South Main Buena Vista, Colorado
Get Your Free Visitor Guide:
South Main is the village that kayaking built. This extraordinary planned multi-use community revolves around the river and outdoors lifestyle. Located just east of Buena Vista beside the Arkansas River, it’s ideally situated to take full advantage of the area’s countless adventures. This environmentally-conscious development exudes an invigorating “live and play” vibe where there are as many pedestrians and bikes as cars.
Homes and independently-owned businesses intertwine along narrow tree-lined cobblestone streets. Boutique shops, art galleries, enchanting lodging and dining all co-exist on a neat footprint of just a few square blocks. South Main is also home to a world class whitewater park that draws kayakers from all over the world.
The village hub and festival-center is The Beach at River Park. From free summer concerts to annual festivals including the Rapids and Grass Beer Festival, this vibrant venue is a true gathering point. From here explore the boulder garden and artsy outdoor living room, too.
Like all extraordinary things, South Main started with a dream. Then the boldness to make it a reality.
The Dream
In the early 2000s, two local siblings, Jed and Katie Selby, envisioned a kayak-centric micro-town to attract fellow adventurers. After searching all over North America for the right property, the perfect spot was found right here. With phenomenal river access and spectacular mountain views, it had endless possibilities. The Selby’s remarkable transformation of this 41.5 parcel into a “New Urbanism” project earned South Main the prestigious Wright Award in 2016, given to Colorado companies that excel in combining lifestyle and commerce.
The Destination
Lodging in South Main recently expanded in an extraordinary way. Now there are two stylishly mountain rustic hotels, the Surf Chateau and the Surf Hotel. Both options are so close to the water that whitewater serenades are guaranteed.
Showcasing an architectural mix of river rock and wood, the 20-room Surf Chateau is enchanting and cozy. It is complemented by its new neighbor, the 42-room Surf Hotel. Nature’s wonders and are in full view from wrap-around balconies. This four-star boutique hotel complex also has an exciting new music and event venue, the Ivy Ballroom. Literally built to rock, the Ivy has two-foot thick walls effectively enhancing a world-class sound system. An immersive ambiance makes for unforgettable intimate live concerts and events. It’s also an incredible destination wedding venue. The Surf Hotel’s gorgeous honeymoon suite and guest rooms conspire to make this the ultimate place to say “I do.”
The hotel’s 100-seat elegantly casual ‘Wesley & Rose’ restaurant features farm-to-table cuisine. Choose cozy indoor dining or riverfront patio seating as well as a private dining room that seats 32. The bar’s cocktails are crafted with hard-to-find specialty liquors and local craft beers on tap. They also serve weekend brunch.
In the main village, don’t miss sampling local craft beer at Eddyline Brewing and Restaurant or enjoy authentic Espresso and Gelato at the Midland Stop. Find unexpected finds and delights on every corner of South Main.
Extreme Colorado whitewater rafting the Numbers Arkansas River 2,400 6-24-2011
800-723-8987 A blue bird day in Buena Vista, Colorado. Just a few clouds to cool you off once in a while. The best place to be in Colorado is on the Arkansas River, rafting some incredible Colorado whitewater rafting the Numbers section of the Arkansas River at 2,400 CFS.
Today was a unique day in the rafting world, rafting on the Arkansas River. The rafting section we call the Numbers opened toady and allowed a few lucky rafters the opportunity raft this incredible stretch of Colorado whitewater. We call it the Numbers because there are too many rapids to name so we numbered them.
The Numbers is a class IV-V section of the Arkansas River located up stream from Buena Vista, Colorado. The Colorado State Parks regulates the whitewater rafting companies on the Arkansas River and all commercial whitewater rafting take part in this Colorado State Park called the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area.
If the water flows of the Arkansas River are above 2,400 CFS in the Numbers section. The Colorado State parks recommends that this section not be run.
Colorado State Parks website quote about rafting the Numbers:
The Numbers: It is recommended that the Numbers (Section 1C) not be run at flows over 2400 CFS at the Numbers/Below Granite guage as read at 7:00 am for full day or morning trips and at 12:00 noon for afternoon Numbers trips.
RIVER RUNNERS REQUIREMENTS CLASS IV - V RAPIDS
Numbers rafting trip in Buena Vista, Colorado on the Arkansas River
Arkansas River flows below 2,400 CFS
Requirements: 16 Years Old
Good physical condition
Rafting experience recommended
It is high water season on the Arkansas River. And the Arkansas River has not peaked yet. Today the water flows of the Arkansas River dropped today. This was due to some maintenance to a dam up stream. The Arkansas River dipped below 2,400 CFS. This allowed this hardy crew of whitewater enthusiasts to take an incredible adventure through some of Colorado's best whitewater rafting.
This crew rafting with River Runners: two boats in the morning, some on a two day overnight rafting trip, who will camp in Browns Canyon overnight and raft out tomorrow. In the afternoon 5 boats will challenge these class V rapids.
The Arkansas River was just below the cut off point to not allow Colorado River Outfitters to commercially run this section. These people go a treat!
The temperatures are hot and are supposed to rise over the next few days. What better way to cool off than go whitewater rafting. I do not think the Numbers will be open tomorrow. But you never know. Make a reservation show up and we will take you rafting on the best whitewater we can offer.
