A Walk Around Gare La Défense, Paris
La Défense is a station of the Transilien (Réseau Saint-Lazare) suburban rail lines, RER, Paris Métro and tram. It is located underneath the Grande Arche building in La Défense, the business district just west of Paris. The station serves as the western terminus of Paris Métro Line 1 and connects the RER Line A to the Metro Line 1 station La Défense–Grande Arche since 1992, the T2 tramway since 1994 and SNCF (Transilien) train station. It is also attached to a major shopping centre. There are 25.62 million entries and exits each year.
Highlights on the surface nearby include the monumental Grande Arche, skyscrapers that host the headquarters of important French and foreign companies, and works of urban art such as Le Pouce by César Baldaccini. From the central esplanade the Arc de Triomphe can be seen further down the Axe historique.
Until May 2004, this part of La Défense hosted an information centre of the European Union managed by the European Parliament.
Like the district it serves, the station takes its name from the 19th century statue La Défense de Paris, commemorating the Franco-Prussian War.

French sculptor's ‘Thumb’ erected in Paris
A giant Thumb... in central Paris. The colossal digit by late French artist César was unveiled outside the Pompidou Centre on Tuesday, by his longtime companion Stéphanie Busuttil.

STRANGEST Statues Around the World
People have been building statues for a very long time. It’s believed the oldest statue could be around 30,000-years old, which is the Löwenmensch figurine from the Swabian Alps in Germany. Today we’re going to do some travelling and have a look at some of the strangest statues from across the globe.

9 - Floralis Genérica…
Buenos Aires is where you need to go to take in this gigantic steel-and-aluminum flower. At 8am sharp daily, this flower blooms in the United Nations Plaza. It’s the creation of Argentinean architect Eduardo Catalano and it opens and closes like a real flower would. It takes 20 minutes for the flower to open fully and the petals stretch across 105-feet while reflecting the water below it. After the flower closes at night time, it glows a beautiful red.
8 - Maman…
Arachnophobes should avoid heading to the National Gallery in Canada, because there’s a giant spider standing between you and the front door. The spider cost the gallery $3.2 million, making it the most expensive gallery purchase to date. The spider has 26 white marble eggs in it’s stomach and weighs 6 tons. This was the last of 6 spiders made by Franco-American artist Louise Bourgeois. Penny Cousineau-Levine, art professor and chair of the University of Ottawa's visual arts department believes they are extremely lucky to have this piece of work, and the investment was worth every cent.
7 - Peter the Great Statue…
Moscow is home to a rather controversial piece of work called Peter the Great and strangely also goes by another name, “300 Years of the Russian Fleet.” Construction for this monster of a statue began in 1996 and is one of the tallest statues in the world. So, why the controversy? Sculptor Zurab Tsereteli’s original intention for the statue was to depict Christopher Columbus, however, the Americas and Spain wanted nothing to do with it, so Columbus’s head was chopped off and replaced by Peter’s, hence the statue has also been called Peter the Terrible.
6 - The Giant Eyeball…
What was intended as a temporary display in Chicago, seems to have cropped up several times over the years and enjoyed a bit of fame each time. Created by Tony Tasset in 2007, this 30-foot eyeball was modeled after his own blue eyes. The statue is made from fiberglass and Tasset has said there is no deep symbolism behind the work, he just wanted to create something awesome and raise a few… eyebrows!
5 - The Thumb…
Back to Paris to pay a visit to Le Pouce or The Thumb, a statue located in La Défense, Paris’ largest business sector. It’s over 40-feet tall and weighs 18 tons! It was built by sculptor César Baldaccini in 1965 and César’s trademark was placing emphasis on regular, everyday objects.
4 - Les Voyageurs…
Bruno Catalano is a French sculptor who was born in Morocco in 1960. He has created a series of breath-taking statues that show human workers with parts of their bodies missing. They went on display in Marseilles in 2013 in celebration of their position as the European Capital of Culture. The missing pieces are open to interpretation. Are these people missing something in their lives? Have they left something behind? Are they heading towards something that will fill the gap? Many of the statues make you wonder how they’re even standing! 10 of these were presented at the port of Marseilles.
3 - Mazinger Z…
Spain is our next stop and in the suburb of Catalonia you’ll find the giant Mazinger Z, based on the Japanese super robot manga series which was released in 1972. This particular part of the suburb is Mas Del Plata, and it was never completed due to lack of funding. However, the 40-foot robot has remained in place and forever guards the entrance. Manga and anime fans should definitely pay this beast a visit!
2 - Pigduck…
Is it a duck? Is it a pig? No, it’s pigduck and this bizarre statue is in Turku, Finland! Called Posankka, this was created by Alvar Gullichsen in 1999 and made its debut by floating down the Aurajoki river. The artist says it’s meant as a criticism of gene-splicing technology, and as can be expected, many people really don’t appreciate the unusual looking statue

César, l'homme qui changeait le fer en or
Beaubourg rend enfin hommage au plus populaire sculpteur français contemporain. Le Tout-Paris se l’arrachait mais lui rêvait d’être reconnu par le milieu de l’art qui le snobait.
