English (für Deutsch siehe unten):
Mastino I della Scala of Verona starts to build the castle in Sirmione in 1277/78 to gain more control over the region of south lake garda. Venecia annected Sirmione in 1405, which most likely resulted in the harbour fortifications, which are influenced by the arsenal in Venetia.
We were so impressed by these mediaval walls, towers, battlements, baileys and drawbridges, that we decided to present them in a small video. We just put some italien classic music below the natural atmosphere and put all comments and information into closed caption: Like this, they can be translated, corrected, extended and there is no need for an annoying voice in the audio track... Enjoy!

Deutsch:

Travel Italy - Visiting Sirmione Castle
Take a tour of Sirmione Castle in Italy -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Sirmione Castle sits on a spit jutting out into the waters of Lake Garda, on the shore of an Italian commune of the same name.
The castle was built in the thirteenth century and displays many elements from the High Middle Ages, including crenellated walls and towers.
A highly visited feature of this structure visit is the main tower from which the lake and castle courtyard are visible.
The moat surrounding the castle is now the wading ground of ducks and swans, and is not used for defensive purposes.
A unique feature of this already singular castle is its fortified port, used both for access to the castle and for deploying ships into battle.
Medieval Sirmione Castle is a perfect platform for viewing the landscape and surrounding city.

Places to see in ( Sirmione - Italy ) Scaliger Castle
The famous castle of Sirmione, which dates back to the Scaliger Lords of Verona, and its small port (still perfectly preserved) are an uncommon example of a fortress used as a port. The dungeon tower was erected in the thirteenth century by Mastino I della Scala. The massive fortress is totally surrounded by water and has an inner porch which houses a Roman and Medieval lapidary. From the drawbridge, a staircase leads to the walkways above the walls, providing a marvellous view of the harbour that once sheltered the Scaliger fleet.
The doors were fitted with a variety of locking systems, including a drawbridge for horses, carriages and pedestrians, a metal grate and, more recently, double hinged doors. Thanks to its strategical geographical location as a border outpost, Sirmione became a crucial defence and control garrison for the ruling nobles, retaining this function until the sixteenth century, when its role was taken up by Peschiera del Garda. Venice included Sirmione in its Republic in 1405, immediately adopting provisions to render the fortress even more secure, fortifying its outer walls and widening the harbour.
The Scaliger Fortress in Sirmione is located at the end of a long strip of land that juts out into the hinterland of Lake Garda. Here, for the length of a drawbridge, a stretch of water separates the mainland from an island defended by the Scaliger Castle. The castle and its dock, still in perfect condition, are rare examples of a fortification used to defend a dock. Upon entering the fortress, you will find yourself in the main rectangular courtyard, surrounded by high walls and corner towers. The watchtower stands to the left of the courtyard.
The castle reached the height of its splendour towards the end of the 14th century. Although it was an extremely important fortress, it was never used as the seat of the court. In addition to the entrance to the underground rooms, you can still see the remains of the walls of the Monastery of San Salvatore from the Lombard period .
A large arched doorway leads to a first lunette and a first drawbridge, both of which are connected by a corridor that leads to the second drawbridge. On both side of the corridor you will find the entrances of the courtyard of the dock and the second courtyard, where a staircase of 146 steps leads to a long rampart, up to a guard station. Further ahead you will reach the inside of the Corner Tower that leads to the trenches, with characteristic Ghibelline dovetail battlements.

Замок Скалигеро - крепость со времен Скалигера, точка доступа к историческому центру Сирмионе. Это один из самых полных и хорошо сохранившихся замков Италии
The fortified Medieval centre is defended by the Scaligera Fortress, strategically positioned on the only point of access by land. There are other similar fortresses from the same period along the Veronese side of the lake. Sirmione's castle is one of the most complete and best preserved in Italy.
The Sirmione castle has large crenellated walls and towers and an inner porch which is set in medieval and Roman stones.

Sirmione Italy Castle I Lake Garda
Sirmione Italy is one of the most popular holiday resorts on the shores of Lake Garda in northern Italy. The small historic town is located on the tip of a long peninsula protruding from the southern shore of the lake between Desenzano del Garda and Peschiera. Sirmione has thermal springs and was a spa destination even in Roman times - you can visit some impressive Roman ruins at the end of the promontory. The town is in the province of Brescia, in the Lombardy region of Italy.
Sirmione is a pleasant place to stay, with lots of comfortable hotels, some in the town centre and others spread along the green pensinsula. They're designed for relaxing stays, with sun terraces, pools or private beaches. The town itself offers short strolls, a couple of tourist attractions and lake views.
Although Sirmione is very attractive, its small historical heart gets choked with tourists. For atmosphere, you're really better off visiting out of season. Almost all the businesses in Sirmione are aimed at tourists - naughty postcards, souvenirs, ice creams - and unfortunately most of the restaurants are also tourist standard. We found a very nice spot with reasonable prices however, where we were able to sit outdoors and enjoy a good meal: the Caffè Margherita.
