Cultural Heritage Centre in Arusha, Tanzania
Cultural Heritage Centre in Arusha, Tanzania
The Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre is located in Arusha, Tanzania. It is a place where the past and present of the Tanzania's 120-plus tribes can be viewed in a single compound. The centre boasts of various carvings, gemstones, artifacts, clothing and books.
The Arusha Cultural heritage centre is a privately owned collection of shops and galleries that showcases arts from renowned artists around the African continent. It is one of the largest in east Africa and is located along the Arusha - Babati highway on the outskirts of the city of Arusha - Tanzania. It has several departments onsite such as:
• The antiques department, for some of the most beautiful, rarest and older art pieces
• The coffee shop, managed by an experienced french pastry chef

A history of the culture centre
The centre was founded in 1994 by mr. Saifuddin Khanbhai and has since grown to the large complex that you see today.
What to do there?
Browse through the many forms of art, including paintings, photography, carvings and many more. You most likely would need at least half a day to go through the whole lot as the place is enormous but luckily enough, there are two eateries on site where you can take a break and refuel your energy reserves. There also is the option of buying any art that catches your eye, in which case no matter how large it is, they will ship it to you.
The centre is not limited to art only, there are other items to sample such as jewellery, clothes, spices and leather products, all of which you could sample or buy. You can also watch movies at the cinema for a small fee, with the option of tribal or wildlife documentaries but these do require pre booking. Similarly you could spend some time in the day rooms as a break from wandering through the expansive compound. Entrance into the centre is free but access to some areas require extra fees.
Location of Cultural Heritage Centre
The heritage centre is located in the western outskirts of the city of Arusha - Tanzania, along the highway that is headed to Babati. This same highway takes you to Meserani snake park and several of the region's national parks such as Serengeti and Ngorongoro, making this an good place to visit while on the way there. Also, when coming from the city, there are several shopping centres and bookshops that may be worth looking into.

The Best Places to Go on a Safari in Tanzania
If you are a wildlife buff, Africa should be at the very top of your travel bucket list (along with Yellowstone). In September, I traveled to Tanzania for a 7-day safari, one the best places on the planet to get up close to Africa’s incredible wildlife.
When I first arrived in Tanzania, I had no idea what to expect. I knew we’d see some cool animals, but I figured we’d really have to search for them. When we spotted our first zebra in Tarangire National Park, I shouted to our guide “stop stop stop! There’s a zebra. Oh my gosh, let me grab my camera.” Our guide politely chuckled and slowed down while I tried to get the perfect shot of a zebra half hidden in the trees about 100 yards away.
Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to one of the densest populations of mammals in Africa. The walls of the Ngorongoro Crater riser up to 1800 feet above the crater floor, and because the crater is completely enclosed, the 27,000 animals that live in its grasslands do not migrate and can be found year round. This includes wildebeest, zebras, warthogs, hyenas, lions, buffalo, hippos, and more!
We also spotted our first lions in Ngorongoro Crater who were not in the least bit shy. You also have your best chance of seeing the highly endangered black rhino in the Ngorongoro Crater. There are only about 120 left in total in Tanzania, and 40 of them live on the Crater floor. We were lucky to spot two, but they were very far away and could only be made out with binoculars….but still….it was waaaaay cool!
With the high density of predators in Ngorongoro Crater, you also have a good chance of seeing some sort of chase. We got really lucky and caught a full kill from start to finish. (How morbid do I sound?). Anyways, we saw a hyena lurking around in the grass close to a wildebeest herd, and then all of a sudden, we saw dust fly up and a big commotion. The hyena chased the wildebeest for about a kilometer before finally taking him down. Luckily this happened right next to the road, so we were able to witness the pack of hyenas chowing down less than 10 feet away. The blood, the sounds…witnessing wild mother nature like this felt like a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
The other thing that was unique about the Ngorongoro Crater was the landscape itself. The Crater Rim, where many of the lodges are located, is a lush (often fog engulfed) rainforest, while the bottom is grasslands and savannah. Having these different ecosystems provided a nice contrasting background in the photos that you won’t get in the Serengeti.
The Serengeti
Where you go in the Serengeti depends on what you want to see and what time of year you are going to visit. June through October is the most popular time to visit the Serengeti. During this dry season, the grass is shorter making it easier to spot wildlife, roads are easier to navigate, and animals are concentrated around swamps and rivers.
In June and July, the 1.5 million wildebeest that live on the Serengeti are heading north on their annual migration and are concentrated around the Central Serengeti. If you want to see gigantic herds without having to travel too far, this is a great time. As the dry season continues, the wildebeest get further north near the border with Kenya. It’s still totally possible to see them, but you’ll spend a full day driving to get there (or you can also take a bush plane from the Serengeti airport).
When I visited in September, temperatures were super pleasant….think 80s during the day and high 60s at night. Mosquitos were at a minimum, and we still saw a TON of animals. September is also the tail end of the busy season, so crowds were pretty thin. For example, our night at the Kiota Camp (which has a 60 guest capacity), there were only 11 guests (including our group of 5). Going when there are fewer people means there are fewer cars on the road to disturb the wildlife and overall a better experience in my opinion.
We encountered several large families of elephants crossing the road right in front of our jeep, saw at least 50 lions, cheetahs, the elusive leopard, gazelles everywhere, hundreds of hippos, etc.
Our guide told us that January and February are also nice times to visit. Everything is super green, and it’s wildebeest caving season….which also means it’s a great time to catch some predator action. Rates are also lower during this time and you’ll encounter the least amount of people.
There are a ton of different lodge and camp options in the Serengeti. You can even do actual camping (not glamping) if you are on a budget. Whatever guide company you choose should be able to make several recommendations for accommodations based on your budget and your itinerary.

