The Red Taj - Hessing's Tomb : Heritage Tour at Agra Part 10
John Hessing's tomb is located in a Roman Catholic cemetery in Agra and is popularly known as Red Taj or Lal Taj . The tomb is made in red sandstone and is a scaled down replica of the Taj Mahal! Check out this episode to know more interesting stories associated with the place :)
(text from Wikipedia)
John Hessing (November 5, 1739 – July 21, 1803) was a military officer who served in the armies of the Maratha Empire in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Hessing commanded 3000 Maratha regular troops in the Battle of Kardla, where the Maratha armies defeated the Nizam of Hyderabad on March 12, 1795. In June 1801 Hessing commanded four battalions outside Ujjain, which were attacked and defeated by Yashwantrao Holkar, the Maratha ruler of Indore. Hessing fought with the Maratha armies against the British in the Second Anglo-Maratha War. He died in Agra on 21 July 1803 while in command of the Maratha forces there.
Hessing's tomb is located in the Padretola, or Padresanto, a Christian cemetery in Agra:
The tomb of John Hessing, hard by, is a still more splendid edifice, being a copy, in red sandstone, of the famous Taj Mahal, and on a pretty extensive scale too, though far smaller than the original. The tomb, which was completed in or about the year of the British conquest, bears an inscription in good English, setting forth that the deceased colonel was a Dutchman, who died Commandant of Agra, in his 63rd year, 21 July 1803, just before Lake's successful siege of the place.*
Red Taj Mahal (Hessing's Tomb) | Agra Heritage Tour | Ep-4 | पति की याद में बनवाया गया लाल ताज महल
John Hessing's tomb or Red Taj Mahal in Agra is situated inside the premises of a Roman Catholic cemetery and is also known as Agra ka Lal Taj Mahal. This tomb is made up of red sandstone and it bears striking resemblance from Taj Mahal and thus the name 'Red Taj'. This video is based on my recent visit to this Tomb.
A lot of people ask me 'Lal Taj Mahal ke baare mein batao'. So, let me now tell you the history behind the construction of this tomb of Col. John Hessing.
John Hessing (November 5, 1739 – July 21, 1803), a dutch citizen, was a well known military officer who served in the armies of the Maratha Empire in the late 18th as well as early 19th centuries.
After working for a few years in the Army of Madhoji Scindia, in 1792, Scindia even took him along to Pune. After the death of Madhoji Scindia in 1794, Hessing returned back to Agra. In the battle of Kardala, Hessing commanded 3000 Maratha regular troops, in which the Maratha army defeated the Nizam of Hyderabad on March 12, 1795. In 1799, Hessing was given the post of Commander pf the Agra Fort. In June 1801, Hessing was given the responsibility to command four battalions outside Ujjain, which were attacked and defeated by Yashwantrao Holkar, the Indore's Maratha ruler. Hessing fought with the Maratha army against the British in the Second Anglo-Maratha War.
He finally died in Agra on 21 July 1803 while he was in command of the Maratha forces there and unfortunately in the same year Britishers attacked and occupied the Agra fort.
Colonel John Hessing's Tomb was built by his wife and children in his memory. It is built on an 11 feet tall and 58 feet wide platform. There is an undergroud place inside the tomb where the original burials of Hessing can be seen. On the west side of the tomb, an 8 feet long platform can also be seen. Looking at this monument, once can surely say that it is a good example of Indo-Islamic Architecture.
Hessing's tomb(Red Taj) is situated inside the Padretola, or Padresanto, a Christian cemetery in Agra.
The tomb of John Hessing, hard by, is a still more splendid edifice, being a copy, in red sandstone, of the famous Taj Mahal, and on a pretty extensive scale too, though far smaller than the original. Hessings tomb in Agra:The Red Taj'.
The 'guide' in this video mentions three important funeral buildings in Agra: the world famous Taj Mahal of course, completely made of marble, the Itmat-Ud- daullah, often revered to as a jewel case with beautiful inlay work and the Red Taj Mahal, the memorial of Jan Willem Hessing.
If you want to see nearby what a building in (red) Indian sandstone looks like: see the recently opened MAS-Museum in Antwerp.

The holy priest is buried here on this ground , ghost town of India. The tale is said that he can grant any wishes so the king who has built the Taj mahal has walked for 40 km to see this holy man not as a king but as a humble man asking for help so that he could have a son. His wish was granted and he has fallen in love with the land , wanted to stay and spent so much money built the city from nothing to a famous most beautiful palace. Then later the city was abandoned due to the richness of mineral in the water , which is not drinkable and very salty. Now the city is known as The Ghost city.

Zahi Shaked A tour guide in Israel and his camera zahigo25@walla.com +972-54-6905522 tel סיור עם מורה הדרך ומדריך הטיולים צחי שקד 0546905522
My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Houses turn into graveyards as Muslims in this UP village bury the dead at home
Muslim families are being forced to bury their departed in their homes due to lack of a burial ground in some blocks of Agra. As a result, the dead here are a constant part of day-to-day life and their houses have essentially turned into a graveyard. Women cook next to where their children were buried while the elderly rested on cots in a backyard full of graves. Most of the Muslim families here are poor and landless and men scout for work as contract labourers. They said their demand for a graveyard has been ignored for years.

Old Protestant Cemetery, Macao
In 1821, the British East India Company was granted permission by the Portuguese authority in Macao to open a Protestant cemetery in this Catholic colony. There are 192 known burials here, including one modern burial: the ashes of Lindsay Tasman Ride, who dedicated years of his life to the preservation and research of this cemetery. The most famous interment is that of British missionary Robert Morrison, who compiled the first Chinese-English dictionary.
