Siege Bell, Grand Harbour - Valletta, Malta
This is the entrance to Grand Harbour, Valletta, Malta. This video was shot on a recent holiday in Malta and shows a series of locals summer chalets. These do not have planning permission but the government tolerates them. They could be destroyed at any time but it's great to have one. Here my Brother in Law sets his up with a parasol ready for a family get-together. The sea is clear and even here the scene has its own beauty. Overlooking the Great Harbour of Valletta is the Siege Bell War Memorial erected in 1992 to honour over 7000 people who lost their lives in the WW II Siege of Malta from 1940 to 1943. This is heard in the Video.

The Great Siege Bell overlooking Grand Harbour, Valletta, Malta
The ten ton bronze Great Siege Bell at Valletta was inaugurated in 1992 by Queen Elizabeth and the President of Malta, as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the Siege of Malta during 1940 - 1943. It is tolled daily at noon.
There are fine views from here across to Malta's Grand Harbour to the Three Cities of Senglea, Vittoriosa and Kalkara. The Grand Harbour has played a major part in Malta's history. It is deep, sheltered, and bordered by high stone bastions. Although now quiet and peaceful, it was the site of ferocious bombings and huge destruction in World War II by the German Luftwaffe. It was also the site of another Great Siege that also failed, that of the Ottoman Turks in 1565.

Malta got plastered quite a bit by the Germans and Italians during the Second World War, to say the least. Some say that per size, the country of Malta received more bombs per square mile than any other country during that war. Taken on Sunday 05/February/2017.
