Our final day in Rome was spent beating the crowds at Trevi Fountain and the Spanish steps, exploring Trastevere, eating a local Roman snack, and finishing off our Roman gelato tour. We LOVED Rome, but it’s time to head to Florence for the last couple days of our trip!

This walk was filmed on January 6th, 2019 at 8am and begins at the top of the Spanish Steps(00:22) and ends at the Trevi Fountain (15:48). This is the morning of the Feats of the Epiphany, an Italian national holiday which commemorates the twelfth day of Christmas when the three wise men brought gifts for baby Jesus. For Italian children, this marks the day when La Befana, an Italian witch, flies around on her broomstick bringing gifts for all the children.

Rome's Spanish Steps reopening after restoration
The Spanish Steps in Rome will reopen Thursday after a year of restoration work. It's part of a push to restore the city's historic treasures that the government cannot afford to do. On Wednesday Rome's new mayor pulled the plug on hosting the 2024 Olympics, claiming it would add to billions of dollars of debt. Seth Doane shows how jewelry and fashion houses are stepping in to restore the treasures of Rome.

The Spanish steps are one of Rome's most popular tourist sites. The steps are climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti. Spanish Steps are just one of the great example of Roman Baroque Style. The Spanish steps were built in 1723-1725 by a design of the rather little known architect Francesco de Sanctis.

Officials in the Italian capital had previously barred visitors from eating and drinking on the marble staircase, but have now expanded the rule to include sitting, which has raised objections.

The Spanish Steps are a set of steps in Rome, Italy, climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. The Scalinata is the widest staircase in Europe.
The monumental stairway of 135 steps was built with French diplomat Étienne Gueffier's bequeathed funds of 20,000 scudi, in 1723--1725, linking the Bourbon Spanish Embassy, and the Trinità dei Monti church that was under the patronage of the Bourbon kings of France, both located above — to the Holy See in Palazzo Monaldeschi located below. The stairway was designed by architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi.

Spanish Steps: THE Most Photographed Attraction in Rome!
I was surprised to learn that The Spanish Steps is the most photographed attraction in Rome. What started out as a gathering place for artists has let to the steps being a meeting place and hangout for tourists and locals alike. It is the widest staircase in Europe. At the bottom of the staircase is a famous fountain by Bernini's father and at the top is a beautiful church. From the top you have a great view of Rome.
