Green Sea Turtle 'Figment' Released and Heads Home
Figment, a juvenile green sea turtle, was released at Spessard Holland South Beach Park, Melbourne Beach, Florida on Monday, July 2, 2018.
She was stranded on March 10, 2018 at Paradise Park in Melbourne FL and was admitted to the Sea Turtle Healing Center for dehydration and malnutrtion.
Brevard Zoo, in partnership with the Sea Turtle Preservation Society (STPS), opened its 2,400-square-foot Sea Turtle Healing Center in April 2014. The facility includes two separate holding facilities with a total of 12 tanks ranging in size from six to 20 feet. The facility is not currently open to the public.
Because the beaches of Brevard County are among the world’s most important nesting areas for sea turtles and the largest in the United States, a significant number of animals are found with injuries and illnesses each year. Prior to the opening of the Center, the challenge the STPS faced was the great distance between our local beaches and existing sea turtle rehabilitation facilities, with one as far as 107 miles away. An in-county facility means a shorter drive for patients, resulting in less stress and quicker treatment for distressed turtles.

Support Sea Turtle Conservation in Florida with the Sea Turtle License Plate!
Why does it matter which license plate you buy? In Florida, revenue generated by the sale of the Sea Turtle License Plate funds critical sea turtle conservation work. 70% of the plate’s proceeds serve as the primary source of funding for FWC's Marine Turtle Protection Program. The remaining funds are routed through the Sea Turtle Conservancy, who distributes funding annually to the Sea Turtle Grants Program (STGP). The grants program disperses about $300,000 in grants every year to coastal counties, educational institutions and nonprofit groups. The STGP has awarded over $4 million in grants to more than 230 sea turtle research, conservation and education projects, all thanks to license plate sales! Florida Keys Webcam Captures Sea Turtle Hatch
Using infrared lighting, a live-streaming, high-definition turtle webcam positioned on a beach in the Florida Keys recorded the hatch of about 100 baby loggerhead sea turtles on Friday, July 25, just before 9 p.m.
Friday evening, the 3-inch-long babies erupted from a hole, came out en masse and headed to the Atlantic Ocean under dim moonlight.
The camera uses infrared lighting so hatchlings won't be confused by artificial light and will go to sea — guided by moonlight reflecting on the water -- instead of pushing further onto land.
The webcam has been focused on the nest in the Lower Keys for almost two weeks, and is part of ongoing efforts in the Florida Keys to raise awareness of sea turtles and the need to protect them.
Loggerhead, green, leatherback, hawksbill and Kemp's ridley sea turtles nest on beaches in the Keys and other parts of Florida, and inhabit Florida and Keys waters. All five species are considered either threatened or endangered, and are protected by the Federal Endangered Species Act of 1973.
The webcam was approved by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.

A1A Flooding Along Fort Lauderdale Beach 2012
October 28, 2012. The ocean has washed an entire section of Fort Lauderdale beach onto State Road A1A. For updated photos of this event, visit
For those of you unfamiliar with the area, the signs indicate where parking spaces used to be. There was a low retaining wall to keep the wind from blowing sand into the road, a sidewalk, a bicycle lane, and four lanes of traffic. This has all been buried by the sand from beach. The ocean now occupies the place where the beach used to be.
Apparently this is happening due to a combination of Hurricane Sandy passing nearby, unusually high tides, and a full moon. Bulldozers were here earlier, piling up the sand in an effort to clear a portion of the road and prevent further flooding. The damage to the beach appears to be limited to this residential area, north of Sunrise Blvd. Tourists can still enjoy a nice wide beach, south of Sunrise Blvd.