Ngorongoro Crater is a protected area and a World Heritage Site in Tanzania, west of Arusha
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a protected area and a World Heritage Site located 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The area is named after Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area. The conservation area is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, an arm of the Tanzanian government, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of the Arusha Region.
It has been reported in 2009 that the government authority has proposed a reduction of the population of the conservation area from 65,000 to 25,000. There are plans being considered for 14 more luxury tourist hotels, so people can access the unparalleled beauty of one of the world's most unchanged wildlife sanctuaries

A suburb of Arusha, about 10 or 15 minutes away by dala dala (the local mini bus).
Sakina is a great place. Plenty of local bars/restaurants with good food and a good welcome.
A lot of volunteers hang out here.
Famous Sakina landmarks include the Internet Cafe above the car wash, Sakina Supermarket, Milestone Park and Valance's Muzungu on Time Ride taxi car!
The brass band on the back of a pick up truck is often seen in and around Arusha. They're on the way to a celebration - a wedding for example.

Arusha is a city of approximately 400,000 people in Northeast Tanzania, East Africa. It's regarded as the gateway to the popular Northern Safari Circuit.
Arusha, also known as A Town by the locals, is situated at the foot of Mount Meru, Africa's 5th highest mountain. The altitude gives the city a pleasant climate and lush green environment.
Arusha is not a particularly attractive city in itself and is regarded by many visitors as little more than a necessary stopover before their safari starts in earnest. However, the natural charm of the Tanzanians and the buzz of a fast-growing city mean that Arusha has plenty to offer for those who are prepared to see beyond their air-conditioned safari trucks and satellite-TV equipped hotel rooms.
Arusha is home to the UNMICT, the successor to the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. It is also the site of the signing of the Arusha Declaration.

=====================
Definitely something to try, if you can afford it. There are many types of trips for many budgets; usually the pricier ones get you out farther into the Serengeti and the Ngorogongoro Crater, to places that are a little less touched by man. The less expensive excursions to reserves and parks are specialized, of a shorter duration, and worthwhile. If there's one trip that will change your perspective on life, it's an African safari.
Not all tour guides are knowledgeable on all topics. A field guide to your favourite pursuit, such as birding, which is popular with visitors, is a worthwhile idea.
Beware of paying more than market prices, you will still be offered the same accommodation as the person who is paying the regular price.

==========================
Climb Mount Meru (4,667m). It can be done in 2-4 days, depending on your physical condition. You are not required to take guides and porters up Mount Meru, but you must be escorted by armed rangers. Temperatures can be freezing, so prepare warm clothing and sleeping bags.
Tanzania Tourist Board can arrange cultural excursions to nearby villages for TZS15,000-50,000. These cultural tourism visits can be some of the most rewarding parts of a trip to East Africa, and the human (cultural) element involved complements an animal-centric safari to the game parks. Some cultural tourism programs (Ilkiding'a, Ng'iresi) are within an hour's hike of Arusha. Several others are within an hour's drive (Monduli Juu, Longido, Mulala, Tengeru, Ilkurot, Oldonyo Sambu). They are great opportunities to learn about the Maasai and Meru tribes who live nearby, pastoralism, agriculture, stories & legends, local economies. There are several good hikes around Mt. Meru, including some beautiful waterfalls. Longido has camel safaris. They are flexible in nature, meaning you can arrange an hour-long visit or a day-long one. Some sites have lodging or camping.
Keep in mind your guide may ask for donations to a charity, school or orphanage. Some dishonest guides might pocket the money, so it is advisable to give money directly to a reputable charity. The guide will give you that information.
Century Cinema has movies for TZS5,000-7,000 (USD3-5). It is part of a modern complex on Njiro Rd, which also houses modern and upmarket restaurants including popular Indian restaurant Khan's, steak outlet McMoody's and serving Ethiopian, Tanzanian, European and other cuisines is a restaurant Spice Retreat. Njiro Rd is not safe to walk on at night, so get to the complex by another form of transport rather than by foot. A taxi to/from the town centre shouldn't cost more than TZS4,000 (USD3).
Coffee walk, Nkoaranga village (30 minutes drive from Arusha town towards Moshi), ☎ +255 784 420 342/+255 784 416 317 (info@wild-tracks.com) Private tours scheduled on demand. Coffee walk arranged by local coffee company on the slopes of Mt. Meru. A guide will take you to a small family farm and a coffee roastery to show you the journey of the coffee bean. $15-45pp (depending on group size).
Serengeti highlights
Visited Tanzania's Northern Circuit national parks in May 2013. Nearly 25% of Tanzania's surface is dedicated to national parks and conservation areas. Some have world heritage status.
The world would be a better place for all living creatures if all countries were as nature-conscious as Tanzania - and if the despicable demand for, and illegal trade in, ivory, rhino horns, powdered lion bones etc. could be terminated. It is especially Far Eastern countries like China, Vietnam and Laos that nourish this market, not least because of vanity and superstitious beliefs that rhino horn is any better for virility than chewing your own finger nails.

