Varanasi (also known as Benares, Banaras and/or Kashi) in Uttar Pradesh India is known as the spiritual capital of India, but as a tourist Varanasi city itself it can be a bit intense. Nearby (about 13km from town) and well worth a visit is Sarnath, the holiest of seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism.
Lord Buddha is said to have preached his first sermon at the Dhamekh Stupa at Sarnath, making it one of the most recognisable sites of Buddhism in India and thronged with followers of Buddhism as well as tourists, but it’s still quiet in comparison to the chaos of Varanasi and international visitors to the area will enjoy the green of the gardens as well as the temples, pillars and stupas.
The archaeological museum at Sarnath is the oldest site museum of Archaeological Survey of India. The Lion Capitol of Ashoka (a sculpture of four lions standing back to back) which forms the basis of the official Emblem of India was originally placed atop the Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath, but is now housed in the Sarnath Museum.
All the temples, shrines and points of interest in Sarnath including the Dhamekh stupa, the ruins of the Mulagandha Kuti, the main shrine where Buddha is said to have sat in meditation, the Chaukhandi stupa and the golden temple at Sarnath are within walking distance of the museum.
After haggling over the cost of a Tuk Tuk to get from Varanasi to Sarnath, and exploring the temples, archaeological sites and gardens of Sarnath, I also get to taste some of my first Indian food, including paneer.

Produced in association with the Fondazione Art Museum of Rome for an exhibition a few years ago, this is a lavishly produced volume on the origins and originality of Indo-Islamic art and architecture. Its Golden Age coincided with that of the Mughal dynasty (1526-1858, although the unitary state ended in 1707) who built an empire larger than present day India by expanding towards Persia, first to Kabul, then Delhi, and later Agra. Akbar (1542-1605) also known as Akbar the Great, was the grandson of Babur, said to have descended from Genghis Khan and Timur. Akbar brought territorial unity to his kingdom and a period of economic prosperity and political and military stability and a deep-seated cultural and spiritual renewal. Yet Akbar remained illiterate, but this did not stop him from developing a taste for the arts - painting, music, literature and architecture at his court. The book comprises various categories and materials ranging from temperas and watercolours embellished with gold, oil paintings and book illustrations, to handcrafted items for everyday use, extremely rare fragments of fabrics, antique carpets, wedding counterpanes, jewellery boxes, chests finely inlaid with ivory, brass and mother of pearl, and combat and parade weapons studded with precious stones or inlaid with ivory, wood and velvet. The exhibition was complemented by the reconstruction of a mosque in Fathpur Sikri reconstructing the furnishings and original objects used at the great Emperor's court. The King places a talisman on his sleeping wife's bosom on page 225, a lady describes her problem to a Maullama on page 224 in the Religion and Myth section, gilded copper, mother of pearl and semi-precious and precious stones adorn a vessel with spout on page 143. In splendid colour and detail, Babur supervising the construction of embankments at a local stream at Istalif 1598 and the construction of Agra Fort a folio from a book, watercolour and gold on paper. The Mughal miniatures are exquisite and many are photographed in close-up detail for closer inspection and understanding. All aspects of human and animal life are depicted in what must be over 400 examples, many full page. With extensive bibliography, extremely useful Catalogue with a small black and white version of the artwork and a full description beneath from pages 234-279. 9¾ x 11, a rare find and published by Skira art publishers.

It is located in NCR Delhi near the Leisure Valley Park. It was opened by the Chief Minister of Haryana in 2010. It is an entertainment and a leisure spot where people come to enjoy an evening and de-stress themselves.
14. Dilli Haat
Dilli Haat is a venture of Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation. It is spread over an area of 6acres and is now transformed into a plaza. All the shops in this haat are not permanent. Some are just put for fifteen days. New Delhi
Delhi is divided into two main parts. Old Delhi the city of the Mughals and the capital’s most frenetic quarter. Old Delhi’s teeming bazaars have a tale to tell, its greatest monuments are undoubtedly the magnificent constructions of the Mughals, most notably the mighty Red Fort, and the Jama Masjid, India’s largest and most impressive mosque.
To the south, encompassing the modern city center is New Delhi. A spacious city of tree-lined boulevards, New Delhi is also impressive in its own way. The Rajpath, stretching from India Gate to the Presidential Palace, is at least as mighty a statement of imperial power as the Red Fort, and it’s among the broad avenues of New Delhi that you’ll find most of the city’s museums, and its prime shopping area, centered around the colonnaded facades of Connaught Place.
As the city expands, many shops, restaurants and other businesses are moving into South Delhi. Speaking of restaurants our favorite restaurant in Delhi was the Hot Chimney, we think it deserves your visit. Among the modern developments is where you’ll find some of Delhi’s most ancient and fascinating attractions. At opposite ends of Lodi Road, for example, lie the constructions that mark the two ends of the great traditional Mughal garden tombs such as Humayun’s Tomb. Here too, you’ll find the remains of the six cities that preceded Old Delhi, most notably the Qutb Minar.
Varanasi - THE SPIRITUAL CAPITAL OF NATION INDIA
Varanasi is a city that extends along the Ganges River in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Northern India, and is also known as Benares or Kashi.
The city is the ultimate pilgrimage spot for Hindus, and is not only the spiritual capital of India, but also the holiest of seven sacred cities in Hinduism, and it played a significant role in the development of Buddhism.
Activity at the ghats starts in the early hours of the morning. Devotees descend the steps to bathe in the Ganges. The river is worshipped as the holiest one in Hinduism and bathing in it is believed to rid one of all sins that one might have committed in life.
Agra - WHERE THE LOVE RESIDES IN THE AIR
Agra is a city on the banks of the Yamuna river in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
Mughal style architecture forms the attraction of the state and prime among these is the Taj Mahal. As a symbol of love for his wife Mumtaz who died in 1631 after giving birth to their 14th child, Emperor Shah Jahan in the mid 17th century built the monument.
Another place not to forgot to visit is the Agra Fort. The fort served as the residence of Mughal emperors till 1638 when Delhi became the capital.
Gwalior – The Princely Town of Central India
Known as the cultural capital of Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior is one of the oldest cities in India and the fourth largest town in the State.
Gwalior, owes its fame to the fort, floating atop a 100 meters hill, which the Mughal emperor Babur called “the pearl amongst the fortresses of Hind”. The fort covers 3 km2 and is surrounded by a strong sandstone wall.
Inside the fort, there are six palaces, three temples, and numerous water tanks. Gwalior Fort was considered the most impregnable fortress in all of North India.
Next to West Gate you will find the fabulous Jain statues and carvings. A must visit. There are more than 90 statues from sizes as small as few centimeters to 15 meters.
Lucknow
Lucknow, is the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Among the amazing monuments are Imambara, Rumi Darwaza, Kaiserbagh Heritage one, and Dilkusha.
Bara Imambara and Chhota Imambara are an interface between the Mughal architecture and the Turkish architecture.
The British Residency is also a famous attraction that must be visited. The complex consists of several buildings constructed during the rule of Nawab Saadat Ali Khan II from 1780 and 1800.

