Palermo in Venice - A. Librio - 54th International Art Exhibition - 2011
Alessandro Librio
54th International Art Exhibition
Italian Pavillion
24h sound installation
ENG
The 54th edition of the Venice Biennale opens at the break of dawn with this installation entitled Palermo in Venice. The aim of the artwork, created by Alessandro Librio, is to celebrate the union of two geographically and acoustically distant cities: sounds from the Sicilian capital city are beamed over Venice for 24 hours in real-time, provoking bewilderment and astonishment in a city accustomed to a completely different soundscape. Voices from the lively streets of Palermo, the relentless traffic noise, and sounds of engines and car horns will violently invade the city of Venice, breaking the barriers of space and time for the first time. It is the opening chapter of a trilogy in three parts: Venice first, then Palermo, lastly New York. By blending the sounds of these three cities, Librio develops an experimental analysis of the discordant fusion of contrasting urban personalities and languages.
ITA

SOUND ART | Workshop RUFA

Resonant Carboy
Resonant Carboy is a generative sound installation that offers high concentrations of microbiological life a unique mode of performative expression. In this installation, yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) are given voice as they fervently reproduce during the process of fermentation. Real-time chemical reactions become the generative process powering this unfolding temporal form. Up to 1.7 trillion yeast cells will trigger a self-organizing soundscape in real-time, as they feast on the monosaccharides available in a solution of honey and water. As the yeast cells digest the sugars, they yield large quantities of carbon dioxide. The release of this gas will drive a computer software environment an instrument that gives voice to the microscopic chorus of chemical transfiguration as a hybrid texture of amplified natural and synthetic sound.
