Action News On The Road - Central New York
We're on the road in Central New York at Fort Stanwix which is known as the fort that never surrendered.
Fort Stanwix is one of the only forts in the 13 original states that never surrendered, when attacked throughout the American Revolutionary War. It stands in the heart of downtown Rome, NY and is part of the National Park Service. It was rebuilt using the plans from the original fort which was built in 1758 to guard a strategic port along a major transportation route. It's a great place to bring the family and step back in time and admission is free.
We are a kid friendly and family friendly fort, said Park Ranger for Interpretation, Dan Umstead. When parents come in and they say to their kids don't touch I say no, no we want you to touch. We want you to experience and really get a sense of what it was like to live here.
Fort Stanwix gets visitors from all over the United States as well as international visitors.
It's also very educational I think for children, all the rooms that you can go in and I think especially for children you can touch everything. That's great I guess, said international tourists from the Netherlands.
The fort is open 7 days a week and there are two tours daily. Also coming up the last Saturday in July is Honor America Day, which will feature a free outdoor summer concert and fireworks.
Another great place to visit in Central New York is Turning Stone Resort and Casino, which is celebrating it's 20th Anniversary. It's more than just gaming...
Turning Stone is also world renowned for their golfing. In fact most recently the Shenandoah was named one of the top 50 golf courses for women by Golf Digest.
And at Turning Stone there's no excuse to get rusty over the winter.
The golf dome is the central New York home for winter golf. It features 40 hitting stations, two golf simulators a great short game area and the golf super store, said Miles Blundell, Director of Golf Operations at Turning Stone.
If you're looking for a taste of luxury stop into the spa SKANA at Turning Stone. The spa combines modern amenities with ancient American Indian healing traditions to create the world's most luxuriously unique spa experience. Treatments focus on the use of herbal and mineral wraps, warm stone therapy and reviving soaks to restore balance and harmony to the body, mind and spirit. And if that wasn't enough you can tantalize your taste buds at any one of the 21 distinct dining venues on site. From fine dining at Wildflowers or just a quick snack, you're sure to find something to satisfy your appetite. Whether it's a day trip or you're planning a longer stay, Turning Stone is a great place to get-a-way.
Our next stop On the Road is to Destiny USA formerly known as the Carousel Center in Syracuse, NY.
With over 2.4 million square feet Destiny USA is the largest shopping center in New York State but there is to do there than just shop.
Destiny USA is brand new, opened a 1.3 million square foot expansion that offers a whole new dynamic experience, said Sara Wallace, Director of Communications for Destiny USA. It integrates entertainment, dining, outlets and traditional retail added onto the more than 100 already existing retailers that we already have. So it's an entirely new experience for everyone that visits.
Visitors can try their hand at racing an Italian-made specialty go-kart or see a first run 3D moving in a stadium seating IMAX theatre or catch a comedy show.
And if you're looking for mind-blowing entertainment visit WonderWorks a scientific amusement park for the brain.
We have a roller coaster in there, we have a 4D theater, we have an astronaut trainer, we have a hurricane shack. We have things for kids to do, we have got a great bubble lab. We have a little bit of fun for everybody, said Todd Buchko, general manager of Wonderworks at Destiny USA.
And of course there is the Canyon Climb Adventure the world's largest indoor ropes course. The only one of it's kind suspended from the ceiling. There are also many new dining options.
We integrated new sit down dining in our entertainment area, Wallace said. It includes the Melting Pot, Cantina Laredo, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurants and PF Changs. They each offer a very different experience and a very different type of food.
Destiny USA is the 6th largest shopping mall in the United States and it's the largest LEED Gold Certified retail commercial building in the country. It's also the 2nd most visited shopping center in the country with 29 million visits, only second to the Mall of America.

Urban youth and nature | Yusuf Burgess
Urban youth and nature: Changing lives, transforming communities!
The amount of time young people spend in the outdoors has decreased significantly, research shows. This human cost of alienation affects not only youth, but it also shapes adults, families and communities. Never before has this been so true as for youth living in poverty and in dense urban communities.
How do we reverse these trends and provide meaningful connections that last a lifetime? In this presentation Brother Yusuf addresses disparities and provides critical insights into the importance of reconnecting urban youth with our natural environment.
