RAGUSA ILBA, SICILY - South East Sicily Road Trip (DAY 1)
We collected our rental car from Catania airport and drove an hour and 45 minutes to a little town on a hill called Ragusa Ilba. It soon became one of our favourite little towns we have ever visited in Italy. Ragusa is full of beautiful baroque buildings and friendly Sicilians. We ate lots of delicious food in Ragusa, including swordfish ravioli & the best cheese and meat board we have ever tasted!

Noto and Ragusa Sicily Italy
This video is about Noto and Ragusa. Take a walk through Noto and Ragusa. Two wonderful pedestrian friendly town. Very beautiful. Many places to eat and rest your weary feet. Do Not Miss Them.This was taken in 2012. We stayed at a small hotel in Noto Lido, directly on the beach.
Welcome to the CHEESE CAPITOL OF SICILY! Ragusa, Italy // 152
Today, I left Siracuse, Sicily and Ortygia Island. I'm sad to leave, but happy to go to the cheese capitol of Sicily! Ragusa is the town best known for producing the Ragusano cheese. It is built across two small mountains, making every walk a hike. It's a gorgeous old city, with the worn cobblestone steps (thousands of them) and dimly lit streets.
I took the Trenitalia train from Siracusa to Ragusa for under 9 euros. It was a comfortable and easy ride. Once in Ragusa, I walked across town to my hotel, The Sizilien. After ten minutes of knocking, waiting, knocking harder, waiting, and knocking harder, I gave up and went to get some lunch. I didn't know where else to go or what to do if I wouldn't be able to get into my hotel.
Thankfully, after filling up on the best ravioli I've ever had, I went back to the Sizilien and only had to bang on the door for a few minutes more. The receptionist came walking around the corner, seeming surprised to find me banging on the door with two huge backpacks strapped around me.
He kindly brought me to a nearby building and up to my room. It was a nice room with free water, espresso, a clean bathroom, and a nice balcony.
Tonight, I'm going to explore Ragusa at night!

WHAT
Starting from Catania, the first attraction not to be missed is Etna, taking the cable car. (Google Maps:
The Etna volcano is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and is in an almost constant state of activity.
After Etna, I suggest you reach the southern coast. If you want, you can make an intermediate stop to visit the city of Enna.
The Stair of the Turks (Google Maps: white limestone steps shaped by nature, the turquoise color of the sea and the fine sand beaches that border it…you will love it!
Valley of the Temples (Google Maps:
The Valley of the Temples is the largest archaeological site in the world! 8 temples are visible in the valley.
Along the southern coast, I suggest you visit Cava Randello natural reserve (Google Maps: and Portopalo di Capopassero (Google Maps:
On the east coast, if you can, visit Marzamemi village (Google Maps: and the baroque city of Noto (Google Maps: but don't miss absolutely the natural reserve of Plemmirio (Google Maps: and, of course, Syracuse (Google Maps:
Modica o Ragusa o Noto: The Baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Just take a walk through the historic centers to enjoy palaces, churches and cathedrals.
Parco Marino del Plemmirio: Close to Syracuse, there are a lot of beautiful small coves, but the best landscape you can admire is Parco del Plemmirio.
Syracuse and Ortigia Island:
This 2,700-year-old city played a key role in ancient times, becoming one of the greatest cities of the Western Greek migration.
In the charming Ortigia Island, visit the Cathedral of Syracuse, which was previously a Doric temple; the Castello Maniace and Arethusa fountain.
In the modern city of Syracuse visit Neapolis archaeological park.
HOW
The best way to visit Sicilyis by car, following a tour like the one showed in the video, where between each location there is no more than 2 hours. You can travel along this circle in the direction you prefer.
If you have more time, you could add some other attractions to visit:
Villa Romana del Casale, a roman villa which contains some of the best and most complex mosaics from the Roman Empire
Punta Secca, a fishing village famous to be the set of the TV series “Il commissario Montalbano”
the Baroque towns Modica and Ragusa
the city of Catania
and the tourist destination of Taormina.
WHY
The signs of history which surround Sicily.
And nature here is something remarkable.
We all know that Italian food is something special, and in the video you’ll find four deliciousness absolutely to taste:

This is day 4 of my adventure in Sicily. Ragusa was my choice of destination. I have never been anywhere like this before, I quiet little village with a population of only 73,000 people.

Ferries to Sicily:
Ragusa is a city and comune in southern Italy. It is the capital of the province of Ragusa, on the island of Sicily, with around 75,000 inhabitants. It is built on a wide limestone hill between two deep valleys, Cava San Leonardo and Cava Santa Domenica.
The economy of the surrounding province hinges mainly on light industries, agriculture (horticulture, olives), farming, tourism, light manufacturing and small oilfields. Together with seven other cities in the Val di Noto, it is listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. ( source Wikipedia )

The first part of our road trip in Sicily. After landing in Catania, we rented a car and traveled through Syracuse, Noto and Ragusa.
We got to see the amazing Cavagrande Del Cassibile, drove down Sicilian country roads and obviously stuffed our faces with pasta and cannolis ;)

It is one of the most beautiful enclosed Baroque towns in Sicily. However, many of Noto’s historic buildings have been neglected for many years and are in somewhat less than perfect condition. The Cathedrale Di San Nicolo also fell into disrepair as a result of continued neglect and this caused both its dome and part of its roof to collapse in 1996.A proud and mighty volcano rises above eastern Sicily. Mount Etna, the largest volcano in Europe, is the undisputed ruler of this fascinating Mediterranean island. The snow on the summit region of Etna obscures the fact that deep within the volcano is an unimaginable natural furnace with a temperature of around 1,000 degrees Celsius.Marsala was given its name by the Arabs who called it ‘Marsal-Allah’, ‘God’s Harbor’. The monumental city gate is a reminder of the landing of Giuseppe Garibaldis on the 8th of March, 1860.In the mountain area close to Palermo, another wonderful city featured on our journey, is the picturesque town of Monreale, a townscape that for more than 800 years, has been dominated by a single building. Monreale Cathedral was built due to a struggle for power between the Bishop of Palermo and the Norman King, William.Sicily is exquisite. An ancient island of both discovery and pleasure.
