The view from the bridge over Groenburgwal has hardly changed in almost 400 years. The souring tower of Zuiderkerk (Southern Church) was painted by the French impressionist Claude Monet when he visited Amsterdam in 1874.

Muntplein ( Munt Square ) Amsterdam The Netherlands July 2017
The Muntplein ( literally mint square ) is a square in the centre of Amsterdam. The square is in fact a bridge the widest bridge in Amsterdam which crosses the Singel canal at the point where it flows into the Amstel river. All bridges in Amsterdam are numbered, and the Muntplein carries the number 1.
Muntplein is named after the Munttoren ( or simply Munt ) tower which stands on this square. This tower was once part of one of the three main medieval city gates. In the 17th century, it temporarily served as a mint, hence the name. The guard house building attached to the tower is not the original medieval structure but a late 19th-century fantasy. An underpass was added to the building during a 1938–1939 renovation.
The name Muntplein dates from 1917. The square was originally known as Schapenplein ( sheep square ) and, from 1877 to 1917, as Sophiaplein ( after Queen Sophia, first wife of William III ).
The square is a bustling intersection of six streets. It forms the southern end of the Kalverstraat shopping street and the major street Rokin. The eastern end of the floating flower market ( Bloemenmarkt ) along the Singel canal is directly south of the square.
Zuiderkerkhof, Amsterdam
The Zuiderkerk (southern church) is a 17th Century Protestant church in the Nieuwmarkt area of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The church played an important part in the life of Rembrandt and was the subject of a painting by Claude Monet.
The Zuiderkerk was the city's first church built specifically for Protestant services. It was constructed between 1603 and 1611 and stands on the Zuiderkerkhof (Southern Graveyard) square near the Sint Antoniesbreestraat. The distinctive church tower, which dominates the surrounding area, was not completed until 1614 and contains a carillon of bells built by the brothers Hemony, installed in 1656.
The design of the church in Amsterdam Renaissance style is by Hendrick de Keyser, who was also buried in the church in 1621. A memorial stone was placed on top of his tomb in 1921.

Oude Kerk (Old Church) - Amsterdam (Netherlands)
The Oude Kerk (English: Old Church) is Amsterdam’s oldest building and oldest parish church, founded circa 1213 and consecrated in 1306 by the bishop of Utrecht with Saint Nicolas as its patron saint. After the Reformation in 1578 it became a Calvinist church, which it remains today. It stands in De Wallen, now Amsterdam's main red-light district. The square surrounding the church is the Oudekerksplein.

Netherlands: Amsterdam the Old Church and the New Church - De Oude en de Nieuwe Kerk
The Old Church is the oldest remaining building in Amsterdam and is located at the Oudekerk
Square in the district Amsterdam-Centrum.
At this moment a restoration takes place, which is hoped to end in 2013.
The New Church is located on the Dam Square, next to the Royal Palace. The church is built in the 14th century, when the expanding parish no longer fit in the Old Church.
Nowadays the church is also a cultural center with exhibitions, concerts and lectures.
The New Church is a burial site for Dutch naval heroes, including the Tomb of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter.
At the time of our visit it was alas not possible to take pictures in the entire churches because of the restoration in the Old Church and an exhibition in the New Church.

Amsterdam city, canal cruise, bikes, church, Holland
Amsterdam is the capital and most populous city of the Netherlands. Its status as the Dutch capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands,[5] although Amsterdam is not the seat of the Dutch government which is The Hague.[6] Amsterdam has a population of 801,200 within city limits, 1,557,905 in the urban region and 2,332,839 in the greater metropolitan area.[4][7] The city is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. It comprises much of the northern part of the Randstad, one of the larger conurbations in Europe, with a population of approximately 7 million.[8]
Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme,[9] indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age, a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading center for finance and diamonds.[10] In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded, and many new neighborhoods and suburbs were planned and built. The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam (in Dutch: 'grachtengordel'), located in the heart of Amsterdam, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2010.
As the commercial capital of the Netherlands and one of the top financial centres in Europe, Amsterdam is considered an alpha world city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) study group. The city is also the cultural capital of the Netherlands.[11] Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and 7 of the world's top 500 companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city.[12] In 2012, Amsterdam was ranked 2nd best city to live by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) [13] and 12th globally on quality of living by Mercer.[14] The city was previously ranked 3rd in innovation by 2thinknow in the Innovation Cities Index 2009.[15]
The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city center. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Anne Frank House, Amsterdam Museum, its red-light district, and its many cannabis coffee shops draw more than 3.66 million international visitors annually.

Gebouwd 1885-1887 door A.C. Bleys.

Amsterdam - beautiful bells of the Zuiderkerk clock tower
The clock towers of the churches of Amsterdam are one of the great sights of the city. The one of the Zuiderkerk is, in my opinion, the best of them all. Here we hear the bells of the illuminated clock tower announcing 9pm on 16th January 2014.
