Here is our story. It’s our version of a tale as old as the martial arts themselves.
The story begins with a shadowy, unknown figure taking center stage. Timidly, our Cub approaches. At first, he may see the figure as a bully or a thug. Perhaps he may see him as a demon or a possible version of his future self. Either way, our Cub is ill equipped to deal with the figure and is easily thrown to the ground.
Seeing our Cub on the ground the Sensei shoos the bully away and helps him up. The sensei dries the Cub’s tears and leads him into the dojo. Here he gets his first glimpse of the martial arts. He watches as the Sensei’s class trains and at the end of the session they hand our Cub a uniform and welcome him to the family.
After a couple of other classes we see our Cub reappear and join the youth class. The other kids take turns showing him their specialties and help him to begin to learn. As time goes by, demonstrated in classic 80’s style with a montage complete with Eye of the Tiger and the Rocky theme, he moves up to training with the older kids, the ones further along on their martial arts journey. They are able to show him more refined technique and help him improve even more.
Our Cub progresses until the point he is forced to confront his demons again. However, this time he is able to keep his head up and look fear in the eye. Our Cub knows he is strong enough to win the fight and confident enough to know he doesn’t need to.
From here we see our Cub continue on his journey of personal growth. He may stumble along the way, but he gets back up and keeps going. We see him grow from the Cub to a young Lion.
We watch as the young Lion trains side by side with the Sensei. They connect as the full understanding of these ancient techniques flows between them.
The final demonstration of grace, power, and control is during the dance of the breaking boards. Control of the external is shown as the entire body is used to break boards. Then control of the internal is shown as one student lays on a bed of nails while the young Lion breaks a board she is holding.
Our tale ends as the Lion, older now, sees a different young Cub in the same situation he was in. It is now time for him to take on the role of Sensei.