We were rafting the Royal Gorge today from our Royal Gorge Rafting Center in Canon City, Colorado. This is Colorado's best whitewater rafting trip. If the Royal Gorge is not available you will have a blast rafting upstream of the Royal Gorge in Bighorn Sheep Canyon.
Experts expect the upper Arkansas River to peak July 2, 2011 at 5,000 CFS. This is going to make Browns Canyon and Bighorn Sheep Canyon a wild ride. Book your rafting trip today so you do not miss the boat. Try to avoid Saturdays because all the Colorado locals come to Buena Vista and Canon City to raft the Arkansas River.
Enjoy these video clips of some of Colorado's best whitewater rafting. Be sure to call River Runners and book your Colorado whitewater rafting adventure.
River Runners whitewater rafting trips are fun not by accident. There are a lot of people working hard to make this happen. Colorado's whitewater rafting season is fun and short. The Colorado commercial whitewater rafting season only lasts about 100 days each summer. Colorado whitewater rafting is best from May to September. Colorado's high water rafting season is typically fleeting depending on the snow fall of the Rocky Mountains.
This year we go an abundance of snow. This snow is now melting and making incredible Colorado whitewater for all to enjoy.
So book your trip, show up at least 1 hour prior to your whitewater rafting trip departure time. Be nice to the rafting reservationists on the phone. Get a good nights sleep before your rafting trip. Show up happy with a good attitude. Do not psych yourself out. Whitewater rafting is fun. Don't let what you don't know scare you.
Let's go whitewater rafting in Colorado with River Runners.

“PaddleFest is proud to support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chaffee County and the Buena Vista Optimist Club through the success of this 4-day celebration. This is a huge annual event for Chaffee County and it takes great collaboration to pull it off. We have seen a lot of growth in both participation and fundraising having worked with the BGCCC and the Optimist Club last year. Colorado 2017: Estes Park Campground, Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake, Adams Falls
The next few days of our trip, we camped at Estes Park Campground at Mary's Lake. I cannot say enough good things about this campground. The staff are very friendly, the amenities are plentiful, and the place is very clean. We went into Rocky Mountain National Park a few times. Once to Sprague Lake for some awesome photos, and also along Trail Ridge Road to Grand Lake. When we got to Grand lake we ate at a deli called Cy's Deli (excellent food), and then we decided to do a relatively easy hike up to Adam's falls. It was pretty amazing to see the raging waterfalls. Along the way we saw several deer and elk in the area. This was a very fun day on this trip

Colorado River Overnight Raft Trip - August 2014
Overnight rafting trip down the Colorado river--Grand Junction into Utah!
Colorado
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie, and Kate spent a month in the state of Colorado, and they proved that Colorado vacations will give you great memories and some of the most fun your family will ever have. Our family camped all over Colorado, and we saw scenery and wildlife that took our breath away. We hit the Coors Brewery in Golden, the United States Air Force Academy and the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, the United States Mint and Coors Field in Denver, the New Belgium Brewery in Ft Collins, Estes Park just outside Rocky Mountain National Park. We visited Telluride, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Great Sand Dunes National Park, and we went whitewater rafting in Buena Vista. We saw bears and elk and moose, and we rode bikes and hiked and camped in some of the most beautiful places in America. Our CO vacation was fantastic, and yours will be, too. We recommend planning ahead by making reservations to go whitewater rafting Colorado and for the Durango-Silverton Railway, by purchasing tickets to Colorado Rockies or Denver Broncos games, and by visiting colorado.com.
Crestone and Frisco, Colorado Trip
Mt. Harvard (South Slopes)
Mt. Harvard was named in 1869 when Harvard geology professor Josiah Whitney led a surveying expedition into Colorado to investigate rumors of soaring 17,000-foot peaks deep in the Rockies. After crossing Trout Creek Pass, they named the highest summit in sight for the expedition's sponsor: Harvard University.
Mt. Harvard is the third highest peak in Colorado and only one of the three that rise above 14,400 feet. It is the fourth highest in the lower 48 states and the high point of Chaffee County. It is situated 11 miles northwest of Buena Vista and is not easily visible from roads or highways. It hides its mass well. Harvard is often climbed in combination with its neighbor, Mount Columbia. Some choose to do the combination in one long day. Be prepared, it is not a slam dunk. The ridge between the two is 2.2 miles and requires substantial elevation gain and loss. Others seek a high camp in Horn Fork Basin and choose a multi-day outing. Either way, Mount Harvard offers something for everyone.
To access the standard route and the North Cottonwood trailhead begin measuring from the junction of US 24 and Chaffee County 306 in the center of Buena Vista. Drive 0.4 miles north on US 24 to the junction of Chaffee County 350 and turn left (west). Drive 2.1 miles to a T and turn right (north) onto Chaffee County 361. At 2.4 miles the road becomes dirt and angles NW. At 3.0 miles turn sharply south (left) onto Chaffee County 365, which turns west and enters San Isabel National Forest at 5.4 miles. Pass the Harvard Lakes Trailhead at 6.6 miles and continue to the North Cottonwood Trailhead at the end of the road at 8.2 miles and 9,880 feet.
