A days outing for us guys, with a boatride to the Eakachai Houseboat Guest House on the water. Great food, fantastic scenery, and a peaceful, relaxing way to spend a few hours, at a guest house put together from several floating rafts and houseboats.
Mae Ngad Dam
This is the serenity of Mae Ngad Dam that is situated in the Sri Lanna National Park, it is a little larger than most of the reservoirs around the north and the most appealing. Whether it's peace and serenity or booze and debauchery you're looking for, a weekend at Mae Ngad is a great getaway. The houses can accommodate small groups and up to about thirty people.
To get to Sri Lanna National Park use the road number 107 Chiang Mai-Fang and travel to Mae Taeng and follow the signs for Sri Lanna National Park on km.41.
Restaurant available on floating house cost 20 Baht/dish. Room rate 100 Baht/Night. 250 Baht(day time), 350 Baht(night time) (1 boat/8 persons)

A visit to Mae Ngat Reservoir about one hour north of Chiang Mai. We took a long tail boat out to a floating restaurant with bungalows, as you can stay overnight in several places. After some cold Leo beer, relaxing, a very enjoyable lunch, we returned and rode back to home. A great experience and place to leave the city behind, and enjoy some scenic beauty! Thanks to Buddy Guy for some hometown blues with The Dream.

Wat Jet Yod (วัดเจ็ดยอด. Sometimes called Wat Chet Yot), Superhighway (about 1 km north of the Huay Kaew Rd/superhighway intersection). The history and unusual architecture scattered under the yawning canopy of ancient trees is an pleasant antidote to the flash and bustle encountered at popular temples. Established in 1455 to host the eighth World Buddhist Council, many features of the grounds imitate significant places of the Buddha's enlightenment. Originally called Botharam Maha Vihata in honour of the venerated Bodhi tree, it came to be known as Wat Jet Yod by locals, after the seven spires (Jet Yod) protruding from the roof of the Vihara. The square-sided design of the Virhra is a replica of Mahabodhi temple in Bodhgaya, India, though the translation has distorted proportions somewhat. Remnants of the graceful stucco relief murals that adorned the walls depict angels with a distinctly Indian flavour. The grounds also hold some more recently built, but abandoned looking, eroded chedis and buckling bases of vanished halls, overshadowed by a fully intact, though more diminutive, replica of 'Chedi Luang that was built around 1487 to house the ashes of King Tilokarat.

Nestled within the beautiful Sri Lanna National Park you will find the sizable Mae Ngat Somboon Chon Reservior; a fantastic spot for some peaceful kayaking surrounded by lush jungle and mountainous terrain.
Recently we led an awesome group of kids as part of their summer camp in Chiang Mai. Kayaking is a great experience and good opportunity for kids to learn about water safety, practice team work and develop a new skill. This video gives a little bit of insight into the awesome time we have when we go kayaking on Mae Ngat in Sri Lanna National Park.

Well it is nice to be back on the road again! While traveling around I want give you a peek at some fun things to do if you are living as a happy RIPper (Retiree In Paradise) in Thailand. So let me show you a cool and fun thing to do if you are living in the north of Thailand.
If you are looking to get away from the congestion of Chiang Mai, about an hour away from town you can find yourself in a peaceful surrounding on a houseboat in the middle of a picturesque lake surrounded by cool water and misty forests. A perfect way to spend a long weekend, or even just a day is to go to Mae Ngat Dam & Reservoir.
You will have to pay to enter the Sri Lanna National Park, where the Mae Ngat Dam and Reservoir is located. It seems like sometimes you get in to the park for free because there is no one collecting money. The fee isn’t much though so don’t sweat it. However, there is the two-tier pricing is in place as with all National Parks, and as a Farang you might have to pay a bit more. It's an unfortunate fact about Thailand, but it won’t break you.
Once you arrive, you will need to take a long-tail boat to the actual houseboats, which are nestled further away from the parking area. It appears it costs 500 Baht, for the boat ride out to the houseboats. Although by phone we were told it would only be 100 Baht.
This large stretch of fresh water was formed a while back when a dam was built across the Mae Ngat river and flooded the valley forming the reservoir. The Mae Ngat Reservoir lies between the Mae Ngat and Mae Taeng forests creating an incredibly quiet spot to relax, swim or to fish. The reservoir has good fishing. Catches include, giant catfish, Jungle Fish and Indian Carp. Kayaks are also available to rent for paddling around on the lake.
We stayed at one of the several floating houseboats that available for rent by the day or to sleep in overnight. The accommodations are very basic and electricity is only generated during the evening hours so don’t expect luxury. There are also restaurants where you can order food & drinks while there. So come along with us and enjoy the peace and tranquility of Mae Ngat Dam & Reservoir.
