Imagine Colorado: Activating the Rio Grande Corridor!
Hi, I am Julie Mordecai, director of the Rio Grande Farm Park, a sustainable agricultural park on the banks of the Rio Grande in Alamosa, Colorado.
My great idea is to find place in your community that is central and close to home, somewhere where young people and their families can get to easily by walking or bicycling, and then ensure that it provides a place for children and families to get active and to enjoy their surroundings and nature.
In Alamosa, we have the mighty Rio Grande and it serves as a central corridor connecting Adams State University to the City of Alamosa's Alamosa Ranch, to the Rio Farm Park and eventually the Alamosa Wildlife Refuge. The possibilities to activity and fun are endless!

The Eco-Friendly Goats that Manage The Rio Grande Rail-Trail
Did you know that GOATS play a huge part in managing the Rio Grande Rail-Trail? Well.. they do! From upkeep of invasives, weeds and clutter they also kill the invasives' seeds and fertilize the soil as they go.
The Rio Grande Trail is located along the banks of the Roaring Fork River in Colorado. It spans 42 miles from Glenwood Springs to Aspen, Colorado.
It's a paved bike and multi-use converted rail-trail bed. The forward-thinking, planet-friendly trail manager realized that heavy chemical use wasn't keeping the weeds out and it was really bad for everyone and everything on the trail. Enter the Green Goats! Now goats manage the overgrowth, undergrowth, weeds, invasives and are restoring the trail for all!
Wilderness Voyageurs has two Colorado bike tours that travel along the Rio Grande Trail in Colorado: Cycle Colorful Colorado - easy to intermediate riding, and Kick Some Pass - advanced, get out and stomp on those pedals riding!

Glenwood Canyon. Colorado
Glenwood canyon, Colorado, United States, 2005.
Glenwood Canyon is a rugged scenic 12.5 mi (20 km) canyon on the Colorado River in western Colorado in the United States. Its walls climb as high as 1,300 ft (396 m) above the Colorado River. It is the largest such canyon on the Upper Colorado. The canyon, which has historically provided the routes of railroads and highways through western Colorado, currently furnishes the routes of Interstate 70 and the Central Corridor between Denver and Grand Junction. The canyon stretches from near Dotsero, where the Colorado receives the Eagle River, downstream in a west-southwest direction to just east of Glenwood Springs, on the mouth of the Roaring Fork. Most of the canyon is in Garfield County, with the upper portion near Dotsero lying in Eagle County.
In 1906, the canyon provided the route of the Taylor State Road, a gravel road that was the first route for automobiles through the Colorado Rockies. The canyon also provided the route for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in the late 19th century. Through acquisitions, the line is currently part of the Union Pacific system. As Glenwood Canyon was one of the iconic scenic views along the California Zephyr passenger train, a monument to the dome car design was originally installed in the canyon. In the 1990s the monument was relocated to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden to make way for the construction of Interstate 70.
The canyon is widely considered one of the most scenic natural features on the Interstate Highway System of the United States. Foot access to the canyon is available at four rest areas along Interstate 70 in the canyon. The Hanging Lake Rest Area (Exit 125) provides access to the canyon along a stretch where I-70 is concealed in the Hanging Lake Tunnel.
The canyon was formed relatively recently in Pleistocene time by the rapid cutting of the Colorado down through layers of sedimentary rock. The upper layers of the canyon are sandstone from Pennsylvanian and Mississippian. Sections of the lower canyon walls are made of Cambrian rock. The Mississippian layer that is prominent throughout much of the upper rim sections of the canyon is part of the Leadville Formation.
