Russian Hill, San Francisco
A few of the tourist's favorite streets in Russian Hill including Lombard, with many tourists. Starting off on Hyde Street next to an old and empty reservoir above Bay Street. The car that honks at me as I pass Lombard, just after the start, hadn't read the sign that points out traffic coming up the hill doesn't stop.

San Francisco: Nob Hill
The area was settled in the rapid urbanization happening in the city in the late 19th century. Because of the views and its central position, it became an exclusive enclave of the rich and famous on the west coast who built large mansions in the neighborhood. This included prominent tycoons such as Leland Stanford, founder of Stanford University and other members of The Big Four.
The neighborhood was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire, except for the granite walls surrounding the Stanford, Crocker, Huntington and Hopkins mansions. Those walls remain and you can see black scars caused by smoke from the intense fires that burned after the quake.

Mark Hopkins Mansion, NOB HILL - Palace Hill, San Francisco CA
It was more than 100 years ago that four of San Francisco's most wealthy and powerful railroad and industry magnates had their pick of more than 43 hills on which to build their mansions. Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, Collis Huntington and Leland Stanford selected Nob Hill in the heart of the city for its stunning views of the bay. It eventually became known as the Hill of Palaces because of their palatial mansions. The 1906 earthquake levelled most of the homes, but Nob Hill's grand reputation has carried over to modern times.
