The Cemetery of Soviet Soldiers - Sandomierz, Poland
During a trip to Sandomierz I visited the Cemetery of Soviet Soldiers. I found out that the town played a significant role in the final stages of WW2.
Sources and further information:
Sandomierz, Poland Cemetery
Video and pictures I took of the Sandomierz, Poland cemetery, with narration. I discuss the difference between Polish and American cemeteries. I also talk about a Polish holiday called Święto Zmarłych (Day of the Dead), which is celebrated in honor of the deceased in Poland. It is a national Catholic holiday.

The tragedy of the Jews of Klimontów
Klimontów is a village in south eastern Poland, around 29km to the west of Sandomierz. In 1914 the population was over 6,000 people, well over half of which were Jewish, today there are less than 2,000 people here. In this video essay I discuss the Jewish population in the interwar period and what happened during the Nazi German occupation.

T - 34/85 Tanks - Soviet Soldiers Cemetery Sandomierz Poland - upscaled...
This war cemetery contains the graves of about 12.000 Soviet soldiers and officers who fell in the fighting for the Sandomierz bridgehead in 1944. Among the victims is the commander of the 1180th Rifle Regiment (350th Infantry Division), Colonel W. F. Skopenko. The entrance of the cemetery is being 'guarded' by two T-34/85 tanks.

The 2nd Most Important City in Poland
I took a short trip to Krakow, the second most important city in Poland on my way to Lviv in Ukraine. I wasn't planning on going to Krakow, but because of flights to Kyiv selling out, I had to find another way to get there, and what better way than to go to another country for a couple of days?
I had never been to Krakow, and hadn't actually heard much about it apart from it's a place where stag do's go to get really drunk, and also people go to make it a base to visit Auschwitz. I wasn't planning on doing either, so I didn't really know what I was going to do.
I ended up walking into the centre of Krakow, wandering around for a bit and checking some stuff out and then heading over to the Jewish Quarter known as Kazimierz, which is a nice area.
I usually take some shots of churches on my trips, and Poland was no different as there were many churches in Krakow, but this time I got to check out some Synagogues in the Jewish part of Krakow which was nice to see.
I enjoyed walking around Krakow in winter time, wandering through the Christmas markets, trying kielbasa from a street vendor, but it was very cold - but not as cold as I was going to be the next day when I arrived in Lviv in Ukraine - god was that a cold place.
The accommodation I chose to stay in whilst in Krakow was pretty good - it was a studio apartment right next to the city centre, but not too close that I could hear everything. The one downside to the apartment was the bed - I had two bad sleeps in that attempt of a bed.
Anyway, enjoy my video from Krakow, the second most important city in Poland. Krakow used to be the capital until about 1600 when it changed to Warsaw.

Lvov-Sandomierz Offensive
It is hard to believe now that in the summer of 1944 fierce combat raged in western Ukraine/southeast Poland during the Lvov-Sandomierz offensive in July-August, 1944. Although it was a critical operation of the Second World War, it is hardly known about in the west today.
The combat took place in the rural countryside of Eastern Europe, which today is peaceful and quiet with little to no reminder of what happened in 1944.
The song is an old Polish folk song from the Carpathian region of southern Poland, which is not too far from where this combat took place.
POLAND: POPE FALLS AND CUTS HEAD
English/Nat
Pope John Paul II fell and cut his head on Saturday before leaving Warsaw for an open-air Mass, requiring three stitches on his right temple.
The pope's accident could have brought a halt to his tour of Poland but the pontiff arrived on time for the Mass in the southeastern city of Sandomierz with a bandage visible just below his skullcap.
A pilgrimage far from the Vatican, a packed schedule and hundreds of thousands of faithful eagerly awaiting Pope John Paul II.
The pope's fall on Saturday, as he was preparing to leave Warsaw, bore the potential for a medical and planning emergency, but it is a risk the Vatican takes to meet John Paul's desire to keep on the road.
The Pope greeted officials as he climbed unaided from his helicopter, and appeared to be coping well when he first arrived in the city of Sandomierz.
Thousand of people pressed to get close to him as he went through the streets in his pope mobile.
The only time the pope appeared more fragile than usual was when he had trouble climbing the stairs to his chair and was helped by two aides.
But he sounded strong and did not appear to be in pain.
The accident came after the most rigorous day of his Poland pilgrimage.
On Friday he attended an early morning Mass followed by five speeches - including an address to parliament - reception lines and prayers at two memorials.
According to Joachim Navarro-Valls, a Vatican spokesman, the pope slipped accidentally and his head hit the ground while he was leaving the papal nuncio's residence in Warsaw around 8 a.m. local time (0600 GMT).
He said he did not know what had caused the pope to fall.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
This morning before leaving his residence of the papal nuncio in Warsaw, the holy father slipped accidentally and procured a slight cut in the right hand of his forehead that was treated with three stitches. There were no variations at all in his biological parameters, blood pressure or weight or whatever, and the programme of the trip continues as planned for those days still remaining in Poland.
SUPER CAPTION: Joachim Navarro-Valls, Vatican Spokesman
The pope himself made no reference to the accident.
He did not appear to have been greatly shaken by the incident although he has been in ill health in recent years.
He arrived in his native Poland on June 5th and is scheduled in for a 13-day pilgrimage.

Klimontów, an unknown treasure in Poland, by motorhome
Klimontów is a village in the Świętokrzyskie province, in south-east Poland approximately 22 kilometres west of Sandomierz. Today the village has a population of 2,000 which is three times fewer than it was at the beginning of World War Two. . Although small, it has a number of places worth seeing including the seventeenth century church which can be seen for kilometres around, the seventeenth century abbey and neo-classicistic synagogue which was completed in 1854.
Klimontów was the birthplace of the poet Bruno Jasieńsk and a festival named after Jasieński was held in the summer although this pracitice has now stopped. Jasienski left Klimontów when a child. He went on to be the bete noire of the Polish futurist movement, living in Paris before leaving for the USSR where he lived in Leningrad and then Moscow. Although he knew several people within the Soviet ruling class, he was still judicially murdered in 1938 for being Polish.
Klimontów suffered from WW1 when it was captured by the Austrians before being recaptured by the Russians and once more taken by the Austrians in 1914 and 1915.
There are plenty of places to park one's vehicle, as can be seen in the photographs, I put mine directly in front of the seventeenth century church!
