LISBON: Santa Justa Lift - viewpoint (Portugal)
Elevador de Santa Justa, also called Elevador do Carmo, is an elevator, or lift, in Lisbon/Lisboa, Portugal.
Situated at the end of Rua de Santa Justa, it connects the lower streets of the Baixa with the higher Largo do Carmo (Carmo Square).
The elevator is a vertical structure, developed along the Rua de Santa Justa, consisting of a metal tower, observation platform, walkway and base. The lift is decorated in a Neo-Gothic style in iron.
With a height of 45 metres, covering seven stories, the tower includes two elevator cabins, decorated in wood, mirrors and windows, originally with a capacity for 24 passengers in each, and later updated to 29 people.
Since its construction, the lift has become a tourist attraction for Lisbon.

Situated at the end of Rua de Santa Justa, it connects the lower streets of the Baixa with the higher Largo do Carmo (Carmo Square).
Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city. From imposing São Jorge Castle, the view encompasses the old city’s pastel-colored buildings, Tagus Estuary and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge. Nearby, the National Azulejo Museum displays 5 centuries of decorative ceramic tiles. Just outside Lisbon is a string of Atlantic beaches, from Cascais to Estoril.

Here's a tip which is going to save you a lot of money visiting the Santa Justa Lift. Use a Lisbon Transportation card (for example Viva Viagem) to pay for your ride up because you if you buy a ticket at the elevator they charge you for a RT ride AND for the terrace, which is pricey. And if you go early before the terrace opens you might be able to visit it for free.

Lisbon Funiculars and the St. Justa Lift 1997
Lisbon is built on seven hills, in order to reach higher parts the city there are three funicular railways and a vertical lift. This video briefly shows the operation of elevadors Gloria, Bica and Lavra as well as the spectacular elevador Santa Justa giving views overlooking Baixa district. In 1997, when these videos were shot, there was only a small quantity of graffiti visible. Sadly much of the rolling stock is blighted with this vandalism now.

O ELEVADOR DE SANTA JUSTA (ou Elevador do Carmo) liga a rua do Ouro à rua do Carmo, em Lisboa. Trata-se de uma estrutura de ferro fundido, enriquecido com trabalhos em filigrana, da autoria do arquiteto Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard. A sua construção ter-se-á iniciado em 1898 e a inauguração ocorreu a 10 de julho de 1902, estando assim com a bonita idade de 111 anos. A diferença de nível entre o piso da estação inferior e o da superior é de 30 metros. Foi considerada uma obra arrojada à época, atendendo ao desnível vencido, aos materiais utilizados e aos viadutos construídos, que possibilitaram os acessos à estação superior no Largo do Carmo. Atualmente é uma das estruturas mais visitadas por turistas. Do alto da torre, acedido por uma estreita escada em caracol, o visitante tem esplêndidas vistas sobre o Rossio, a Baixa de Lisboa, o Castelo de São Jorge na colina oposta, o rio Tejo e as ruínas da Igreja do Convento do Carmo. Em 2002 foi classificado como Monumento Nacional.
THE SANTA JUSTA LIFT (or Carmo Lift) connects Golden street with Carmo street, in Lisbon (Portugal). It is a cast iron structure, enriched with filigree, designed by architect Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard. Its construction will have started in 1898 and the inauguration took place at July 10, 1902, so it is the pretty age of 111 years. Between the bottom level and upper station there are 30 meters. This was considered a daring work at the time, given the gap overcome, the materials used and the overpasses built, which allowed access to the upper station in Largo do Carmo. It is currently one of the structures most visited by tourists. From the tower, accessed by a narrow spiral staircase, the visitor has splendid views over the Rossio, the Low City, the Castle of S. Jorge on the opposite hill, the Tagus river and the ruins of the Church of the Convento do Carmo. In 2002 it was classified as a National Monument.
