Salzach River Cruise Is A High Class Modern Boat Trip In Salzburg
Fondly called the ‘Amadeus Salzburg’, the Salzach river boat is a highly modern panorama transport boat allowing you full eye maximum scope of the beautiful town Salzburg. The illustrious musician Mozart’s full name is ‘Wolfgangg Amadeus Mozart’ and you can know where the boat has acquired it’s name from. Historically the river was used to transport salt from nearby countries into the city, especially from Germany one thinks, as the name ‘Salz’ means ‘Salt’ in German. The boating ‘Passenger service’ already had started a century ago itself, but the boats were very slow and the waters didn’t support cruising much. Hence it was abandoned. But 100 years laters, back in 2002, boat cruising was restarted and now it’s a memorable tourist experience in Austria tour.
The Salzach boat cruise, ‘Salzach Schiffahrt’ offers many tours to choose from. You will be amazed at the places you can visit during the tour. Firstly you can have a visit to the Hellbrunn Palace and have a great look at it, then you have your normal evening cruise with your partner or friends. These give you stunning panorama view of the city Salzburg due to it’s big windows. You just wouldn’t believe you could view the city like this. However the icing on the cake is really the tour which encompasses the earlier tour along with a visit to the Salzburg Fortress and check out concerts high above. A top up is the roof top candle light dinner. This shouldn’t be missed if you can afford it. But take our advice and just do it.
‘Amadeus Salzburg’ is a sophisticated water transport boat with a capacity of 60 to 70 passengers and is very active during the months from April to October, November. Travel experts and we at Vihari highly recommend this cruise tour if you’re visiting Austria and Salzburg for the first time. Of course it still gives you the thrills and chills even if you go there a second or third time.

Episode29 - Salzach River Cruise.m4v
We are waiting for the departure of the Salzach cruise boat which will take us on a journey down the Salzach River which separates Salzburg into an old town and a new town.
The boat departs from just below the old Makartsteg bridge. Salzburg's river is called the salt river or Salzach. This isn't because it's salty, but because of the precious cargo of salt it once carried from the salt mines of Hallein, just nine miles upstream. We'll be visiting the Hallein salt mines later. Salt could be transported from here all the way to the Danube, and on to the Mediterranean via the Black Sea.
As we scan the cityscape passing by us, we see a lot of churches. Salzburg was nicknamed the Rome of the North because of its 38 Catholic churches, plus two Protestant and one synagogue.
There are five streams which gush into the Salzach. These date from the 13th century, when the river was split into five canals running through the town to power its mills.

Boat Amadeus Salzburg Capsizes In The Salzach River
The tourist riverboat Amadeus Salzburg sank in the Salzach River during the flood of the century in August 2002.
The repaired Amadeus Salzburg is one of the many tourist attractions in Salzburg:
The Salzach River is going to be 'repaired' as well: not only to save endangered species of the river and its floodplains like the Salzachau, but also to prevent the municipalities in a natural way from being flooded in the future: + +

Cruise on Salzach
The Salzach is the river that passes through Salzburg and one can enjoy a cruise along it to get a completely different perspective of the town. The river boats are especially built for the shallow river and are quite powerful - one returns at speed and at the end of the cruise the boat does a waltz on the river!
The boats leave from the centre of town and are very well subscribed and one probably needs to book an hour or so before departure. Unfortunately there are no toilets on board but there is a bar. The trip is included within the Salzburg Card.

Salzach river flows through Salzburg city in Austria
The city of Salzburg is situated by the river Salzach, a river that runs across the entire province in a bended curve and shapes the landscape of it. The Salzach is 225 kilometres long and one of the most important rivers of the Austrian Alps. By international visitors, it is often incorrectly referred to as Salzburg River.
This is probably due to the similarity in the names. In fact, Salz means salt and Ache is an old German term for a river. The name therefore refers to the importance that the Salzach had as a transportation route for salt from Hallein and other mining places of the province up to the late 18th century.
