fainted after a surgeon has performed a blood-letting.

Rembrandt’s Debut in Amsterdam
When he was still in his early 20s, Rembrandt closed his studio in Leiden, the Netherlands, and moved to the expanding metropolis of Amsterdam, where he quickly became the most sought-after painter in the city. His employers included many influential people, including the Prince of Orange, who commissioned biblical pictures from him. Focusing on the Portrait of Aeltje Uylenburgh (1632), John Walsh, B.A. 1961, Director Emeritus of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, considers the artist’s early career and the reasons for his success. Generously sponsored by the Martin A. Ryerson Fund.

The Rijksmuseum, translated to English as National Museum, is a pride of the Netherlands dedicated to the arts and history of Amsterdam. After it’s founding in 1808 it was moved a couple of times, in 1885 it found a home at its current location, Museumstraat 1, 1071 XX Amsterdam, Netherlands. The original building was designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers. It consists of two center squares with an atrium at the center of each and a tunnel that exists at ground level and the first floor Gallery of Honor.
After a ten-year renovation at a cost of € 375 million, the museum was rededicated in April 2013. It is the most visited museum in the Netherlands recording over 2.2 million visits annually. It is in Museum Square in the borough Amsterdam South, neighboring the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Concertgebouw.
The Rijksmuseum curates an astounding collection of 1 million art objects from the years 1200 through 2000. It displays 8,000 pieces at a time in permanent exhibitions, special galleries and highlighted presentations. The museum also includes the Cuypers Library, the Rijksmuseum Research renowned library, noted as the largest public art research library in the Netherlands.
In 2012, the Rijksmuseum curators began a Herculean task of digitalizing the collection into downloadable high-resolution images available for public download via its Rijksstudio web platform. In the first year 125,000 images became available with an intent of adding 40,000 images a year until the entire collection of 1 million art objects are digitally recorded.
Among its treasures the museum is home to over 2,000 paintings from the renowned Dutch Golden Age. It includes works by noted painters such as Jacob van Ruisdael, Frans Hals, Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen, Rembrandt, as well as rare works by Rembrandt's pupils.
An unusual exhibit piece, an artifact of history is the stern of the HMS Royal Charles which was captured during the second Anglo-Dutch war in 1667. Another anomaly exhibit at the museum is a small Asian collection which is displayed in the Asian Pavilion.
The Gallery of Honor features the largest of the paintings by Rembrandt, Night Watch, as its centerpiece. It also features two of the most well-known paintings in the world, Milkmaid by Vermeer, as well as the most famous selfie in history, Self Portrait by Vincent Van Gogh. Among the painters of the Dutch Masters including works by Frans Hals, Jan Steen, the Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh, The Hall of Honor features a pristine collection of Delft Blue pottery.

IDFA 2019 | Trailer | My Rembrandt
World premiere at IDFA 2019
What makes Rembrandt’s paintings technically so extraordinary, and why are different people so deeply affected by his oeuvre, or a specific work? Centuries after his death, his paintings are still a source of drama and gripping plot twists.
Rembrandt van Rijn: A collection of 546 paintings (HD)
Rembrandt van Rijn: A collection of 546 paintings (HD)
Description: Rembrandt van Rijn, in full Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Rembrandt originally spelled Rembrant (born July 15, 1606, Leiden, Netherlands—died October 4, 1669, Amsterdam) Dutch Baroque painter and printmaker, one of the greatest storytellers in the history of art, possessing an exceptional ability to render people in their various moods and dramatic guises. Rembrandt is also known as a painter of light and shade and as an artist who favoured an uncompromising realism that would lead some critics to claim that he preferred ugliness to beauty.
Early in his career and for some time, Rembrandt painted mainly portraits. Although he continued to paint—and etch and, occasionally, draw—portraits throughout his career, he did so less frequently over time. Roughly one-tenth of his painted and etched oeuvre consists of studies of his own face as well as more-formal self-portraits, a fact that has led to much speculation.
The core of Rembrandt’s oeuvre, however, consists of biblical and—to a much lesser extent—historical, mythological, and allegorical “history pieces,” all of which he painted, etched, or sketched in pen and ink or chalk. Seen over his whole career, the changes in Rembrandt’s style are remarkable. His approach to composition and his rendering of space and light—like his handling of contour, form, and colour, his brushwork, and (in his drawings and etchings) his treatment of line and tone—are subject to gradual (or sometimes abrupt) transformation, even within a single work. The painting known as Night Watch (1640/42) was clearly a turning point in his stylistic development. These changes are not the result of an involuntary evolution; rather they should be seen as documenting a conscious search in pictorial and narrative respects, sometimes in discussion, as it were, with his great predecessors.
Rembrandt quickly achieved renown among Dutch art lovers and an art-buying public for his history paintings and etchings, as well as his portraits and self-portraits. His unusual etchings brought him international fame during his lifetime, and his drawings, which in fact were done as practice exercises or as studies for other works, were also collected by contemporary art lovers.
According to the myth that evolved after his death, Rembrandt died poor and misunderstood. It is true that by the end of his life his realism had been supplanted by Classicism and had become unfashionable in Holland. Nevertheless, his international reputation among connoisseurs and collectors only continued to rise. Certain artists in 18th-century Germany and Venice even adopted his style. He was venerated during the Romantic era and was considered a forerunner of the Romantic movement; from that point he was regarded as one of the greatest figures in art history. In the Netherlands itself, his fortunes have once again risen, and he has become a symbol of both greatness and Dutch-ness.
