Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine & Akiba Shrine and Kyoujin-isi, Takayama, Japan, 2019
The origins of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine date from the time of the Emperor Nintoku (413 - 439), when he requested Prince Takefurukuma-no-mikoto to subjugate the monster Ryoumen Sukuna, an incredible beast with 2 heads, 4 arms and 4 legs.
Before undertaking his task, the warrior enshrined his father, the Emperor Ojin as the deity of this sanctuary, and prayed for the success of his mission.
In 1683, through the benefaction of Lord Kanamori, the shrine was enlarged and offcially established for the protection of the town.

Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine
Sakurayama Hachiman-gû, Takayama, japan, 高山 | Canon 80D | Virtual Trip
The Shinto Shrine Sakurayama Hachiman-gû is located north of Takayama City in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The origin of this temple dates back to legend in the fifth century. From the seventeenth century, it took its current form and became an important sanctuary of the city. Apparently Hachiman-gû is visited by about 1.5 million people every year. This temple seems unmissable especially for the visit of its two museums, one of which contains copies of the tanks used for matsuri, the famous festivals of Takayama, among the most beautiful and famous of Japan. The temple is about 20 minutes walk from the train station, exactly 1.3km.
A little away from the historic district and the center of the city, the visit is all the more pleasant since despite statistics and once past the old city, there are more people once there. The sanctuary consists of two museums, some temples and wooden structures. A small Shinto shrine is also higher up the hillside at the end of a long staircase. A large torii gate indicates the entrance to the temple and the whole is quite nice, without being exceptional either.

Takayama - Hachimangu Shrine and Yatai Kaikan
Day 26 - Hachimangu Shrine and Yatai Kaikan
We started off the day by visiting the two morning markets. I was somewhat disappointed that the morning markets were so small and not many things were being sold (I suppose it's because it was the middle of winter), but it was still interesting. Our main aim anyway was Yatai Kaikan.
One of the biggest things Takayama is known for is the Takayama festival, where big floats (Yatai) are paraded through the streets. Yatai Kaikan is a museum that showcases some of these floats during the off season. Not all floats are shown here though. Most are stored in various locations throughout Takayama behind big white doors.
Near Yatai Kaikan is Hachimangu Shrine. It is a nice shrine, though nothing really stands out from it.

The origins of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine date from the time of the Emperor Nintoku (413 - 439), when he reguested Prince Takefurukuma-no-mikoto to subjugate the monster Ryoumen Sukuna, an incredible beast with 2 heads, 4 arms and 4 legs.

In 1683, through the benefaction of Lord Kanamori, the shirine was enlarged and offcially established for the protection of the town.
More than 1,500,000 people vist the shirine annually. The Takayama Matsuri (Festival) is regarded as one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan. (along with Chichibu Matsuri in Saitama Prefecture and the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto.)
The focus of the festival is the magnificent floats which are pulled through the strees of the town.
The Takayama Matsuri actually composed of two festivals: the Spring Festival (April 14th and 15th), in which 12 floats take part, and the Autumn Festival (October 9th and 10th) which features 11 floats. The Takayama Festival began about 350 years ago as a simple village ceremony. Since Takayama is in Hida, the center of Japan’s timber producing region, the town grew as an important distribution center for the area, attracting large numbers of sake brewrers, cloth merchants, woodworkers, and other craftsmen. As the result of these rich merchants’ support, and the pride in the high quality work of the artisans, the floats beccame more and more magnificent, as a result of competition developed among the various districts of the town.
