Kirk Lombard: The Sea Forager's Guide to the Northern California Coast | Talks at Google
In “The Sea Forager’s Guide to the Northern California Coast” Kirk Lombard combines a startling depth of knowledge with wry humor and colorful storytelling to guide readers’ quests to hook fish, dig clams, and pick seaweed for themselves. Leighton Kelly’s stunning, occasionally idiosyncratic illustrations complement practical instructions for gathering a variety of fish and seafood and delicious recipes for what to do with each catch. Lombard, a former staff member at the state Department of Fish and Game and founder of the foraging tour company/seafood delivery service Sea Forager Seafood, insists that his readers follow all regulations and encourages sustainable practices above and beyond what the State of California requires. This quirky and useful how-to is sure to inspire an empowering epicurean adventure.

KQED's Taste This visits Kirk Lombard, Bay Area Sea Forager to learn about the fickle but rewarding art of night smelt fishing. Then he invites us back to his home where his Fishwife, Camilla Lombard, fries up the catch to show us his favorite way to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Some strange and wonderful fishes of San Francisco: Kirk Lombard at TEDxConstitutionDrive
My name is Kirk Lombard and I am many things: writer, teacher, fishmonger, fisherman, actor, musician, San Francisco history buff, walking baseball encyclopedia, smoker of fine cigars, and raconteur. In addition to all these, I am deeply passionate about our California marine resources. As the Sea Forager, I started a sustainable seafood delivery service and I lead coastal fishing and foraging tours. My fishing antics have been featured in the New York Times, CNN Travel, Food Network, Travel Channel and more. As the fisheries observer for the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission for 7 years I counted rockfish off the Farallones; checked herring, jacksmelt, stripers, and pile perch on the piers; saw how surf and night smelt were captured on the beaches; checked in on goose barnacle poachers in hidden coves; and watched homeless, drop-line-wielding grandmothers pull rockfish after rockfish out of storm drains in downtown San Francisco. You want to get deep with this stuff? Talk to me.

As defined an apex predator, also known as an alpha predator or top predator, is a predator residing at the top of a food chain upon which no other creatures prey. I’d like to eatlikeanapex. Nom #streetfoodvlogs #foodvlogs #halfmoonbay
Do not try this without proper equipment ( Half Moon Bay Boat Tour Series Part 2 ) As titled please do not try this without proper equipment. Disclaimer, I am not a Sea Urchin chef, handler or diver. With that said, Please use gloves in the handling of this creature if you ever encounter it. We end our Half moon bay boat tour series with the Rockfish and Sea Urchin we purchased. In this video you’ll see me extract Uni from the Sea Urchin. By all means this is not a how to open sea urchin video as my attempts to open it, in my opinion, was messy. The first time experience was definitely an interesting one and maybe next time it will be much better and cleaner. I hope you enjoy the video. I’m back in the San Francisco Bay at low tide! Let’s see what we can find. Note: this isn’t actually coastal foraging because I’m not eating anything I find since the water is polluted.

Foraging for Sea Urchins (Uni) | Fish & Chill
Inspired by Outdoor Chef Life, I went with the Fish & Chill crew out to Half Moon Bay to do some foraging for Purple Sea Urchin. The edible part of an urchin is a reproductive organ, called uni in Japanese.

Clamming and Fishing Northern California
Who doesn't LOVE CLAMMING! Luke and I headed out to the clam beds to do a little foraging to stock the freezer. Before we clammed we made sure to pump ghost shrimp for our San Pablo Bay trip the next day, which was productive with 2 flounder, multiple schoolie striped bass and a sturgeon lost at the boat. Was a great weekend! Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE and HIT THAT BELL to get notified on all our uploads.

Sea Urchins at Fort Ross, CA
I took a trip up to Fort Ross with a few friends for the weekend. When I went to the shore during low tide, I noticed that there were a lot of purple and red sea urchins. So, I decided to try tasting Uni.
