Alaska from Above: Floatplane over Anchorage and Chugach State Park
(open for more info)
We had the chance to take a short ride on a floatplane--another tick on the bucket list--and gained a little perspective (albeit as tourists) on Alaskan bush pilots, who rely upon their planes for survival, whether they're outfitted with wheels, snow skis, or floats. We saw Anchorage from above, gorged ourselves on the views of remote areas of the Chugach mountains, spotting moose and Dall sheep, and appreciated a bird's eye view of low tide and Fire Island and Cook Inlet.

*quoted material
“Aviation touches all aspects of life in Alaska, and is a basic mode of transportation because approximately 90% of Alaska is not served by roads. Alaska has six times as many pilots per capita and 16 times as many aircraft per capita when compared to the rest of the United States. In the state of Alaska, there are fewer than 12,000 miles of paved roads. Aviation is not only the state pastime; it is the state's major form of transportation.”

Rust's Flying Service Flightseeing - Lake Hood High-Speed (Step) Taxi
Rust's Flying Service in Anchorage hosted a summer tourist season kick-off event at their Lake Hood hangar to get tourism employees in the spirit for the hordes of visitors that come up for three months every year.
After I enjoyed crab cakes from CIRI, spinach dip from the Alaska Railroad, wraps from Costco, and ice cream from Tastee Freez, I joined the long line of people waiting for a free 15-minute flightseeing tour on a Cessna 206 floatplane from Rust's Flying Service. It was a quick trip, but the views of Anchorage, Cook Inlet, and the Chugach Mountains were amazing! And despite living in Anchorage for almost 16 years, I had never been on a floatplane. I was very surprised how smooth the takeoff and landing were--I was expecting a lot more drag from the water, but our expert pilot Henry kept the perfect amount of thrust upon landing to keep us from pitching forward. Taking off and landing a floatplane is a completely different experience than doing the same in a wheeled aircraft!
This video shows the high-speed taxi from Rust's hangar/dock over to the start of the runway near the Millennium Hotel.

My Experience Flying in an Alaskan Float Plane
Prior to my recent trip to Alaska, I had never been in a float plane. I don't think many people have but in Alaska, it is common mode of transportation. Because the terrain is so rugged, often times float plane is one of the only ways to get somewhere. My family chartered a flight with Rusts Flying Service to get a truly Alaskan experience. Hop inside the plane with me to see what the in-flight viewing is like!

The Gorge - Anchorage AK - Knik Glacier Flying
The Knik Glacier is located just 50 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska on the northern end of the Chugach Mountains. The ice field averages over 25 miles long and over 5 miles across making it one of the largest glaciers in southcentral Alaska. Knik Glacier feeds the 25 mile long Knik River which empties into the Knik Arm section of the Cook Inlet. The first part of this video, down low over the water, is known to local pilots as the gorge. Enjoy the view. I sure did.
