Meiden van de Meeuw: an audiotour in Amsterdam
Language: Dutch. Each wednesday afternoon a girlsclub meets at communitycentre De Meeuw ('the Sea-gull') in Amsterdam Noord. Nienke Rooijakkers thrust them into mini-reporters of their own lives. Dreams, contemplations and practical lifelessons follow eachother up while you are guided through the neighbourhood. Evelien van den Broek made the music and sounddesign for this audiotour. Environmental sounds, voicerecordings and music are embedded into one large soundscape. A sound documentary about a working class neighbourhood with a history - where life isn't always easy, but where the buoyancy is enormous.
Commissioned by Soundtrackcity. With financial support of Amsterdamse Fonds voor de Kunst, Mondriaan Stichting, Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds, SNS Reaalfonds and city district Amsterdam Noord.

Ticket to Istanbul, Engels
In Amsterdam, thousands of people take the ferry across the River
IJ every day. Simultaneously, citizens in Istanbul aboard one of
the many ferries across the Bosphorus to get from the Asian part
to the European part of the city. During this soundwalk you
explore the water, looking for similarities and differences between
these two cities.
Many passengers regard the IJ and the Bosphorus not in terms
of division but as connecting elements between geographicallyseparated
parts of their lives. Work and home, study and going out,
the kids’ school or shopping. For them, the crossing is a moment of
peace in their daily urban routine. A chance to stare across the water
and dream away to distant shores. Sail with them and let the special
soundtrack entice you. While listening the river IJ will gradually
transform into in the Bosphorus. When you step off the ferry you are
in Istanbul.
Turkey and the Netherlands commemorate 400 years of diplomatic
relations. This walk is part of a series of two soundwalks. In Istanbul
you can walk the other one: ‘Ticket to Amsterdam’. The soundwalks
are commissioned by Soundtrackcity (Amsterdam) in collaboration
with CUMA (Istanbul).
