VENICE: EXPLORING the historic CEMETERY of SAN MICHELE ⚱️✝️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the island of San Michele, located in the lagoon close to Venice, and which has been the city's cemetery (cimitero) since the early nineteenth century. As Venice is an island community, it's not really surprising that its graveyard is also an island, although the notion may seem odd at first. Formerly two islands, which are now joined together, the Isola di San Michele (St. Michael) is dedicated to the dead, and is occupied only by churches and by long ranks of tombs.
Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals – including the Grand Canal thoroughfare – lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs.
Italy, a European country with a long Mediterranean coastline, has left a powerful mark on Western culture and cuisine. Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David and Brunelleschi's Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.

San Michele is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, northern Italy. It is associated with the sestiere of Cannaregio, from which it lies a short distance northeast. Along with neighbouring San Cristoforo della Pace, the island was a popular place for local travellers and fishermen to land. Mauro Codussi's Chiesa di San Michele in Isola of 1469, the first Renaissance church in Venice, and a monastery lie on the island, which also served for a time as a prison.
San Cristoforo was selected to become a cemetery in 1807, designed by Gian Antonio Selva, when under French occupation it was decreed that burial on the mainland (or on the main Venetian islands) was unsanitary. The canal that separated the two islands was filled in during 1836, and subsequently the larger island became known as San Michele. Bodies were carried to the island on special funeral gondolas. Among those buried there are Igor Stravinsky, Joseph Brodsky, Jean Schlumberger, Christian Doppler, Frederick Rolfe, Horatio Brown, Sergei Diaghilev, Ezra Pound, Luigi Nono, Catherine Bagration, Franco Basaglia, Paolo Cadorin, Zoran Mušič, Helenio Herrera, Emilio Vedova, and Salvador de Iturbide y Marzán. The cemetery is still in use today.
The cemetery contains 7 war graves from World War I of officers and seamen of the British merchant and Royal Navy. Aspasia Manos was initially interred at the cemetery of Isola di San Michele. Her remains were later transferred to the Royal Cemetery Plot in the park of Tatoi Palace. Other attractions include the Cappella Emiliana chapel.

ISOLA DI SAN MICHELE - VENEZIA

Venice, San Michele cemetery, Italy
San Michele - one of many islands in the Venetian lagune - is Venice's cemetery since the early 1800s, when Napoleon's occupying forces told the Venetians to start hauling their dead across the water instead of burying them all over town.
Bodies were carried to the island on special funeral gondolas, including Igor Stravinsky, Joseph Brodsky, Jean Schlumberger, Sergei Diaghilev, Ezra Pound, Luigi Nono, Franco Basaglia and Zoran Mušič. Other attractions include the Cappella Emiliana chapel. The cemetery is still in use today.

San Michele Cemetery, Venice, Veneto, Italy, Europe
The cemetery of San Michele is located in the homonymous island in the Venetian Lagoon, located between Venice and Murano. San Michele actually hosted the cemetery only since 1837 when it was buried the narrow channel that distinguished the two islands of St. Michael and St. Christopher Peace to expand the extension of the cemetery that, since 1807 on the orders of Napoleon stood on quests 'last. Previously the burials were made in churchyards or inside churches, and when these were filled, the remains were transferred to the lagoon islands (known especially Ossuary Sant'Ariano). The habit of clearing so the cemeteries was maintained until the nineteenth century. Depending on the religion or confession, the cemetery is divided into areas Catholic, Orthodox and Evangelical. The Jewish cemetery in Venice, however, is on the island of Lido.
