Places to see in ( Chamonix - France ) Aiguille du Midi
The Aiguille du Midi is a mountain in the Mont Blanc massif within the French Alps. It is a popular tourist destination and can be directly accessed by cable car from Chamonix that takes visitors close to Mont Blanc.
The idea for a cable car to the summit, the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi, was originally proposed around 1909, but did not come into operation until 1955 when it held the title of the world's highest cable car for about two decades. It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 m to 3842 m. There are two sections: from Chamonix to Plan de l'Aiguille at 2,317 m and then directly, without any support pillar, to the upper station at 3,777 m (the building contains an elevator to the summit). The span of the second section is 2,867 m (1.781 mi) measured directly, but only 2,500 m (1.6 mi) measured horizontally. Thus it remains the second longest span width, measured directly. The cable car travels from Chamonix to the top of the Aiguille du Midi – an altitude gain of over 2,800 m – in 20 minutes, costing around €60 for an adult-ticket from Chamonix and back.
The Aiguille summit contains a panoramic viewing platform, a café and a gift shop. Even in summer, temperatures in the open viewing areas can reach -10 °C, and visitors require both warm clothing and protection from very bright sunlight. Because of the danger, tourists are unable to leave the visitor facilities on the Midi's summit. However, mountaineers and skiers are able to pass through a tunnel to reach the steep and extremely exposed ice ridge to descend to the glacier below.
In December 2013, a glass skywalk called Step into the Void opened at the top of the Aiguille du Midi peak (3842 meters high). The view is 1035 meters straight down, and one can see Mont Blanc to the south. A further tourist development currently under construction (as at 2015) is 'Le Pipe' – a tubular walkway that will completely circle the summit.
During summer months only, the Vallée Blanche Cable Car crosses peak-to-peak from Aiguille du Midi to Pointe Helbronner (3,462 m) at the Italian side of the Mont Blanc Massif. Pointe Helbronner is served by another cable car, Skyway Monte Bianco, to Entrèves, near the Italian town of Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley. This makes it possible to travel by air from Chamonix, France to Courmayeur, Italy – a route normally traversed by the highway running through the Mont Blanc Tunnel.

Places to see in ( Chamonix - France )
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (usually shortened to Chamonix) is a resort area near the junction of France, Switzerland and Italy. At the base of Mont Blanc, the highest summit in the Alps, it's renowned for its skiing. Year-round, cable cars take visitors up to several nearby peaks with panoramic views, including Aiguille du Midi above town, and Pointe Helbronner, across vast glacier fields on the Italian border.
With the sheer white heights of the Mont Blanc massif as its sensational backdrop, the Chamonix Valley shows the Alps at their most dramatic. First ‘discovered’ as a tourist destination by Brits William Windham and Richard Pococke in 1741, it has become a wintertime playground of epic proportions, more than satisfying the most demanding skiers as well as the après-ski revellers who pack themselves into its boot-stompin’ bars. In summer, lift-accessible highland trails offer thrilling panoramas to hikers, mountain bikers and other high-altitude thrill seekers.
Chamonix is connected to the valley by a highway and a small railway line. It is also connected to Courmayeur in Italy by road via the tunnel under the Mont-Blanc [18], and Martigny in Switzerland by road and rail. In the winter there are TGV lines that go directly to St. Gervais-les-Bains (Le Fayet), where you can switch to a small local train to ride up into Chamonix. There is also a TGV that leaves directly from Charles-de-Gaulle airport to Lyon, and you can transfer to St. Gervais-les-Bains (Le Fayet) from there. Via St. Gervais, sleeper trains to Paris are also easily accessible. Eurolines offers a connection to Chamonix from Italy, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, Lille, Paris and Geneva. The Chamonix valley can be considered everything between Servoz and the Swiss border, or the towns of: Servoz, Les Houches, Chamonix, Les Praz, Argentiere, and Vallorcine.
Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice), one of the biggest glaciers in continental Europe, accessible by the Montenvers rack railway. Aiguille du Midi cable car, one of the highest cable cars in the world, apart from a few in South America. In fact the Aiguille Du Midi starts at 1035 m and finishes at a staggering 3810 m! From the bottom to the top, it has the greatest vertical range in the world. Brevent cable car, on the other side of the valley, provides the best views of the Mont-Blanc massif.
In Les Houches you can take the Bellevue cable car (Telepherique de Bellevue) for another view of the Chamonix valley, with Mont Blanc to one side and the Brevent to the other. Another option is to take the Montblanc Tramway from St.Gervais Le Fayet that goes upto Nid d'aigle. Musée des cristaux, (crystals museum), a very nice museum, exhibiting an impressive collection of crystals, mostly from Chamonix.
Vallée blanche (White Valley), glacier skiing. Needs a full day from the Aiguille du Midi cable car. The easiest route can be skiied by someone who is confident on red runs, although a guide is highly recommended due to the Glacier on which you would be skiing. Your guide will have ropes, shackles and locator beacons.
The Brevent and la Flegere are the easiest ski areas to get to from the center of town. You can walk to the ski lift at le Brevent, or take a shuttle from a number of different drop of points. Skiing for all levels, but mostly mid- to extreme ski. Les Houches is the best family resort, and often has the best low-altitude conditions. It is the only ski area with slopes below the treeline, so it is a good place to go when there is a lot of fog. Le Tour is at the far end of the valley, towards Martigny. It has many easier slopes for beginners, but also some out-of-bounds skiing if you are willing to hike up with your skis. The front side of Le Tour is also a good place to go if you don't like being cold, because most slopes are in the sun (although it can still be very windy, especially on the back side down towards Vallorcine). The Grand Montets has the most extreme and highest altitude slopes, and can be accessed from the town of Argentiere.

Alpinism in Chamonix - Pointe Isabella 3.671m
During the summer of 2017, my Dad asked me to go mountain climbing with him to legendary Chamonix, the climbing mecca at the foothills of highest mountain of the Alps, Mont Blanc. It was going to be my first time alpine climbing, an adventurous sport that my father has been practising for over 40 years and wanted to share with me. I immediately accepted, having only seen the captivating mountains around Chamonix in pictures.
Our goal was to summit Pointe Isabella(3.671 m), named after Isabella Straton, who took part in its first ascent in 1875.
My adventure would start in Madrid, where I was living at the time. After failing to catch the first flight (not my fault), I had to rebook. In the end, it took me 12 hours to get to Düsseldorf, where my father lives. From there, we packed and set off in the middle of the night, driving through the darkness. After 12 hours, we arrived in Chamonix.
Once everything was ready, we headed towards the Montenvers train Station, which took us up to the stunning glacier of Mer de Glace. Heading straight through this literal sea of ice was an amazing thing to see. From there, we climbed up to the Couvercle Hut, which we reached just before sunset.
After a (very) short night, at 3 am we were heading out towards the summit. During the long and steady hike through rock and ice, I was constantly amazed by the beauty of the landscape and, at the same time, how scary everything looked.
Unfortunately, we reached an icewall that, while passable, was far too technical for the equipment we had brought and my skill level. We could have surpassed it, but the chances of belaying were slim and we had no good way of getting down afterwards. Glaciers are constantly moving and sometimes they form into difficult crevasses and seracs, like this time.
It was a little hard to turn back 300 metres below summit, but this is how it works in the mountains they show you how small you are. There, as in life, sometimes you get lucky and others you learn.
Even if we didn't reach the summit, we were super happy to have had such a cool adventure together. After all, it's all about having fun but also coming home safely. And, since we didn't summit, we have an excuse to come back. :)
