WHERE IS CATANIA ITALY?
…AND THINGS TO DO IN CATANIA, ITALY
Instead of taking the train, ferry, train combo from Syracuse all the way back to Rome. I took a train from Syracuse here to Catania. Catania is the second-largest city in Sicily and located on the East coast of the island.
Since Catania has its own airport I thought I could explore the city for a day then catch a plane directly to Rome.
Yes, I’m a fan of sustainability but sometimes…I need to sustain my sanity.
So we got a little less than 24 hours to hit the bricks and figure out what to do in Catania.

???????? Italy: More than 900 rescued refugees arrive in Sicily | Al Jazeera English
More than 900 people have arrived at the Italian port of Catania in Sicily after being rescued at sea by the Italian Coast Guard.
This comes amid a growing diplomatic row between Italy and France over the new Italian government's refusal to allow a French rescue boat to dock.
France's president has called that rejection cynical and irresponsible, and the Italian government has fired back.
Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull reports from Rome.

Inside Italy: Art in the heart of Sicily
In January 1968 a catastrophic earthquake destroyed Gibellina and some of the surrounding towns in Sicily's parched Belice Valley. When reconstruction began on New Gibellina in the 1970s, the local mayor invited prominent artists to help shape the town, turning this sleepy valley into an international centre for contemporary and performing arts.

Mediterranean Shipwreck Survivors Relocate in Migrant Center in Sicilia, Italy
Survivors of a deadly shipwreck in the Mediterranean last weekend has been relocated at a migrant center in the Sicilian port city of Catania in Italy.
A total of 27 survivors of the capsizing ship are currently housed at the Mineo center in the town of Mineo southwest of Catania, after being taken to the Catania port by an Italian Coast Guard vessel at Monday night.
The Mineo center, a sprawling former residential base for United States naval personnel, is the largest center in the Sicily, and it currently hosts more than 3,200 migrants and asylum seekers, most of them sub-Saharan Africans who are spending years here waiting for political asylum.
These people don't have enough financial means and they have to stay here until their applications for asylum are granted. That often takes 12 to 13 months, said Sebastiano Maccarrone, director of the Mineo migrant center.
They are in good health. But they suffer psychologically after this traumatizing experience, said Raffaele Zappala, from a medical rescue team in Catania.
The Italian authorities have arrested the captain and a crew member as the Coast Guard vessel arrived at the port. The two men are believed to be traffickers on the migrant boat that capsized off Libya on Sunday.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said only 28 were known to have survived and more than 800 others were believed to have drowned, making it the deadliest such disaster in the Mediterranean.

Silvestri Craters at Mt Etna, Catania, Sicily, Italy
Mount Etna is Europe's highest and most active volcano. Towering above the city of Catania on the island of Sicily, it has been growing for about 500,000 years and is in the midst of a series of eruptions that began in 2001. It has experienced a variety of eruption styles, including violent explosions and voluminous lava flows. More than 25% of Sicily's population lives on Etna's slopes, and it is the main source of income for the island, both from agriculture (due to its rich volcanic soil) and tourism.
The Mafia And A Nigerian Gang Are Targeting Refugees In Sicily (HBO)
They’ve fled violence, poverty, and terrorism – and made the often perilous journey across the Mediterranean from Africa and the Middle East. But for the more than 100,000 migrants who’ve arrived in Italy so far this year, the life that awaits them can be almost as dangerous as the one they left behind.
This is particularly true for economic migrants, who don’t have the same legal status as refugees, and aren’t given the same work permits or financial aid to help them survive. Barred from the legal workforce, and with few financial options, many are targeted by criminal gangs — supported by the Italian mafia — and thrust into a life of sex slavery and drug trafficking.
That’s what VICE News discovered after visiting Ballarò, a small market area, and traditional mafia stronghold near Palermo, Sicily, where the infamous Cosa Nostra mafia syndicate continues to wield power.
VICE News went to Sicily, to hear from migrants who’ve been caught in the crosshairs.

Places to see in ( Catania - Italy ) Giardino Bellini
Places to see in ( Catania - Italy ) Giardino Bellini
The Giardino Bellini is the oldest urban park of Catania. It occupies 70.942 m². Before the construction of a public garden, the area was occupied by a botanical maze owned by the Ignazio Paternò Castello, prince of Biscari.
In 1854, the Comune di Catania bought the area of the maze, and in 1864 started to adapt the area into a public garden. The Giardino Bellini was finally inaugurated in 1883.
Starting from 1875, the municipality acquired several further areas surrounding the maze, and two years later the work to unify these areas was undertaken.