11 Pune is a sprawling city in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. It was once the base of the Peshwas (prime ministers) of the Maratha Empire, which lasted from 1674 to 1818. It's known for the grand Aga Khan Palace, built in 1892 and now a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, whose ashes are preserved in the garden. The 8th-century Pataleshwar Cave Temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.
12 Chandigarh, the capital of the northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana, was designed by the Swiss-French modernist architect, Le Corbusier. His buildings include the Capitol Complex with its High Court, Secretariat and Legislative Assembly, as well as the giant Open Hand Monument. The nearby Rock Garden is a park featuring sculptures made of stones, recycled ceramics and industrial relics.
13 Hyderabad is the capital of southern India's Telangana state. A major center for the technology industry, it's home to many upscale restaurants and shops. Its historic sites include Golconda Fort, a former diamond-trading center that was once the Qutb Shahi dynastic capital. The Charminar, a 16th-century mosque whose 4 arches support towering minarets, is an old city landmark near the long-standing Laad Bazaar.
14 Ahmedabad, in western India, is the largest city in the state of Gujarat. The Sabarmati River runs through its center. On the western bank is the Gandhi Ashram at Sabarmati, which displays the spiritual leader’s living quarters and artifacts. Across the river, the Calico Museum of Textiles, once a cloth merchant's mansion, has a significant collection of antique and modern fabrics.
15 Manali is a high-altitude Himalayan resort town in India’s northern Himachal Pradesh state. It has a reputation as a backpacking center and honeymoon destination. Set on the Beas River, it’s a gateway for skiing in the Solang Valley and trekking in Parvati Valley. It's also a jumping-off point for paragliding, rafting and mountaineering in the Pir Panjal mountains, home to 4,000m-high Rohtang Pass.
16 Rishikesh is a city in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan foothills beside the Ganges River. The river is considered holy, and the city is renowned as a center for studying yoga and meditation. Temples and ashrams (centers for spiritual studies) line the eastern bank around Swarg Ashram, a traffic-free, alcohol-free and vegetarian enclave upstream from Rishikesh town.
17 Udaipur, formerly the capital of the Mewar Kingdom, is a city in the western Indian state of Rajasthan. Founded by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1559, it’s set around a series of artificial lakes and is known for its lavish royal residences. City Palace, overlooking Lake Pichola, is a monumental complex of 11 palaces, courtyards and gardens, famed for its intricate peacock mosaics.
18 Jaisalmer is a former medieval trading center and a princely state in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, in the heart of the Thar Desert. Known as the Golden City, it's distinguished by its yellow sandstone architecture. Dominating the skyline is Jaisalmer Fort, a sprawling hilltop citadel buttressed by 99 bastions. Behind its massive walls stand the ornate Maharaja's Palace and intricately carved Jain temples.
19 Kochi (also known as Cochin) is a city in southwest India's coastal Kerala state. It has been a port since 1341, when a flood carved out its harbor and opened it to Arab, Chinese and European merchants. Sites reflecting those influences include Fort Kochi, a settlement with tiled colonial bungalows and diverse houses of worship. Cantilevered Chinese fishing nets, typical of Kochi, have been in use for centuries.
20 Varanasi is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh dating to the 11th century B.C. Regarded as the spiritual capital of India, the city draws Hindu pilgrims who bathe in the Ganges River’s sacred waters and perform funeral rites. Along the city's winding streets are some 2,000 temples, including Kashi Vishwanath, the “Golden Temple,” dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

7 Wonders of India: Sarnath
Sarnath is located 13 kilometres northeast of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Ashoka built the Sarnath pillar to commemorate the site of the first preaching of Lord Buddha, where he taught the Dharma to five monks. After attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, the Buddha went to Sarnath; and it was here that he preached his first discourse in the deer park to set in motion the 'Wheel of the Dharma'. A monastic tradition flourished for over 1,500 years on the site of the deer park at Sarnath.