Hungry Lions of Tanzania
Nancy and I have made three trips to Africa since 2006. Each was a photo safari for the purpose of videoing and photographing the wildlife of the African bush. In 2006, we traveled to and visited the countiries of Kenya and Tanzania, with the greatest emphasis being on the national parks of both Kenya and Tanzania, and the larggest and most important being the Serengeti, a World Heritage site, and one of the largest national parks in the world. In the same trip, we lodged at and visit the Ngorongo crater, another World Heritage site, adjacent to the Serengeti. In 2008, we chose only to visit Tanzania because of the civil unrest in Kenya in 2007. However, during this trip we first visited Selous Wildlife Refuge in the southern part of Tanzania, one of the largest wildlife refuges in the world. On both occasions, our guide was Baraza Saloho of Arusha, with whom we developed a close friendship. Both of those safaris were to East Africa. In 2011, we once again traveled to Africa, but this time it was to two countries in the southern part of the country, Botswana, home to the Okovango Delta, the only land locked delta in the world, and a nation teeming with wildlife; and Zambia, home of the magnificent Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. We traveled in open vehicles, usually a Toyota Land Cruiser in Kenya and Tanzania, and other safari vehicles in the southern nations. We have traveled all over the world, but, in our collective opinions, nothing compares with Africa for a videographer and photographer. This is just a small portion of our hundreds of hours of video. This video was shot on our last morning in the Serengeti just before we were scheduled to board a four passenger fixed wing aircraft to Arusha. Enjoy!

The Ngorongoro Crater, a World Heritage site, has the highest density of animal life in Africa. An estimated 25,000 large mammals are resident here, including 6,000 wildebeest, 16 highly endangered black rhino and around 70 lions. Serengeti National Park is Tanzanias most renowned game park. On the endless plains of the Serengeti are literally millions of hoofed animals. This abundant source of food supports large prides of lions and a variety of other big carnivores. This is the ultimate safari!
Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania
Based on fossil evidence found at the Olduvai Gorge, it is known that various hominid species have occupied the area for 3 million years. Hunter-gatherers were replaced by pastorialists a few thousand years ago. The Mbulu came to the area about 2,000 years ago, and were joined by the Datooga around the year 1700. Both groups were driven from the area by the Maasai in the 1800s. Massive fig trees in the northwest of the Lerai Forest are sacred to the Maasai and Datooga people. Some of them may have been planted on the grave of a Datago leader who died in battle with the Maasai around 1840.
No Europeans are known to have set foot in the crater until 1892, when it was visited by Dr. Oscar Baumann. Two German brothers farmed in the crater until the outbreak of World War I, after leasing the land from the administration of German East Africa. Dr. Baumann shot three rhinos while camped in the crater, and the German brothers regularly organized shooting parties to entertain their German friends. They also attempted to drive the wildebeest herds out of the crater.
The Ngorongoro area originally was part of the Serengeti National Park when it was created by the British in 1951. Maasai continued to live in the newly created park until 1959, when repeated conflicts with park authorities over land use led the British to evict them to the newly declared Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority is the governing body regulating use and access to the NCA. The area became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
Land in the conservation area is multi-use: it is unique in Tanzania as the only conservation area providing protection status for wildlife whilst allowing human habitation. Land use is controlled to prevent negative effects on the wildlife population. For example, cultivation is prohibited at all but subsistence levels.
The area is part of the Serengeti ecosystem, and to the north-west, it adjoins the Serengeti National Park and is contiguous with the southern Serengeti plains, these plains also extend to the north into unprotected Loliondo division and are kept open to wildlife through trans-human pastoralism practiced by Maasai. The south and west of the area are volcanic highlands, including the famous Ngorongoro Crater and the lesser known Empakai. The southern and eastern boundaries are approximately defined by the rim of the Great Rift Valley wall, which also prevents animal migration in these directions.
The annual ungulate migration passes through the NCA, with wildebeest and zebra moving south into the area in December and moving north in June. This movement changes seasonally with the rains, but the migration will traverse almost the entire plains in search of food. The NCA has a healthy resident population of most species of wildlife, in particular the Ndutu Lake area to the west has strong cheetah and lion populations.
