EUROPE PREPARE FOR LIVE8
Ahead of Saturday's Live 8 concerts around the world, workers in Rome and Berlin have been building stages and carrying out sound checks to make sure the bid to raise awareness of poverty in Africa goes smoothly.
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to converge on Rome's Circus Maximus and in downtown Berlin for the concerts.
Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are two of the entertainers scheduled to appear on stage in Rome.
The Berlin concert is taking place at a usually-busy downtown roundabout near the Brandenburg Gate, underneath the city's 62-metre (200-foot) Victory Column.
Green Day, Brian Wilson, and Germany's Die Toten Hosen are among about 25 acts scheduled to play Berlin's Live 8.
Both shows are part of a series of free concerts around the world designed to press leaders of the rich G8 countries to help impoverished African nations.
Concerts are also being held in Philadelphia, US; London and Cornwall, UK; Moscow, Russia; Paris, France; Tokyo, Japan; Toronto, Canada; and Johannesburg, South Africa.
Organisers, including British musician Bob Geldof, hope the series of concerts will raise awareness of the 30,000 children dying daily of extreme poverty.
They hope it will galvanise the G8 world leaders, who will be meeting in Scotland, to reduce global poverty, increase aid and make the trade laws fair.
The organisers expect the concerts to attract 100 artists, a million spectators and two billion television viewers.

E lucevan le stelle, from Tosca, by Giacomo Puccini, Alessandro Fantini (tenor), RomeConcerts
From the Christmas concert of 26 December 2019:
Alessandro Fantini tenor, Giovanni Velluti piano.
E lucevan le stelle (And the stars were shining) is a romantic aria from the third act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Tosca, composed in 1900 to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa.
It is sung by Mario Cavaradossi, a painter in love with the singer Tosca, while he waits for his execution on the roof of Castel Sant'Angelo.
Written in B minor, it is one of the most famous opera arias. The vocal range extends from F♯3 to A4. The aria is considered part of the spinto tenor repertoire.
The aria is introduced by a somber clarinet solo. The incipit of the melody (heard in outline earlier in the act, as the sky lightens and the gaoler prepares for the execution) is repeated on the lines O dolci baci, o languide carezze (Oh, sweet kisses and languorous caresses), and also restated in forte in the closing bars of the opera, as Tosca jumps from the ramparts. Jascha Spivakovsky plays Chopin Fantaisie-Impromptu (1955)
A private 1955 recording of Russian-born pianist Jascha Spivakovsky playing Chopin's Fantaisie Impromptu in C-Sharp Minor Op.66. Despite having had a brilliant international career, Spivakovsky never made a single solo commercial recording (he did make some accompanying his famous violinist brother Tossy Spivakovsky). By the time he died in Australia in 1970 at the age of 73 (he had emigrated there in 1933 to escape the Nazis), there were no records of his incredible solo playing for his art to be remembered by.
In 2015, his family began releasing private tapes of the great pianist practicing in his Melbourne home and they have set up a terrific commemorative website at jascha.com . The playing on the two CDs that have been issued is absolutely remarkable, some of the most incredible golden-age pianism that I've heard, with phenomenal clarity of tone and articulation, exquisitely shaped phrasing, marvellous rubato, and a beautiful tonal palette.
The performance here, recorded in a practice session at home in 1955 (when the pianist was 59 years old), features a beautiful rich bass sonority, dazzling fingerwork with crystalline articulation, magnificently sculpted phrasing, and an expansive but natural use of rubato. Spivakovsky's teachers included students of both Franz Liszt and Anton Rubinstein, which instilled in him a particularly clear and insightful Romantic approach to the keyboard.
