Russia: Putin awards young researchers on Day of Russian Science
Russian President Vladimir Putin presented two young scientists and two groups of researchers with major awards at a ceremony in Moscow, Wednesday.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): First of all, I heartily congratulate all those involved in science on their holiday, the Day of Russian Science.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): Today, Russia and the whole world face massive challenges from technological development, environmental, biological, and food safety. The nature and complexity of these challenges are such that they can only be solved with the help of strong science and modern technology.
SOT, Stanislav Poslavsky, Research Fellow, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Kurchatov Institute (Russian): We are particularly pleased that the prize this year is awarded for basic research, for research in the field of high energy physics. It is well known that research in the most complex areas of science has always determined and will always determine the shape and course of the development of human civilization.
SOT, Anna Kudryavtseva, Senior Researcher Biological Science, Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology (Russian): For the researcher, especially a young one, it is a huge honour to be in this room and receive such a significant award from your hands.

Russia's Putin vows Sochi Winter Olympics will be kept secure
Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged that visitors to Sochi for the Winter Olympics, due to start in less than three weeks, will be kept safe.
A transcript of his interview with half a dozen national and international broadcasters was posted on the Kremlin website Sunday.
We will try to make certain that the security measures are not intrusive or too conspicuous, so they are not too noticeable for the athletes, the Olympics' guests or journalists, Putin said.
But at the same time, we will do our utmost to ensure that they are effective.
Russia has plenty of experience in keeping international events secure, Putin said, pointing to the G8 and G20 summits as examples.
Security is to be ensured by some 40,000 law enforcement and special services officers, he said. Of course, we will draw on the experience acquired during similar events held in other regions of the world and in other countries. It means that we will protect our air and sea space, as well as the mountain cluster.
Confidence was shaken by twin bomb attacks in Volgograd at the end of last year which claimed the lives of more than 30 people. Volgograd is a major transit hub for travel to Sochi.
There has also been violence in recent days in the southern republic of Dagestan -- the latest unrest linked to a long-running Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus region.
Putin acknowledged that the games, like any high-profile event, would be a target for terrorists.
But, he said, Russia has a perfect understanding of the threat and how to stop it.

Researchers discovered that bonnethead sharks feed on seagrass along with their traditional carnivorous diets of crustaceans and small fish. It's a mystery why the bonnetheads eat plants but the answers may lie in their digestive system. If they’re getting enough nutritional value from the grass, they might actually be omnivores.

Giant Deep-Sea Octopus Devours Jellyfish—And Keeps the Stingers | National Geographic
Scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) discovered a rare sight in the deep ocean - a giant octopus eating a jellyfish and possibly using the stingers as a tool. The species, Haliphron atlanticus, is rarely seen alive and most of its life is a mystery to researchers. Females can be up to 13 feet in length and 165 pounds, while the males only grow to about 12 inches. Researchers think the octopus might use the jellyfish's poisonous stingers as a tool for defense or to capture other prey.

President Putin hosts Serbia PM at his official country residence, discuss South Stream pipeline
Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic to his official summer residence on Tuesday where they were to discuss the planned South Stream pipeline.
The pipeline would allow Russia to send gas to southern Europe via a route under the Black Sea - bypassing Ukraine as a transit country and consolidating Russia's energy grip in that part of Europe.
Last month, Bulgaria, an EU member, suspended work on the pipeline after the EU executive commission said Bulgaria hadn't respected internal market rules covering the award of public contracts.
On Monday, Bulgaria and Russia voiced hope that work could be resumed.

Sleepy Obama/Putin Wrestles a Shark

Putin chases gray whale, shoots darts from crossbow for research
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has taken part in a wildlife experiment, helping biologists get skin samples from an endangered gray whale. Putin, who is currently visiting the Far Eastern region of Kamchatka, joined the team of marine biologists at the Kronotsky Nature Preserve, where the nearly-extinct mammals have recently been observed. Despite the poor weather conditions and the rough water, a motor boat carrying the wetsuit-clad team went to sea in search of gray whales. After a group of whales was detected, the Prime Minister shot a sample-taking dart at one of the animals with a crossbow. We tried to work with three or four whales, but we only got one, Putin told the press after setting foot on the shore. I had a rush: three times I missed, but the fourth time I hit it.
Putin's Real Height & a look into his psyche
Putin's Real Height & a look into his psyche.
When you Google for the height of Vladimir Putin, you will find that it says Vladimir Putin is 5'7. But this information is very suspect because there are many rumors that Putin wears elevator shoes to increase his height. Is there a way to prove that the rumors are true that Putin is actually 5'4 ? Yes. When we Google for the height of Medvedev we see that Medvedev is 5'4 tall.
There are numerous pictures of Putin and Medvedev standing next to each other and walking side-by-side. It is very obvious from all these candid pictures that Putin and Medvedev are approximately the same height at 5'4. This in itself presents no problem because Putin is a very powerful and accomplished man by any measure or standard. The problem lies is Putin's fear of appearing smaller and thus possibly weaker, so this attitude in Putin's psyche spills over into his foreign policy.

Transatlantic Tunnel: Underwater Tunnel - Classic Documentary
Transatlantic Tunnel: Underwater Tunnel - Classic Documentary
A transatlantic tunnel is a theoretical tunnel that would span the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe possibly for such purposes as mass transit. Some proposals envision technologically advanced trains reaching speeds of 500 to 8,000 kilometres per hour (310 to 4,970 mph). Most conceptions of the tunnel envision it between the United States and the United Kingdom ‒ or more specifically between New York City and London.
