Road Trip to Sandia Crest
Take an approximately 13.5 mile ride with us on NM 536 (Sandia Crest Scenic Byway) from The Turquoise Trail (Hwy 14) to the Sandia Crest/Peak. This road is listed on dangerousroads.org as one of the most spectacular roads in the U.S.
It is also one of the highest roads in New Mexico with a peak elevation of 10,678 ft. You gain about 3800 feet in elevation from beginning to end on this road.
Many motorcyclists and bicycle enthusiasts love this road. I am not so ambitious, our trip was in a Toyota 4Runner.
There are many hiking and mountain biking trails along the way as well as beautiful areas to have a picnic.
If you like hikes, you can join us on one of my other videos which features our hike on the Sandia Crest Trail. Be sure to also check out some of my other scenic drives around New Mexico too.

Sandia Crest Ride, NM
A ride through Turquoise Trail and up to Sandia Crest, NM. About 75F at the bottom, 32F at the top. Nice road with many sharp turns, but one must be careful with all the rock salt and gravel on the road. No music, just wind noise... ;)

NM True TV - Sandia Tram
New Mexico is packed with Instagram-worthy views, but certainly among the best comes suspended from a cable near the Sandia Mountains crest. The Tram is a favorite among locals and visitors, offering a 20-minute ride to a visitor center and restaurant overlooking Albuquerque from just shy of 11,000 feet. Try to stay through sunset. #NewMexicoTRUE

Feel the Light, Entering the Mountains in New Mexico
The mountain views and driving through them on the way to Rancho de Taos, New Mexico with my best friend, Miss Molly was magical. And I could tell she felt the enchantment that the state brought. After all it is The Land Of Enchantment. Enjoy this little clip of her experiencing the beauty from our road trip last month. : )

Tunnel Spring 4wd Road - Placitas, New Mexico
For the full 4wd trail guide please visit:
Nestled in the north end of the Sandia Mountain Wilderness is the 1.5-mile Forest Service Road 231, leading to Tunnel Spring and some of the area's best hiking and most spectacular views. Just a short 20 minutes north of Albuquerque, this trail up to Tunnel Spring and various hiking trailheads is an easily accessible getaway from the stresses of urban life.
The Sandia Mountains are the most visited in New Mexico, with about half of the state's population living within an hour's drive. Tunnel Springs Road/FR231 is one of only three trails in the area that is authorized for use by offroad vehicles. The parking area at the end of FR231 provides access to the Crest Trail - approximately 26.5 miles of hiking trail running along the ridge of the Sandias and up to the crest. The Forest Service maintains an additional 117 miles worth of hiking trails in the Sandia Wilderness.
Sandía means watermelon in Spanish, and a popular belief is that the name is a reference to the reddish hue of the range's granite escarpments at sunset. The granite of the Sandias is topped in many areas with a layer of limestone, rich in marine fossils. Wildlife in the area includes mule deer, black bears, squirrels, and bobcats as well as golden eagles, various species of hawks and roadrunners. The people of Sandia Pueblo, who are Tiwa speakers, consider the mountains sacred and refer to the range as Bien Mur, big mountain.

Backpacking The Manzano Mountain Wilderness
The Manzano Mountain Wilderness, created by the Endangered American Wilderness Act of 1978, encompasses 36,970 acres on the Mountainair Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest in central New Mexico. The word manzano is Spanish for apple. In the 1700s, explorers visiting a small village on the eastern edge of the mountains noted apple trees growing in the village. The trees appeared to be very old but no one knew or how or when they arrived; apple trees are not native to this country. The village and the mountain both became known as Manzano.
Elevations in the Wilderness range from 6,000 feet in the foothills to 10,098 feet on Manzano Peak. A rule of thumb to remember about climate and elevation is that every 1,000 feet gained in elevation is the same as traveling 400 miles north. You start out in the desert of central New Mexico and end up in the spruce-fir forests of lower Canada. (...so to speak.)

The right way to leave a free campsite - no trace - Kaibab National Forest - LeAw in the USA //Ep.46
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 46th episode, after visiting the Grand Canyon National Park we boondock at a BLM free campsite just outside the Park in Kaibab National Forest. When we woke up we decided to do this video. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
At 1.6 million acres (650,000 ha) the Kaibab National Forest borders both the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon, in north-central Arizona. It is divided into three major sections: the North Kaibab Ranger District (offices in Fredonia) and the South Kaibab and are managed by the United States Forest Service. The South Kaibab is further divided into two districts, the Tusayan Ranger District (offices in Grand Canyon), and the Williams Ranger District (offices in Williams). The Grand Canyon is a natural boundary between the North Kaibab and the South Kaibab. The South Kaibab covers 1,422 square miles (3,680 km2) and the North Kaibab stretches over 1,010 square miles (2,600 km2). Elevations vary on the forest from 5,500 feet (1,676 m) in the southwest corner to 10,418 feet (3,175 m) at the summit of Kendrick Peak on the Williams Ranger District. The forest as a whole is headquartered in Williams.
