Porta Nigra - 2000 year old Roman Gate in Germany
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Porta Nigra
The Porta Nigra (Latin for black gate) is a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany. It is today the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps. It is designated as part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The name Porta Nigra originated in the Middle Ages due to the darkened colour of its stone; the original Roman name has not been preserved. Locals commonly refer to the Porta Nigra simply as Porta.

The foundations of the residence of the city's Roman governor (1st - 4th century) were uncovered under the Rathaus (city hall). A visit is like taking an elevator back to Roman times. From the entrance to the Kleine Budengasse, there is also access to an old sewer system, exemplifying the engineering skills of Roman builders. Opening hours: daily except on Monday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The Roman Tower is an excellent example for the Roman fortifications and formed the northwest corner of the Roman Cologne. The northwestern corner tower was build in the first century a.D.. It is also famous for its well-preserved mosaic decoration.
The Römisch-Germanisches Museum gives an impressive account of the history of the Romans along the Rhine. The Roman mosaic with scenes from the world of Dionysos (around 220/230 A.D.) and the reconstructed tomb of the legionary Poblicius (around 40 A.D.) are probably its best known exhibits. Built above the Roman town villa with the world-famous Dionysus mosaic the Römisch-Germanisches Museum houses examples of art, culture and everyday life in Roman and early medieval Cologne

Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium was the Roman colony in the Rhineland from which the German city of Cologne developed.
It was the capital of the Roman province of Germania Inferior and the headquarters of the military in the region. With the administrative reforms under Diocletian, it became the capital of Germania Secunda. Many artifacts from the ancient city survive including the arch of the former city gate with the inscription 'CCAA', which is today housed in the Romano-Germanic Museum.

From our 2016 trip to Europe.
We’ve visited Köln several times but we keep being drawn back, primarily because of the city’s cathedral. The sheer verticality of its exterior is overwhelming. Begun in 1248, it is the largest Gothic church in northern Europe with the 2nd tallest spires of any church in the world. Inside, the 10th c. Gero Cross is the oldest monumental cross north of the Alps. The bones of the Magi (the three wise men who attended Jesus’ birth) are said to be contained in the golden reliquary, its sides adorned with carvings of the apostles and Old Testament prophets. The stained glass in the apse is the oldest in the church (c. 1265) with a stripe of OT scenes on the left juxtaposed with related NT scenes on the right (the close-up in the video shows the birth of Eve and the birth of Mary). The statue of St Christopher (with a youthful Jesus on his shoulder) faces the original entry of the church, where 500 years ago, those who traveled from afar first looked up and took solace in this image of their patron saint.
Near the cathedral is a Roman Gate which was the north entry in the city walls, dating to the 1st century. Down by the river is a lovely park (the Rheingarten) and an area of restaurants where we had a bite to eat and several Kölsch, the town’s distinctive beer served in small glasses that are refilled promptly to keep it cold and effervescent. Other historic sights include the medieval Gross Saint Martin’s Church, the Alter Markt (old market square), and the 15th c. Rathaus (town hall).
The video ends with a series of photos recalling details of our visit.
