ITALY, Sardinia (4K) - Alghero Old Town, Grotte di Nettun, Capo Caccia
#ITALY #MEDITERRANEAN #TRAVEL #SEA
Alghero is a town of approximately 40000 inhabitants, located in the Province of Sassari, on the island of Sardinia in Italy. The inhabitants of this city speak an old dialect of the Catalan language as a result of the Catalan conquest. Subsequently, the official language was changed to Spanish and later to Italian. Yet more than half of the inhabitants speak the ancient Catalan dialect.
Alghero was founded in 1102 by the Genoese family of Doria as a fortified port. This family led the city with a small interruption between 1283-1284 when it was ruled by the Pisano family. In 1353 Alghero was captured by Aragon.
This period was followed by the domination of Spain until 1702. In 1720 Alghero and the whole island of Sardinia were part of Piedmont under the direction of the Savoya family. In the year of Italian unification in 1860, the king of Sardinia became the king of Italy.
Grotte di Nettuno - Neptune's cemetery is a stalactite cave near the town of Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy. The cave was discovered by local fishermen in the eighteenth century and has since developed into a popular tourist attraction. The cave is called from the Roman god of the sea, Neptune.
Capo Caccia owes its name to the pigeon hunts that nineteenth-century notables made out of the boat during periods of calm around the promontory, from where you can see the Alghero Bay and the nearby Foradada Island which is one of the the most beautiful and evocative views of the island. It is possible to observe along all the rocks the Eagle of Bonelli, the Perennial Falcon, the Gull and the Corsican, the Petrel and the Eagle. Lately, it has been declared a permanent oasis of wildlife protection, largely benefiting from the various species present both above and under water. Currently, the Marine Protected Marine Reserve Marine Capo Caccia - Isola Piana, the Marine Reserve, and the Porto Conte Park, a land-based regional park with unique fauna and flora, such as the impressive Griffon.

The cave was discovered by local fishermen in the 18th century and has since developed into a popular tourist attraction. The grotto gets its name from the Roman god of the sea, Neptune. The entrance to the grotto lies only around a metre above the sea level at the foot of the 110-metre-high Capo Caccia cliffs and the cave can therefore only be visited when the waters below are calm. A stairway cut into the cliff in 1954, the 654-step escala del cabirol (goat's steps), leads from a car park at the top of the cliff down to the entrance
