My morning scuba dive in the Avalon / Casino point dive park; Catalina Island January 29, 2016
It was a lovely day for a dive, so I got up early and headed down to the dive park and got in the water about 8:00 am and this is some of what I saw.

Garibaldi, Sheephead and other kelp forest residents -- Scuba diving at Catalina Island
Some residents of the kelp forest at Casino Point Dive Park, Avalon, Catalina Island.
The video was shot on a dive during the last week of December, 2016. Water temperature was about 60 degrees. Unfortunately, the visibility was not so good -- about 25 to 30 feet. The bottom was pretty stirred up and a mild current made the visibility worse.

Garibaldi Attacks ! Southern California - Warning!
Swimming with these Garibaldi for years had no idea the power and the strike that was in them over peas... Peas are great food Love them, Don't know if full on Bezerk is the way to go to get some! my mind said for footage I'll feed some! did not know getting swarmed on by a ton of orange fish would be the outcome, Insane! So don't feed the fish! especially Peas! Now the big fish had teeth, he gave me a sea pass! thank you big fish! Don't swim alone with peas in your pocket, Geez!
The Garibaldi or Garibaldi damselfish (Hypsypops rubicundus) is a species of bright orange fish in the damselfish family. Garibaldis occur in the subtropical northeastern part of the Pacific Ocean. The common name is a reference to the Italian military and political figure Giuseppe Garibaldi, whose followers often wore a characteristic scarlet or red shirt. As is the case in all damselfish, male Garibaldis aggressively defend the nest site after the female lays eggs.
Adult fish in this species are orange in color. They are the largest member of the damselfish family and can grow up to 38 cm (15 in) in length. Juveniles are more reddish, and have many small iridescent blue spots, which they lose as they become adult. Adult Garibaldis also have a more opaque tail and dorsal fin.
Garibaldis feed mainly on invertebrates,[2] which they remove from the rocks. Like most damselfish, adult Garibaldis maintain a home territory.[2] The male clears a sheltered nest site within his territory; the female then deposits eggs within the nest. The male guards the nest area until the eggs hatch, which takes 19–21 days. During the time period that the eggs are developing, the male Garibaldi aggressively tries to keep all other fish away from the (very edible) eggs, and will boldly attack much larger swimming creatures, including humans, to the point of biting divers in order to try to drive them away from the area where the eggs are deposited.

Catalina Casino Point Dive Park || Aloha Dive || 4K GoPro 60fps
Casino Point Dive Park in Catalina Avalon, CA
One of the famous dive site here in California established around 1962. A home for the state marine fish, the Garbaldi and other fishes like the Senorita, Sheephead, Opaleye, Blacksmith and the famous giant Black See Bass. This dive location is also the home for the fastest growing plant in the word, Giant Kelp.
The next time I will dive here I would like to explore the two historic shipwrecks.
I had the amazing experience diving with Aloha Dive.
Shout out to Deb and Chris for the amazing adventure along with the rest of the Aloha Dive Crew!!!
I was able to achieve my Advance Open Water Certificate! woooohoooo.
On top of that, we were able to witness not one but two gigantic black sea bass.

Free Diving with the Garibaldi
The Garibaldi is a brightly colored damselfish that makes its home in the Pacific ocean. The juveniles are spotted with blue and the adults are a solid striking orange. The Garibaldi got its name from the Italian general and politician, Giuseppe Garibaldi, who famously wore scarlet. This fish is a protected species along coastal California, and is California's official marine state fish. Unlike other fish, the Garibaldi doesn't shy away from the camera and is genuinely curious. Curiosity is pushed aside when it comes to protecting it eggs, however, as the adult males will vigorously protect its nesting site.

SoCal Snorkeling Fish Identification Trip
Another snorkeling trip to a favorite beach of mine. Multi-species, including one I didn't recognize. Not the best conditions but the large number of fish made up for it!

AMERICA'S MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLAND |ST. CATALINA ISLAND | AVALON | LONG BEACH TO ENSENADA MEXICO
ST. Catalina Cruise from Long beach Carlifonia to Ensenada, a port city on the Pacific coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Santa Catalina, one of California’s Channel Islands, lies southwest of Los Angeles. It's known for its wildlife, dive sites and Mt. Orizaba, its highest peak. The resort town of Two Harbors lies to the north. To the south, in the city of Avalon, palm trees and cabanas line Descanso Beach. Avalon’s circular, art deco Catalina Casino is a cultural center with a movie theater, ballroom and museum. Most of the island is controlled by the Catalina Island Conservancy, a private nonprofit organization. The mission of the Catalina Island Conservancy is to be a steward of its lands through a balance of conservation, education and recreation. The Conservancy protects the natural and cultural heritage of Santa Catalina Island, stewarding approximately 42,000 acres (170 km2) of land (88 percent of the island), 50 mi (80 km) of shoreline, an airport, and more than 200 mi (320 km) of roads. Glass bottom boats tour the reefs and shipwrecks of the area, and scuba diving and snorkeling are popular in the clear water. Lover's Cove, to the east of Avalon, and Descanso Beach, to the west of the Casino, are popular places to dive. At Casino Point is the Avalon Underwater Dive Park, which was the first non-profit underwater park in the United States. Catalina has also been an active port of many cruise lines since the 1990s, with Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, and Carnival Cruise Lines making the port a regular for Baja cruises.
